BACKGROUND

when i grow up,

lee nahyun was born as the only child in seoul, south korea. growing up, her parents loved her and always showered her with endless affection. nahyun remembers her childhood as a happy one.

 

until her parents filed for a divorce when she turned nine. their marriage was crumbling with every passing day and they eventually decided to put an end to things. her mother gained custody over her and that was it. as her mother got busier with her work, trying to make things work in the household with only one source of income now, nahyun grew to be more self-sufficient and independent. she still visited her father often, but things just weren't the same anymore.

 

when figuring out who i am,

as nahyun entered teenagehood, she always looked at her classmates hanging out with both their parents in envy. she matured faster than her peers; she struggled through middle school, struggled finding her own identity. it definitely wasn't easy but she made it to high school and entered as a stronger, tougher girl.

 

in the first two years of high school, nahyun studied hard, got into relationships, took up a few part-time jobs during her vacation breaks, suffered heartbreaks, but she grew.

 

when reality hits,

in her last year of high school, a new boy transferred into her class and that was it. kim younghoon was charismatic, sweet, and humorous, and nahyun couldn't help herself from falling in love. nahyun had never recalled feeling so much for someone before. they were head over heels for each other and couldn't help but start to plan a future together. they were going to seoul national university together, get married after graduation, have two kids a few years later and grow old together. that was the game plan.

 

that was, until one summer day that may. the couple found themselves cuddled up on nahyun's couch when nobody else was home, nervously gripping onto the pregnancy test kit while awaiting for the results to appear. nahyun's period had been two weeks late, and she had immediately gone down to the nearest pharmacy to purchase two different kits. it was faint, but they saw them crystal clear. two lines. positive.

 

when i lose you,

younghoon's initial reaction was to not keep the child, but nahyun was persistent. she decided to continue with school until her bump became noticable. she was going to study hard, take a gap year after her college entrance exams and then enter university. she had it all planned out.

 

but life never really goes our way, does it? it was mid-july and nahyun was attending night-study in school, when her stomach suddenly contracted. it was an unexplanable type of pain; something so out-of-the-body, but so real. she started bleeding profusely. nahyun was too out of it to comprehend what was happening, but younghoon had immediately dialled for an ambulance and within half an hour, nahyun found herself in a brightly-lit room, with surgeons and nurses surrounding her.

 

the terms 'undetected heartbeat', 'losing blood' and 'inevitable' were thrown around a lot. and inbetween her state of panic and pain, nahyun cried and begged the doctors to save her baby, fast before all she saw was darkness. 

 

when nahyun came to, the nurses in the room explained to her what happened. she only heard the word 'miscarriage' before she broke down into unconsollable tears. to make matters worse, younghoon was nowhere to be found.

 

when i find myself again,

the next few months were a blur. nahyun struggled to recover from the pain of a miscarriage, sudden breakup, school, everything all at once. 

 

nahyun was on the way home from night-study that day when she found a newborn baby boy in an open cardboard box on the sidewalk. she was in a hurried mess when she picked the baby up and rushed all the way home. it was clear that whoever left the baby there didn't want anything to do with the newborn anymore. that thought alone was enough to break nahyun's heart. yet she also knew that she was too young to take care of a child. hell, she could barely take care of herself. but there was something about the baby boy that drew her to him. perhaps it was because she lost her own child even before she met them, or the fact that she grew up in a single-parent family. nonetheless, over the next few days, formal papers were signed and lee jihoon was hers. 

 

when i live,

the first few months weren't easy. as much as nahyun wanted to give her baby a loving home, the stress from studying for the college entrance exams, and the repercussions of the depressive episode she was previously thrown into still lingered. nahyun has no idea how she managed to push herself through so long without creating any harm, but thinking back now, she's thankful that she survived through.

 

after her college entrance exams, nahyun's mother suggested that she visit a therapist, which she did. over time, she learnt how to better care for herself and her child. the self-loathing and negative thoughts that were once screaming in her head, were silenced. nahyun started becoming a better mother, and a better person. 

 

come 2021 and jihoon is turning four. he's a polite, handsome, sociable and chatty toddler whose eyes turn into crescents whenever he sees his mom. nahyun loves him more than anyone else in the world and would do anything to ensure that her baby boy lives the best life.
