About This Whole Featured/Advertising Thing...

When I originally wrote this blog I was fairly excited for the voting system

but to be honest the more I think about it, the less I like it.

The first thing I dislike? Notice that for every vote a story

gets, that author earns to Karma points. Well what happens when

all of the top author's stories get a ton of votes

(naturally since they have more readers)

and then get a surplus of karma?

I'll tell you what happens. They then have an outrageous

amount of karma and will ALWAYS outbid everyone

for the ad placement -_- this seems less and less fair

the longer I think about it. The only good thing is that

those who got votes to be featured but didn't win will

get to keep their karma. The way I see things?

Everyone ought to vote for stories that they like by an

author that way the author will earn plenty of karma

and stand somewhat of a chance at purchasing an ad!

A sudden thought I had while replying to a comment

on this blog. I think that the advertising should not be able to

be bought by a person to promote their own story. Look

at it this way. If I'm popular and have a ton

of people to vote for my story, I'll be featured. In that

same scenario, I also have lots of karma and

will be able to also buy a spot.

If only readers can buy spots for the ads, it will be a

better incentive to comment (so they can buy an ad spot

for a good story). Let's face it, if I had an average amount

of readers they will never get my story voted into the

featured spot, they just can't compete with the number of

readers belonging to top authors. That's just my idea anyway,

I think it would be a bit more fair that way.

Side note: To all of those lovely readers whom have bid to

have someone else's story promoted you are simply angels.

I got a PM from a reader whom was really upset she couldn't

win a bid for me and it just brought me to tears. Wae you guys so

kind hearted?! Thus it prompted me to follow the trend of

karma, and bid to have a story of my favorite author in an

ad as well! Keep your fingers crossed, so far it's winning ^-^

I also don't know how to join contests..
I hope you can help

I don't like that there are karma horders. it's cool if you get them because people love your story. But there's lots of authors who live just to get karma and their stories are crappy. They can bid high for spots. I have good stories and pretty high karma but I get overbid by people in the 5-6 thousans. i think that's just ridiculous. We should be more respectful of each other and just try another day. I really wanted a spot but I don't have that much karma *shrugs*

I understand what you're saying, but I think your outcomes are a bit flawed. Some popular authors really don't care if they get featured or not. That being said, they also won't buy an ad. I don't think Dbskgirl4ever would go and outbid everyone because she knows her fics get a lot of attention already. Also, I don't think people shouldn't be allowed to vote for their own story (that was a horribly constructed sentence). If they want to bid for themselves, that's fine. How else would they get attention in this competitive world? It's only for a day. Now, if they bid for themselves every single day.... That's a different story.
The whole voting thing though... I read this blog before going to the homepage so I was confused as fck. I remember Jason saying that we would start voting and stuff soon but it seems like a semi-bad idea now. True, there's the possibility that this might turn out for the better, but also not. Lesser known authors with amazing fics will be become lesser known, because who's going to vote for something they don't know about? I'll have to wait and see about popular authors getting featured through votes, it's inevitable but how often will it occur? I wish Nichi put more info in about it. Is the feature fic ONLY going to be based on votes now? That kind of . I liked (well, not liked, but it's sounds more appetizing) that subscriber algorithm more than this voting business.

Mhmmm I agree with you one hundred percent. But I don't the AFF had taken that into consideration (or maybe they have and just pulled it to the side). But you know they're trying to get a more variety out of this whole voting thing, but with new or less well know writers this won't help much. Then later on we'll have the same authors on the featured page and that'll (to be) be meticulously tiring.

Still I don't think some of us really care about this anymore. (To me, I write for the joy of it and to the people who read my work. It's not about the fame of being well known to everyone but the accomplishment to have known you wrote a piece of work that's yours and have someone else enjoy it with you. That to me is more important than having votes)

I don't think whoever's running this website thought it through that much before implementing it. It's funny because I continuously come across making fun of AFF for featuring really poorly written stories and then the really well written stories are always hidden. Of course, there are definitely exceptions to that. I've given up on the whole karma thing really. I comment on stories I like that I've read so I can appreciate what the author has written but really besides that? Karma is just the little tally that's by my name that I really don't care about.

Ahhh, yeah I agree with you but honestly I don't really care about that advertisment I am happy as long as some people read my stories and like them :)

yeah noticed that too. wanted to advertise one and then say the points for this month, checked the once for next month and realized that t´s basically just good for people that are ranked in the top 100 authors. at first i thought that it´s for "small" authors like me but i got trolled. don´t like it too

I dislike the voting system...
And I don't have any problems with the top authors, but yeah of course this is only going to benefit them an there's still no way any other author's will get their story featured, even if they have better stories...
I don't know why Jason even changed it..
