first off, hanbyul is loyal. if he likes you and you've gained his trust, he'll follow you to the ends of the world. this isn't always great, though, since he could get involved with ppl who don't mean well. usually, of course, he's can tell who means well and who wants to him over. he's also the resident mom friend, and he will smother his friends in affection, whether or not they want it. he genuinely cares about people, and he'll take time out of his own schedule to listen to their problems. he'll help try to solve them too, and he'll try to give them advice on how to deal with it. he's the kind of person to notice the small details, like your favorite coffee order, small nervous tics, etc. he remembers the small details and tries to make his friends' lives that much better by catering to them specifically. he's also quite cheerful and has a strong sense of humor. of course, sometimes he means to tell a joke but the way he words it makes it seem strange so no one laughs :((. but fr, if someone ever needs a pick-me-up, they can go to shenghui and he'll try his best to make them laugh ("a man showed up to a duel with nothing but paper and a pencil. he then proceeded to DRAW his weapon").

unfortunately, our boi has like zero patience. he hates repeating things he's already said ('it's not my fault you weren't listening') and if he was going to do something (like chores) but then someone else told him to do it, he won't do it anymore. petty extreme. he's also quite rash and makes on-the-whim decisions, especially if it involves people he's close to. it's just... he lets the anger go to his head and makes stupid choices. he's also very passive-aggressive. he usually tries not to let things bother him, but when they do, he can't just punch the other person, so he just shades them aggressively with his Sharp Biting Words TM. adding on to this, his mood literally changes like lightning. if he's originally in a good mood but then smth displeases him, even if it was trivial, he'll get angry like god himself sent down a thunderstorm.

if everything is going smoothly, though, hanbyul gives off the vibe of an sweet, absentminded boy. he can be fairly whimsical and just talk about the randomest things ("do you think plants can feel pain? how do we know what falling off a cliff feels like if we've never fallen off one before?"). he enjoys some deep talk, but the downside to that is he usually feels sad afterwards ;; though surprisingly, he's fairly realistic, having grown up in not-so-great circumstances, and does not harbor many high-flying dreams. 

⟪ BACKGROUND ⟫

hanbyul was born in incheon to a pretty normal family. nothing much happened, and he grew up normally, but when he was 10, his younger brother was born.

for some godawful reason, his parents called his brother ibyeol, which means farewell, and even 10-year-old hanbyul knew that it wasn't a good sign. sure enough, when hanbyul was 12, little ibyeol's health declined, and he had to spend a while in the hospital.

but hospital bills are expensive, and hanbyul watched his mother cry beside his brother's bed and his father go off to work early and come back late every day and wished that he could do something to help his family.

of course, he couldn't, so he chose to work hard in school and hopefully get into a good college and get a good job and help his family out retroactively. little man with big dreams lol.

fortunately, ibyeol's condition stabilized quickly, and though his brother was fine, the bills and loans piled up, and hanbyul's father pretty much spent all his time working. though he was making significant money and they were making good progress on paying everything back, he didn't need to spend even weekends at work, and it soon became clear that he was having An Affair TM.

not knowing what to do, hanbyul's mother took him and ibyeol to stay with her own parents, on the other side of town. hanbyul begged her not to leave and not to leave his father, but in the end, she still did.

after that, hanbyul went into a very apathetic state where he didn't care much about anything other than school. he threw himself into his work for years and by the time he reached 10th grade, he was the top of his class, played piano like he was going to major in it, and published a few poems in the newspaper.

it was min yoongi who found him and brought him back. yoongi was a senior and had been through something similar himself, so he took one look at hanbyul and knew that this dude was suffering. they had a math class together, so one day after class, yoongi pulled him aside and went 'hey kid, remember to take time and enjoy life', and hanbyul was like wtf, but yoongi took him on a walk and explained that grief is better let out than bottled in, and hanbyul thought he was over his sadness, but it was clear that he wasn't.

but he learned to let go and after yoongi left for college, he found some other friends to hang out with. then he decided to go to the college yoongi went to, which was also in incheon (money-saving techniques lol). yoongi introduced his roommate to him, and hanbyul went all doki doki because by god if that's not a beautiful man.

he didn't like being gay though because being gay in asia is bad, so he repressed his feelings for all of undergrad, and when he graduated, he went on to find a job as a web developer. unfortunately, he still needed a place to stay before he had enough money to be on his own, so he ended up crashing with yoongi and his roommate, whom he STILL has a crush on!!

however, right around that time (he was 22), hanbyul's lil bro came to find him in tears. turns out, ibyeol thinks he might have a crush on his best friend and was terribly ashamed and sought out his brother to tell him that it's not disgusting because, you know, adults know everything. hanbyul couldn't say that his dear little brother was wrong for being gay, so he ended up telling him that 'hey hey, i have a crush on a boy too!' and obv ibyeol stopped crying and was like omg no way!

after he sent ibyeol off, it turned out that yoongi's roommate was standing right behind him with an odd expression on his face. hanbyul was like ah welp this is it and then the roommate went 'well, if you must know, i won't tell anyone' and left and hanbyul was like ooookay?? what was that??

⟪ LIFESTYLE ⟫

it's been four years since hanbyul accidentally came out to his crush. he's 26, still living with yoongi and his roommate in their three-person apartment on the outskirts of incheon, working from home as a web developer. he goes home about twice a week to see his mom and his brother, who's 16 and also has pretty good grades in school. his mom thinks that he can get a way better job, but hanbyul's pretty happy with his current one for various reasons and isn't looking for change right now.

hanbyul has seen his shadow flicker in the bathroom mirror a lot, but because he spends the majority of his time staring at a computer screen, it's easy to write it off as just his eyes ing up; he also sometimes sees his reflection linger smile slightly wider in his makeup mirror but writes it off as he's usually tired as by the time he goes through his skincare routine at night (plus light's dim at night)

really, if hanbyul’s the mom friend, then woohyun is the boyfriend... friend. whenever you see woohyun, he always bounds up with a grin and a joke. he’s the very definition of optimistic, and he will stop at nothing to make sure his friends laugh. if you have a bad day, woohyun will talk you through it, playing with words until the logic lines up and you have no reason to worry. thankfully, woohyun’s very patient, so even if you lose your temper and yell at him, he’ll only wait until you’re calm enough to listen, and then he’ll continue in a gentle tone, telling you that everything will be okay.

however, woohyun’s not all laughs and sunshine. behind the image he throws up, woohyun struggles with his own troubles too. before the day begins, woohyun stands in front of the mirror and slaps himself alive. the stress of work and fakeness of society force him to hide his true feelings. his own perfectionism is killing him; if an assignment isn’t perfect, it’s not even worth turning in. criticism comes everywhere. woohyun, don't you know we don't have money to waste?; woohyun, time to apply for financial aid again; woohyun, you’re too clumsy for this. he knows, he hates it, but he doesn’t know what to do about it. he’s just too jaded, living with no purpose - he's already put in so much work, but is it worth it anymore?

⟪ BACKGROUND ⟫

woohyun was raised in a very catholic household and grew up with the whole sin vs no sin stuff pounded into his head. nothing about his early life is worth mentioning, except that he moved to incheon when he was 15. he never liked to learn and instead wanted to become a priest, but when he went to college, he discovered that he really liked chemistry.

his parents were like oh okay that's not too bad i guess but unfortunately, he met a certain mr. park hanbyul in his sophomore year and it was head over heels 'oh he's so pretty'. being raised catholic and all, it felt like a sin to like him, and it wasn't like he'd never had crushes on girls either. so woohyun decided to date a girl and forget about the whole thing. he somehow made it through undergrad without much trouble, but after hanbyul moved in with him and yoongi, woohyun couldn't deny his feelings anymore.

he prayed to god and everything, but it finally took yoongi overhearing him one day to convince him that being gay or bi or whatever wasn't a sin because 'yo, love is love and you deserve to your happiness'. so woohyun broke up with his girlfriend and proceeded to be too scared to flirt with hanbyul for a wholeass month, but then he accepted that the feelings weren't going to go away and started layering up on the flirt.

it was really an accident that he overheard hanbyul talking to ibyeol, but his heart in leapt because 'holy i might actually have a chance??' anyway, now he's like trying to flirt with the dude but hanbyul is oblivious.

hanbyul is an insightful person, able to make inferences and draw out information without much prior knowledge. he knows what to say to make other people feel better, and he can also make correct assumptions about the situation at hand based on very little information. in addition, hanbyul is very realistic. he’s a very logical person, and he knows his limits and will not push himself unless it's absolutely necessary. hanbyul’s goals also reflect upon his realisticness. he's also determined to do his job and will not give up even if he dies. giving up will not cross his mind unless something drastic happens. thankfully, he knows how to make his own decisions instead of having someone else make them for him. he listens to other opinions, but ultimately, he gets to decide his own fate, and if he falls by his own hand, so be it.

however, because he’s so logical, Hanbyul can sometimes be insensitive to other people’s feelings. hanbyul’s not necessarily a narrowminded person, but he definitely sticks to his beliefs, making him extremely opinionated (and stubborn). it makes him really, really insensitive when defending his opinions and beliefs since he just doesn’t give a what the other person feels; he just wants to make sure everyone knows why his side is the best. he’s not really trying to be a bad person, but it can seem like that because he’s so into the argument. unfortunately, as long as you present a better argument than him, he can be swayed to abandon his previous beliefs. he's sort of fickle in that way, and in accordance, gets bored with his hobbies often. he also tends to look at life through a jade-colored lens, believing that there can be no peace on earth as long as intelligent species continue to be selfish, etc etc.

⟪ BACKGROUND ⟫

Hanbyul doesn’t remember much from his childhood. Honestly, his first memory is of training. It sounds sad, but it’s the truth. He remembers racing against the other kids, some of whom were a little older than him, and he remembers winning. He remembers the praise he received, the envious gazes of the younger children, the angry looks of the older kids, and the desire to be even faster. Really, everything after that was all training.

During this training, Hanbyul met a girl. Her name was Jung Eunji, and she was his main rival for the position of scouting. She was definitely the fastest amongst the human girls, but Hanbyul was the fastest amongst the human boys. Sure, he and Eunji were rivals, but that didn’t mean they absolutely hated each other. In fact, they often practiced together and learned from each other. Actually, Eunji was the one who initiated these practice sessions, and Hanbyul would always be a little confused. After all, she might be trying to catch him off-guard and make him reveal all the secrets to his speed. However, much later, after Hanbyul landed the position of scout, he found out that Eunji liked him, that her parents desperately did not want her to become the scout since it was so dangerous, and that if she couldn’t be the scout, only Hanbyul could be it. She organized many practice sessions and shared her techniques so that he could become the best scout, and even though he hardly gets a chance to see her anymore, he has never forgotten how much he owes her.
