My Dilemma (SHAWOLS PLEASE CLICK)

Huhuhu.

So, I have a bit of a dilemma and I thought my poll would help but it was 50:50. I really do want to write stories about SHINee since they are the very first group I ever stanned and I know them the best (in terms of how to write personalities and such). The problem is, I often worry if writing about Jonghyun is seen as disrespectful/not okay. Someone told me it was wrong since he is deceased but then I thought about how it is fanfiction and keyword is: fiction.  It doesn't follow real life and I tend to write AU only. I could never just write a fic about OT4 SHINee, OT4 SHINee doesn't exist to me. It will always be 5.

I am just worried about if shawols would support my fics if I do continue to write OT5 SHINee. I know its not about the views or subs but I do want to know people will want to read OT5 SHINee fics and engage on them comfortably without feeling guilty as I have. I also wonder if writing with Jonghyun is okay or not. Idk, I've been thinking about this a lot lately and even went as far to change my drafts to EXO characters/ships but it doesn't feel the same as it would SHINee.

Let me know your opinion on this and tell me your truth and why you view it okay or not. Please share this so I can gather a collective of opinions from Shawols and non-Shawols.

Thank you, and Merry Christmas.

I prefer that Jonghyun is included if he is suppose to be a part of the story. At first it was because I didn't want people to just forget about Jong and see him as taboo. Now it's definitely as some comments below have said. Jonghyun is still a person and shouldn't be reduced to one day, he's not a trigger. I understand some people can't handle it yet, but those people will most likely just not read a fic if they're not ready if ever.

I personally prefer when Jonghyun is included. For me, he holds the same place in my heart he held before his passing. In my heart, SHINee is always five. I disagree with putting trigger warning honestly, I do understand people might feel negatively, but 1. he's a person, not a trigger 2. SHINee isn't SHINee without Jonghyun. Don't go read a SHINee fic if a member's presence upsets you.
Just put him in the character list or in the tags maybe!!!
it feels disrespectful to him, to them, to shawols to judt ERASE him from everything we do and have always done, this would create a clear barrier and void between the fics written before and the fics written after his passing. It's secluding him in the past.

For two years personally I couldn't get myself to read jongkey fics I couldnt even re read my own jongkey one shot but now I'm fine and writing is an art of style and is involved in it. I get where others are coming from but I guess just put a warning and continue ur writing because fanfics are the only way we can pretend Jonghyun is with us and it was comforting for many shawols. So yup go ahead ofc they're always going to be some people who won't agree but u write for urself and if you wanna write that then do it! ヾ(^-^)ノ

I’m going to be super frank here so I apologize if I sound rude. My experience is that those who thinks it’s not okay to write Jonghyun aren’t shawols. They come for the tragedy and they berate everybody who loved him for not grieving in the way they expect us to.
The thing is, we all grieve very very differently. For some of us (myself included) writing Jonghyun is a way to keep him alive, it’s a way to remember and honor him. I am always extremely sad when I see people question whether or not it’s appropriate because it saddens me that well, if it’s not appropriate - how are we supposed to remember him? I don’t think it needs trigger warnings or M-ratings to write about him. His existence is not a tragedy and his life isn’t defined by his last decision.

Of course, if you write stories with triggering subjects - warn them. If you write that requires an M-rating, rate it for the subject.

If Jonghyun is important to you, write him. If it doesn’t feel wrong to you, do it. I guarantee that people won’t be angry with you for grieving or remembering in the way you do. And if they do, block them. People who dictate who you can and cannot write are not worth listening to. SHINee is five to you. Include him.

Many shawols still post photos of him. Many shawols still write him. Many shawols still paint him. We remember and honor differently - adding him to a story is not disrespectful to anyone, least of all Jonghyun. I’m sure he’d be honored you thought of him and still want to include him. He’s not forgotten. Let’s not pretend by erasing him from the new SHINee content we post.

Again, I’m really sorry if I seem rude. Merry Christmas to you! <3

I struggled with the same issue when it happened. I was writing several fanfictions with Jonghyun and I wondered if I simply should stop writing them. For a while I did that cos it was too painful to write about him but it was also painful to act as if he didn't exist, to completely strike him off of the narrative as if striking him off of my mind too. So I came to accept that writing about him is in a way a manner to keep him alive, at least for me. It helped me cope too. I decided to make my fictional Jonghyun's the happiest possible and even though I don't write as many s as I did before with him I still do. I wish reality could have been different but unfortunately, all I can do is keep him alive in my fiction. So I don't see anything wrong with writing about him. I understand that for some people it is painful to read about him and it's completely fine if they don't read my stories because of him being in them but I refuse to erase him. At least through my stories he can have a long fulfilling life with no pain and to me, as a shawol and someone who cherishes his memory that helps.

I agree with the other comments that keeping him alive through fiction is an art in its own way! Putting a trigger warning in the intro would be a good prerogative, and equally if people get triggered by it they certainly shouldn’t be bashing or critical of a writer, since they’ve been given fair warning and. Just not read it (but I do understand why they wouldn’t want to)

My ult group is SHINee and always will be and while some fans can be triggered by his death and wish not to write or read stories by it I still like to include him in mine. I think it’s a 50/50 situation. I rather write about it and not let fans forget (not that anyone would forget about it) because even though he is deceased he is always here with us and SHINee will always be 5hinee.
Put in saying you could put a warning or add his name in the tags :)

Hum, I put trigger warning at each chapter when there was evocation of Jonghyun's death for the readers being sensitive about it.

Even if I don't want to write fanfiction with jonghyun alive in our actual time line I have read some and it didn't bug me to much.

Some readers want to read about him to maintain him somehow alive other to honor him.

But the main point isn't about the readers but about your own intention. Write what you want, enjoy it and the readers will feel it and like your fanfic too.

Do what you like ;)

Personnaly i would like to read one fanfic about him but sticking the most possible to reality including his depressive mindset because it was his reality and denying it or occulting it is denying himself in a way. It is loving only a superficial part of him. His mindset was a whole thing making him who he was and without it he wouldn't have been the great artist and sensitive person he was. It would be a way to warn reader about how function the entertainment industry in Korea, how they badly handle psychological health issues too. But that's just my will because I love to learn while reading even if it is a fiction it can bring enlightening on some real aspect of life, morality.

I write about Jonghyun.
Although he isn’t the main I write about him as a sign of respect. To keep him alive throughout writing which is a form of art.

If you put it clearly in the foreword that jonghyun is included then those who don't like it don't need to read.. it's a sensitive subject ofc but in a way I think including him in fics, esp with love, helps keep his memory alive and I'm sure a lot of readers who miss him might wanna read about him?
