1998.

on the night of september 1st, a pair of twins was born into a high-middle class family in daejeon, south korea. their parents named them seo minwoo (older than her by five minutes) and seo yeonjae. her family is consists of five people which seo minsu (father), min youha (mother), seo danbyeol (sister), seo minwoo (fraternal twin) and herself. she used to have a little brother but he has died due to immune system problems. her father is a project engineer while her mother used to be a flight attendant before she decided to retire and open a bakery.

yeonjae once dreamed to become a flight attendant like her mother but since she still a naive little girl, her interests keep on changing. when she was born, her parents were 26 and 24 years old respectively. she and her siblings lived with her paternal grandparents in busan because both of her parents were busy with their works. however, she felt warm and contented since all of her cousins lived her grandparents' house, so every evening they will play together.

2005

at the age of seven, her family moved to new zealand after her father got transferred to one of the engineering company in auckland. also at that time, her mother works for new zealand airline so she thought that it is okay to bring their children with them. her grandparents clearly disagree with them but this is the only chance for them to get closer with their children. they also want their children to experience new things such as cultures, educations and also lifestyle.

yeonjae learnt english from her parents at the young age, so she pretty used to it. although her pronounciation is a little bit off, her friends still can understand what she said. she improvised herself by watching movies, practising or reading some books. she also studies really hard in school and jotted down some words that she doesn't understand. at home, she speaks fully korean with her family but sometimes mixed korean and english in one sentence.

she went to a local primary school that located near her house. at first, she was extremely anxious about making friends with her classmates but it turns out they welcomed her with open arms. she thought that they will bullied her, in fact, she gets along with them very well even though she couldn't seems to fit in with them. as long as she have friends, there are nothing to worry about.

2012

sadly, her life in new zealand was stopped before she could make it into 8th grade. she moved back to her motherland after spending many years in foreign country. to be truth, she was reluctant to go back because she already comfortable with the surrounding and also doesn't want to leave her friends behind. sooner or later, she knew that eventually she will return back to korea.

moving and changing schools are burdensome for her when she already adapted with current environment. for yeonjae, moving away means saying good bye to her dearest friends, starting over and trying to fit into the new environmennt. due to her sister being a final year high school student, she went through a lot of procedures since education in new zealand and korea aren't the same. thus, her parents paid more atention to danbyeol and minwoo (since he is the only son) rather than her.

her parents decided to live in tongyeong.apparently, they lived next to her mother's sister, aunty min nahyun and her nephew, min woojin. he is older than her by one year. to sum up, yeonjae went to tongyeong middle school (later tongyeong high school) with woojin while her twin, minwoo went to all boys middle school which is right next to her school.

mid-2012

yeonjae transferred to tongyeong middle school during 8th grade. she often goes to school with woojin and minwoo by walking since their school are next to each other. her first week of school is quite okau since her classmates treat her well, but she feels pressured due to the environmental changes. also, she parted with minwoo which makes her more difficult to adjust in new place. furthermore, she doesn't want to bother woojin since he also has his group of friends so she decided to spend her times by herself.

one day, she was in the canteen, enjoying her lunch by herself until someone called her name,

"seo yeonjae!"

she turned around and spotted woojin waved at her with a bright smile. she thought he was alone, apparently he with his friends.

she put her tray inside the basin near the counter and walked towards his table. woojin moved slightly from his seat and patted the space beside him, gestured her to sit beside him.

"guys, this is my cousin, seo yeonjae. she just transferred here last week." woojin introduced her to them as soon as she sat beside him.

"hi, nice to meet you guys." she smiles shyly.

"hello, sweetie! i'm lee junghee!" a friendly-looking girl, showing a sweet smile to her.

"i'm heo raon, your classmates. oh- by the way, i like your hairstyle" a medium-length hair girl with a mole under her left eye point at her hair. actually, she put extra effort on her hair since she wants to leave a good impression to people.

"i don't know woojin have a cute cousin- ouch!" the boy who had been silent for a while received a slap on the back by woojin. "stop, you scared her!"

all of them laughing at their behaviour. the boy took his hand out and said, "i'm kim muyeol. they called me dad muyeol." yeonjae gladly shook his hand. she felt welcomed and comfortable with them. they cracked some jokes and bickering out of the blue until the bell rang, indicates the lunch break is over.

it was nice to meet junghee, raon and muyeol. thanks to woojin because he is the one who make her friendship with the trio blooms.

after getting to know them, they become more closer. hanging out together has become a norm for her. it feel amazing to be a part of them because she is surrounded with people whom understand her, whom she trust and she know that she can tell anything without any judgement.

look at the bright side, yeonjae become more friendly than she is. they taught her a lot of things, but mostly they show her that family doesn't always mean blood. also, they knew about her father's favouritism towards her other siblings. they are the one who comfort her by giving advice, distract her by doing activities that she likes and many more. star gazing is one of the activites that they loves to do together other than play sports. sometimes, they would go to each other house just to watch movies together every weekend.

yeonjae is definitely is not the funny type of friends. this girl doesn't know how to put her words together or even cracked a joke. she just laughing whatever jokes that they threw to her. she can describe herself as the sherlock holmes of the squad. the first person to know anything and everything. you want to know the latest gossip ? finds the dirt on you ex-boyfriend/girlfriend? just say it, she willin to do anything for her friends.

thank god, she has a group of friends who are always be there for her through thick and thin. the friendship suprised her even in high school. yeonjae felt on top of the world when she knew her friends enrolled in the same high school as her. the most important thing, raon is still her classmates but this time, muyeol joined them. the trio always in group project together since junghee in her second year of high school.

things have changed in her family since her sister enrolled to medical school. her began to send her to cram school with her twin because he wants them to be like their sister. indeed she admitted that her sister is brainy, but she knew she cannot be like her. she is unbeatable. moreover, her father adored her twin more than her since he is the only son in the house. whatever he wants, he get. she didn't hold any grudges towards her siblings but she want to be better for her father. she want to show that she also can make him proud.

yeonjae studied every day just to impress her father and had to refuse everytime her friends asked her out. her schedules were occupied with cram school and self-study which make her less spend time with her friends. of course she felt guilty towards them but she can't do anything or else she will get herself grounded. there's one time her nose bleed because of the unhealthy time management. she couldn't get enough rest since her father forced her to study. "no one will remember second place." is something that her father always said to her.

her mother cannot do anything since she knew her husband is strict when it comes to education. she was shocked of her husband drastic changed. he used to not care about the education system since he always out of the town. but here he is, being a typical asian parents who constantly pressure their children to be in the top class. yeonjae gradually distances herself from him. her mother totally disagree with how her husband teaches their children; always comparing yeonjae's grades with minwoo and constantly pressured her with how successful her sister is.

yeonjae doesn't want to become a lawyer or a doctor. she realized that she cannot exceed her father's expectations. she doesn't want to do something she's not interested in. she just wants to be a writer or an author. that's all she want to do. although her grades can make her go to medical school, she simply told her father that she doesn't want to. it's now or never. she told him that all she did just want him be proud of her. he never be there for her everytime she mentally unstable, not even a second. she just want him to let her do what she wants, not controlling her like a puppet. thus, there's a bad blood between she and her father until she graduating from high school.

after her graduation, she decides to gain some work experience. she works as a tutor for middle school students, cashier and also a babysitter. she wants to save money so she can travel around the world with her family. while waiting for her college entrance result, she helped her mother at the bakery. she often hangs out with the gang and sometimes sleepover! she spent her time with them before she starts to study. she knows that if she got accept into university, she could not spend time with them anymore because her father will force her to focus on her studies.

she left tongyeong to pursue her studies. now, she is a junior at yonsei university, majored in korean language & literature. to be honest, yeonjae reluctant to leave tongyeong since she creates a lot of memories with her friends. at the same time, she felt relieved because she's no longer under his father's supervision. her twin, minwoo is lucky to study business administration at seoul national university.

during her first year in university, she lived in the dormitory and after that, she moved out and lived alone. her father rents a unit (living room, bedroom, kitchen) for her near the university. it's only takes 20 minutes walk from her apartment.

•to be honest, there are only a few people who know about her struggles. during high school, not all of her group of frined helped her since she just open up to junghee, raon and woojin (since he lived next to her so he knew about this). woojin often trying to get her out of the house to give her breaks from study. he doesn't like the fact that her father forced her to study and never give her rest. he also doesn't care how hard she study until her nose start to bleed. junghee will gave her so much advice and remind her not to do anything stupid. she was furious when she found out that yeonjae attempted to smoke, so she make sure that she will always be there to comfort her. she always rants about her problem to raon. she will listen to her until she calmed down and the came out with any ideas to entertain her.

His confidence, sense of humors, quick thought and ability to interact with people make him look personable that easily attract someone. Energetic. He is someone who doesn’t know the word tired. He have goals and dreams in his mind that he desperately want to achieve. He works full-heartedly, no qualms with putting in long days and nights to work for it. Knowledgeable. Hyunjae never miss a good opportunity to learn something new. He personally acknowledges that he is that kind of guy, someone that can understand and absorbs many different perspectives and ideas.

Intelligent. His friends would say that he’s gifted but for him, he still has the feeling that needs to do more. As expect, he will tell the truth if you ask him opinion even though his answer will make you annoyed. He observes social niceties but will tell you the brutal facts, for the greater good. Sporty. Hyunjae has been exposed with sports since he was a kid. He played soccer in high school and also was in Incheon youth soccer tournament. His father also a soccer coach at his university and of course he played for the team.

Egoistic. hyunjae always high on confidence and assume everyone else to be wrong. Thus, He never concerned about the feelings of other people through his words and actions. To be exact, he also doesn’t apologized easily because he think that if he apologized first, he will lose or you can say that he’s embarrassed. Insensitive. Being so rational, he often misjudges others feelings. He became insensitive because of fear of showing weakness unto others around him. He thinks that they will use his “weakness” to take advantage on him. Emotionally distant. He can be warm at first and then come across as emotionally distant. So, don’t expect him to answer your texts. He also tends to go m.i.a suddenly and then pick up where the relationship was left off. Even his friends are confused by this blow hot blow cold routine of him.

•Hyunjae is the oldest child in a family of four. His family is consists of his father, mother and also younger brother. His father, lee gwangmun is a retired soccer player and now is coaching for yonsei university soccer team, white tiger. His mother, yang miran is a Korean classic literature professor (yeonjae’s professor) while his younger brother, lee sunwoo is a sport science student and attend the same university as him.

•When he was a kid, he always played soccer with his father and brother every time his father was on leave. That’s when he was interested in soccer. He used to play for Incheon youth team during high school (2014-2016).

•He was raised in a laid-back family. Unlike yeonjae’s father, his father doesn’t care much what he wants to be, as long as he is happy and doesn’t create any chaos. For his family, Sunday is family day where they do family activities such as picnic, volunteering, holiday or went to church.

•High school is not nearly as bad as dramas depict it to be. his high school days were pretty normal and entertaining. While his friends went to hagwon, he prefers to study in his room while listening to music since his parents doesn’t force him. Without going to hagwon, he still managed to get into top three.

•Hyunjae is pretty popular in high school due to his achievements in sports, education and the most important, his good looks. He got a lot of nicknames during high school are jock, heartthrob, flower boy and even tsundere. girls always threw themselves to him and sometimes put their love letters in his locker. Even though he’s busy with his soccer practices, he still hangs out with his friends whenever he has free time. He used to have a girlfriend of two years in high school and they broke up after knowing she was cheating on him. It doesn’t take so much time for him to move on since he already heard all rumors about her.

•He wasn’t finding adjusting to university life would be so hard for him. He already has licensed since he learned to drive after finishing high school. His father bought a car for him as a give after he got into yonsei university. He commuted from his apartment to university every day after not staying in the dorm anymore.

chapter 1: be careful

it’s Saturday and most of student doesn’t have class except for anyone who wants to study in library and usually there’s a soccer training is held every Saturday. after yeonjae finished her morning shift at the library, she went to the field right after she received a text from changmin.

I’ll send you home after practice.
Anyway, you can come to the field to see me practice then we go home together,

And there she is, wearing blue knitted shirt tucked into wide jeans, sitting on the bleachers. She was so engrossed reading her novel that he didn’t notice there was a ball heading towards her.

“yeonjae, watch out!”

Hearing changmin’s scream, her head shot up and saw the ball heading towards her. she closed her eyes, waiting for the impact until someone pulled her into a hug, covered her from getting hit by the ball.

“ouch. My back.” Yeonjae opened her eyes and finds the boy wincing in pain. She stood up and look at the boy worriedly.

“are you okay? Oh no, I’m sorry. I should’ve dodged the ball. Are you in pain? What kind of question is that, of course he is. oh my god.” She asked him panicky while observing him. Changmin and the other players rushed towards them. He checked her out to see if she hurt somewhere and thankfully she perfectly fine.

“captain, are you okay?”

“yah, lee hyunjae. Are you okay?”

“hyung, I’m sorry!”

“it’s lee sunwoo’s fault!” changmin pointed at the culprit.

“changmin hyung!”

“can you guys please shut up! Of course I’m not okay!” the boy who she assumed his name is hyunjae touching his back, expect the pain to subside. Hyunjae glared at the red-headed boy and smacked his head.

“lee sunwoo, i will tell mum about this and see yourself grounded for a week” he chastised. “and you” he pointed at yeonjae. She was startled and stuttering, “m-me?”. He nodded.

“be careful next time.” he gathered his things, put on his black baseball cap and before he leaves, he glared at sunwoo for the last time.

“hyung… I’m sorry. it was just an accident!” the boy pleaded but hyunjae didn’t care less as he just leave him behind. The other players resumed their practice except for changmin.

“I’ll take you home.” He said while smiling to her.

Next Monday, she doesn’t have any class after 3 p.m. so she decided to go to library to do some revision. she walked through the shelves, search for her study material. She tried to reach the books at the very top of the shelf while tiptoeing.

“oh my god, why do they put all the things on top of the shelf- woah”

Suddenly, another hand took the book from her, their hands accidently touched. She turned around and saw the same boy who she met at the field. She lost her balance and before she could fall, she grabbed her upper arm.

“I told you to be careful.” He said while helping her to stand. She could feel the heat growing in her cheeks. By now they must be beyond an attractive rosiness. He handed her book and excused himself.

“uhm, hey!” yeonjae called him, received the look from the students in the library . he stopped his tracked and turned around, raised an eyebrow. She walked towards him, keeping the distance between them.

“I just want to say thank you for helping me. is your back still hurting?” she asked.

“it doesn’t hurt so bad. And you’re welcome.” He smiles at her before leaving. She’s stiff in her place and her lips lifted up without her knowing.

chapter 2: destiny?

Most of students went to night club to get wasted on Friday, yeonjae and danoh are no exception. Initially, yeonjae planned to cuddle with her cats while watching the notebook but she had to cancel her intention when danoh called her, said that her boyfriend dumped her. she isn’t fond with clubbing but since danoh was in pain, she wanted her to loosen up.

“I should tear his mother ing head off! How dare he cheat on you! My precious baby!” yeonjae gulped down her third shot of tequila.

“I know right! I’m a baby and I shouldn’t be treated like this! Where is changmin when I need him?” danoh rest her head on the table, let out a soft sigh.

Changmin couldn’t attend because he was too tired after finishing his delayed assignments. The girls enjoyed theirselves. After a while, danoh stand up and went to the dance floor, dancing with random guy. suddenly felt nauseous so she rushed to the bathroom. Before she could arrive, she bumped to a man and accidently puked on him.

“what the hell!” the main said in annoyed tone. He tried to push her away from him since she clinged onto him.

“oh my god, I’m so sor-“ she puked on him once again. He realized that the girl who he saved while she tried to take his leather jacket off so that she can cleaned up her mess.

he sighed and took off his jacket, threw it in the trash can. In a blink of an eye, he found that yeonjae passed out,

“how much he drank until she became like this.” He piggy back her and bring her to his house instead since he doesn’t know her address. When he arrived, he put her on his bed and cover her up. he decided to take a shower and prepares to sleep.

Yeonjae woke up at dawn, finding herself in unknown place. She became panicked until someone circled his arm around her waist, pulled her down so that she lay down beside him.

“just sleep. I didn’t do anything to you.” He said with a sleepy voice. Wait a minute… man voice… she had heard this voice before. She turned to her left and saw lee hyunjae.

“oh my god, I’m such a fool!” yeonjae mentally face palmed. She slowly removed hyunjae’s arm and quickly find her bag. She her phone and saw more than 100 messages and 10 calls from danoh and changmin.

“oh my ing god, I’m doomed.” she quietly leaved hyunjae’s apartment and not knowing that hyunjae was awake for the whole time.

After that incident, she swore that she will never get drunk again. she also do her best to avoid coming across with hyunjae. One day, she went to have a dinner with changmin and suddenly someone interrupts them,

“hey chang- oh, yeonjae you’re here.” He smirked at her. Oh, . Here’s comes the devil. Changmin stared at them weirdly.

“how come you guys knew each other? Oh yeah, I almost forgot about the ball incident.” He laughed after remember the incident, imagined how startled yeonjae is. Poor her. yeonjae on the other hand plays with her fingers, feeling anxious.

“by the way, how could you leave while I were sleeping. I could’ve send you home.” He said cooly, earning a glared from yeonjae. Changmin choked on his food and his eyes turned widened.

“are you guys hooked up or something? Eh, scratch that. My yeonjae would not do such things” joonha tried to make assumptions

“hell no! I would never do that, you know me well.” She defends herself. Hyunjae chuckles at her cuteness.

“explain yourself. I’m listening.” Now changmin turned to his sassy mode. Yeonjae let out a loud sighed and explain from A to Z.

“eun danoh… how could she bring my precious baby to the club with her. I should kill her when I see her.” changmin rants and stuffed his mouth with sushi.

“um, hyunjae-ssi… sorry for ruining your jacket.” Yeonjae make a proper apologized. He just nodded firmly while devoured himself with his food.

“can we just eat? I just got home from training.” He said while looking at the menu. They basically talked about everything. How he knew changmin, why he interested in soccer, everything. Yeonjae being herself, laugh whatever they said.

chapter 3: getting closer

of course after the dinner they exchanged phone numbers. Hyunjae constantly and making fun of her. she thought that he too comfortable enough with her. whenever they bumped into each other, he do all the weird things, such as winking. It makes her guts feel weird. Good weird.

On her way to the library for her shift, rain starts to pour heavily which making her clothes wet. Unluckily, she didn’t bring an umbrella with her like she always did. what I do in my past lives to make me be like this. Coincidently, hyunjae saw her sheltering under the tree that barely cover her. he realized that she was wearing white t-shirt that already soaking wet. He stopped his car on the side of the road and told her to enter his car.

Actually, she was reluctant to get into his car but she already late so she get in. hyunjae offered her his jacket and jersey to cover her wet t-shirt so no one can see her underneath. She promised to give him back but he told her to keep it.

final chapter: small things that matters

As time goes by. Hyunjae sometimes offer her ride after her shift end because she caught someone followed her once so he decided to take her home. They sometimes texted each other, asking what are they doing, have you eaten or want to watch my games. In front of their friends, they always bickering about the smallest things. Cats and dogs. hyunjae always started the war first. He would about the club incident, distract her from study or reading her novel and sometimes flirt with her.

Furthermore, they always get tease but their friends due to their closeness. They knew something going on between them. holding hands is a basic things for them and they didn’t care much. They keep their relationship (?) low key because they don’t want to make it fuss. They are comfortable of each other present and their closeness is not a big deal. Sometimes, they crashed into each other apartment just to watch movies or eat together.

Every time hyunjae has a tournament, yeonjae never missed to support him. When he won, he will run towards him after game and hugs him tightly, her legs will wrapped around his waist and her arms circling around his neck. If emotion ran high, they will go to the empty classroom just to give each other hugs. Actually, they kissed once when yeonjae ditched him to go lunch with muyeol (since they enter the same university). He doesn’t know what he getting worked out. He couldn’t contril his angry and things happened.

Sometimes they wonder what kind of relationship they have. They basically do everything together. Neither both of them have a courage to confess.

ending. They will end up together after they clear everything out but they keep from their friends (sadly, they knew about it). Yeonjae opened up about how her father control her life until now. Hyunjae followed yeonjae to junghee’s funeral and comfort her.

what would you say is your way of coping with stressful and emotional situations?

“um… actually, I’m not the best in coping with stress. There was one day that I attempt to smoke and junghee caught me. she scolded me with the verge of crying. She can’t believe that I will do such things. since that day, I started to distract myself by doing what I like such as photography, cooking, star-gazing and many more. When I feel like I’m dying, I will talked to junghee, seeking for her help but sometimes i just keep it to myself.”

“to my beautiful people, I love when we get together, laughing at each other jokes even though its kinda lame, movie nights and basically what we do together, I love it and appreciate it. I’m so sorry for all the years we spent, I say some hurtful things which I didn’t meaning. I know I was too honest, sarcastic and blunt. Oh my god, I’m such an idiot back then.” She laughs softly. “ I hope we still be friends until my last breathe. I love you”
