When she speaks, she makes sure that every thought is calculated and she rarely acts on impulse. Minami knows how to calm herself down because having a calm nature makes her mind also at ease and it's a mature thing to do. She prefers to keep any extreme emotions isolated from the sight of others because she thinks it makes her look weak. For her, life is full of problems and challenges she has to carefully solve and any mistake can affect her whole self immediately.

There were others who found her frankness as savagely funny too. However, she's overcritcial to her own self the most.   ✧ Minami is born on the early morning of September 22, 2004 in Nagoya as the first child of Yokohama Koji and Fukiko. During this time, her father worked as a professional basketball player until she was 8 years old, he retired and became a basketball coach. Her mother is a nurse in the cardiology department at the local hospital in their city. She grew up in a typical strict Asian household with a lot of expectations for their child. Her mother encouraged Minami to take piano lessons while still doing excellent in academics. But what Minami really wanted to pursue before was ballet so her parents had an agreement to her that she had to take piano and ballet lessons simultaneously while maintaining high marks at school. Minami was only 6 years old but she managed to do it because she really liked ballet. To afford these lessons, the Yokohama household was in the higher ups of the society. Minami was oblivious to their status before because her parents never spoiled her and they were very frugal. They also didn't have any housekeepers because her parents wanted their children to grow independent. When her younger brother, Yokohama Jyunpei, was born when she was 8, her parents taught her to learn how to take care of him too and Minami had no choice but to obey them. She didn't hate it, though there were times she was jealous, but as time went by, she understood why he needed to be taken care of more than her.

  ✧ At the young age of 10, she auditioned at the AKB48 Group Draft Kaigi in March 2015 to pursue her dream as a performer. It took a lot of convincing for her parents to let her take the path but she promised them that she'll do well in her dream. After becoming a finalist, she was drafted to SKE48 Team S in May 2015. In a SKE48 concert in November 2015, it was announced that she was promoted as an official member of Team S. Being a middle school student and idol was one of the toughest years of her life. She felt happy and proud at first, but she started to encounter more and more difficulties. Even after she debuted as an idol, Minami didn't feel satisfied and she wanted her talents to be recognized more. When she was scouted by a YG staff in the streets, she auditioned first before deciding between two different idol careers. After more than two years of being SKE48's youngest member, she graduated from the group and transferred to YG Japan in February 2018. Her former members resented her for leaving the group after becoming a member in a short time, but Minami didn't want to miss a good opportunity. Besides, they never really even cared for her or comforted her during her tough times. Because her hometown was quite far from Tokyo, Minami rode the train every day for 1-3 hours. Not long enough, her parents let her stay with her aunt who's living Tokyo. She also transferred schools from Nagoya to Tokyo. After training for a year, the YG staff thought she'd be in a better group with the trainees in Korea and she went to Korea alone. Her parents still wanted her to finish her studies so Minami enrolled in Hanlim Multi Arts School, majoring in Practical Dance.

  ✧ Minami grew up not very affectionate to her parents because they had different love languages. Her parents show their love for their children through quality time because they want to make up for their absence because they both worked. They have a habit to go out often to parks or restaurants every weekend. Her mother was often busy at the hospital, so there were times when Minami felt closer to her father because they spent more time together, but it was more of an advice talk between them. On the other side, she learned a lot of qualities from her mom like being organized and punctual. For Minami, all she wants to receive from them is to hear that they're proud of her. When she wanted to become an idol, her mom disapproved of it badly and until now she's still advicing Minami to graduate college in hopes of getting a more stable job in the future. The truth is her mom is just worried that Minami might experience what happened to her in SKE48 again. Currently, she occassionally talks with them through calls and she also comes home at Nagoya once in three months.

  ✧ When Jyunpei was born, Minami already felt the responsibility and pressure to take care of him. She wanted to set a good example for him when he grows up. She helped her mother a lot when he was a baby and she also was responsible most of the time in teaching him and helping him with kindergarten homework. Unfortunately, Minami had to move to Tokyo and soon to Korea, so she didn't get to spend much time with him while he grows up. She feels sad about it but Jyunpei would always send her words of encouragement through video calls. He's not as strict as she is and he grew up more extroverted, but he still looks up to his sister a lot because of all she have accomplished at such a young age. When he has some little troubles in school or in the family, he doesn't directly tell it to her but sometimes Minami is kind of demanding in knowing what happened and she proceeds it with paragraphs of advice. They're not very affectionate with each other and they prefer extending each other a helping hand and encouraging words to show love.

  ✧ Minami first met them during her short-term trainings in Korea when she was still a trainee in YG Japan. At first, she felt kind of insecure because they've been training seriously for years compared to her who just started training seriously for a short time. There was also a language barrier between them so they didn't get to interact much. After Minami transferred to Korea, she adjusted herself to be more comfortable with them so she really tried to speak with them in Korean and joined them in practicing sometimes to avoid any awkward tension. Soon they become close after a few more months of practicing together and Minami still looks up to them a lot because most of them are older than her. She doesn't like being babied even though she's part of the maknae line but she also got used to the affection and love from her unnies.

 

SUGIYAMA AIKA Ex-groupmate + close friend / 19 / SKE48 Team S

  ✧ Minami and Aika became close because they both auditioned in SKE48 in March 2015 and they were also promoted as official members of Team S later in November but in different concerts because Aika auditioned as a part of the 7th generation while Minami auditioned through AKB48 Group Draft Kaigi. They were the youngest members at that time so they relate to each other a lot. Because Aika was still older than her, she took care of Minami a lot and Minami also felt that she can rely on Aika. When the other members bullied Minami, Aika protected her. They both struggled to gain recognition at first but unlike Minami, Aika enjoyed being a Japanese idol so she stayed in SKE48. Even though Minami wanted to pursue a different path and they had to be apart, Aika encouraged her in her decision to be a KPOP idol They always open up to each other and they continue to update about each other's lives through video calls after Minami went to Korea.

  ✧ Minam's role model as an idol, especially in dancing, is BLACKPINK's Lisa. She looks up to her a lot even when she was in SKE48. She really wanted to meet her after she went to YG Korea. When she passed by the BLACKPINK members in the hallway, she was starstruck at first and just bowed to them. BLACKPINK's too busy to visit the training grounds often but when they do, they would give advice to the trainees. Minami would approach Lisa shyly, starting off with a praise and a little fangirl moment, before asking some advice or thoughts from her performance. One of her dreams is to learn from Lisa and dance with her on the same stage.

[ SKE48 Team S  ✧ 2015-2018 ] A small elaboration of her experience as a Japanese idol. Minami was the happiest when she was promoted as an offcial member. She enjoyed practicing and performing different songs. Being a Japanese idol allows her to interact a lot with the fans through social media accounts, live showrooms, small theaters, and handshake events. But being exposed more also brought danger. She was so young back then and everything was a new experience so she endured some vague uncomfortable moments from the male fans taking pictures of her and comments on her accounts. However, Minami immediately took action when she learned that some of her personal information like contact numbers and school address were being sold by her creepy fans. It was rumored that her bullies gave it to the fans but she didn't get any clear answers when she questioned them. Her bullies were the same ones from her trainee days that debuted with her. They indirectly joke about her even in live showrooms like how her feet must be big or how it's hard to find clothes in her size. Some fans followed their teasing and criticized Minami for being too tall and not cute unlike the other members. She was around 165cm during these times but she was still the tallest. Aika, her friend, felt sorry for Minami, so she would block those bullies and she also went with her to the police to report their creepy fans. As one of their ways to earn money and fans, the members did gravure photoshoots and Minami felt uncomfortable doing it as a 12 years old even though she wore nothing revealing. These experiences made her reflect if this is where she wants to be for more than 5 years. She came up with a conclusion that her dream is to be performing artist who loves and enjoys being on stage.
