which narrative POV do you prefer to read? please vote in this poll ❤️

hi everyone, sorry for the random blog post but I'm so curious to hear your opinions!!!

to all readers - which narrative POV do you prefer to read?

please answer in this poll if you have 2 seconds to spare AND IF YOU HAVE MORE SECONDS, please comment with your thoughts!

  • 1st person POV (written in one of the character's perspective - "I", "my", etc)
  • 2nd person POV (written in the reader's perspective - "you", "your", etc)
  • 3rd person POV limited (narrator follows ONE character - "she", "he", "they")
  • 3rd person POV omniscient (narrator is aware of all characters' feelings, etc)

personally, I guess I prefer to read first person? I really like how intimate it feels and I also really appreciate how an author can manipulate perspective; obviously there are some downsides (for example if you fully hate the narrator and cannot tolerate them for the entire length of the story LOL) but all-in-all I really enjoy developing a personal bond(?) with the narrator/main character and following along their development/thoughts/feelings. I find that in first-person you can also sometimes be distrustful about having just the one perspective, and hence it lowkey forces you to do some detective work to figure out the intentions of OTHER characters, on top of sifting through the narrator's own biases. in saying that, I also prefer third person limited > third person omniscient.

but I'll admit that for strictly fluff stories, second person is so good HAHAHA

what do you guys think?? I'd really love to hear all your thoughts omg!!!

I would I say prefer 3rd Person Limited the most because it’s the most versatile and easiest to read! It’s easier to identify the thoughts of the person you’re reading, and depending on how the author writes, it can also be very stylistic. Like 1st Person, it can also include an “unrealizable narrator” type of deal since it only focuses on the thoughts of one character.

1st Person is also nice, but as you said, it can be harder for some readers to do “detective work” if the narration is a bit unreliable or biased.

HAHAHAH AND I ACTUALLY THINK 2ND PERSON IS GOOD FOR BOTH ANGST AND FLUFF?? Angst is a lot better when it gets deeply personal, and when the reader feels like they’re being addressed as “you,” it can add extra hurt point hehe. I do agree with you too, though. It’s nice for fluff because again, if can add extra in-the-feels emotions.

I don’t think I’ve actually seen great 3rd Person Omniscient in a story before? Usually, those are done in a very specific way where there’s a body-less character that looks over a cast. In “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak, the main narrator is “Death” who isn’t a character that the characters really interacts with. He’s sort of just there to act as the story narrator, adding his own feelings on the thoughts and actions of others. It makes for a pretty good narrative style, but it’s very specific, and I don’t think every story could pull it off.

I enjoy all but prefer mostly third person limited and omniscient if it was separated (like not all of the povs mixed together? Does that make it 3rd pov limited??)

I have found myself all over the map trying to stay with the pov I started with now that I have done a couple stories. I try, I really try to keep within it but dang it is hard for me!!!!

I usually write “I” and then switch it to third person when I want them to see it from the male’s characters POV.

i’m okay with everything but 2nd person POV is kinda meh ngl 😭 but i agree with fluff written in 2nd person POV!! for romcom, 1st person POV is very fun to read in because we can read what the character is thinking inside and their judgements XD *cough* juri 🌚👊 mystery/ detective/ thriller au?? 3rd person POV is very y bc 1st - readers won’t know what exactly the character is plotting and so does the rest. the probability of every characters being the backstabber is 💯

For me I don’t have any problem with 1st 2nd or 3rd with limited narrator. The author can use I or You or even She and I would not feel much different. So I would say it depends on how author prefers — but I don’t like 3rd POV omniscient. I like the feeling of frustration and playing detective, thinking thing by myself what others characters are thinking and get back stabbed later. So knowing every character’s feeling is not my style.
