Proper, mature, the image of a sophisticated lady befit to be the face and representative of Song Logistics and Planning: one of the best known consulting firms for businesses in South Korea and its global partners. Or she would have been. But Dahye remains the seemingly perfect image. Nary a hair is out of place on her head.

background — Song Logistics and Planning. A multimillion, if not near billion, dollar company based in South Korea and with branches globally. Dahye was destined and brought up to one day take over the company from her father. She was also very good at it. She understood early onnin life how their business was run and went with her father to regular business trips. She knew it so much better than her little brother and sometimes even seemed like she'd take to it better than her own father. When she was 15, Dahye was engaged to Park Jinwoo, the son of one of her father's closest business partners, and it was agreed that once they finished University they'd marry and begin taking more active roles in the company. Everything was set up so perfectly. Jinwoo was very much likeable anx a goodnpwrson: he'd be an amazing husband and partner. Her father ensured no one ever bat an eye about her being a woman who'd be in charge. Dahye travelled the world, saw so many things, has just about anything anyone could want. All she just needed to do was study something in University relevant to running the company and she'd be set for quite a comfortable life.

And that's how it should have been had she not decided to write a simple greeting on her arm on her 18th birthday. Which in itself was weird for her. Her family never put much stock into soulmates and the writing on the skin. Sure, her parents were soulmates: but apparently they had a grandparent or great aunt or something similar that met their supposed soulmate: that person ended up being a terrible humannbeing and murdered that relative. So the Songs always took soulmates with a grain of salt. Besides: Jinwoo and Dahye were perfect for each other already. Deep down however, Dahye sort of wanted to just NOT do what was planned for her. Life would be so so so easy. This is so true. She did love the idea of being the CEO and honestly the idea of having a life with Jinwoo was rather fairytalelike. But Dahye always felt like something wasn't quite right with all this. It was too picture perfect. Great parents, great fiancee, great life...so maybe it was a moment of wishful rebellion that made her write "Hi." on her arm that evening after her birthday party.

She didn't anticipate the response she got back:

สวัสดี! เข้าใจไหม?

Dahye was stunned. What was this beautifully written language? She spent that night figuring out it was Thai and whoever this was, was saying hello and asking if she understood. She didn't. But instead of being frustrated, she was determined to respond back in his language. It took her a little  it if studying, but she told him she was Korean and didn't speak Thai. But that wouldn't stop her. Dahye had her parents hire a private tutor to teach her Thai and she practiced extensively on her own. She felt a new determination to communicate with him on his terms in his language.

With that, Dahye learned something about herself. The process if learning Thai and language fascinated her. It was something she became passionate about. And it was all because of her soulmate that she had this new, exciting thing in her perfect but boring life. Dahye had new life and fire in her. She wanted to study language, teach it to others, travel the world learning to speak to others!!! ...basically nothing that was planned for her.

Her parents responded extremely well. They are wary if the circumstances that led up to it, but love seeing their child passionate. So they bless her decision to study language and lingusitics. Jinwoo says he's happy for her, and a little relieved himself since he...doesn't exactly like girls. He likes her but as a close friend. They end up going to the same University together, and things are all falling into place for her. She even starts a travel blog for her various trips around the world. Her last trip was to Bangkok City, the romantic in her sorta hoping she might meet Fong like destiny. His name is Fong, he's Thai, and even though she knows meeting him will be difficult, she wants to. But until that day, Dahye is moving her life along and finding new exciting things to fill it with.

ABOUT ELLIS...

A day after his 18th birthday, Ellis received a message on his arm, in Korean. Just a simple "Hi." that would change his life forever. Originally from Hong Kong, his family were never well off. They led a hard life and were never well off. As their only son, his parents worked day and night to provide for him. His father is Chinese while his mother is Thai, and Ellis grew up with a life filled with both cultures. When he was 15, his parents moved to Korea when a friend of the family managed to get his father a job. While the job afforded them a more comfortable living, they were nowhere near rich , and his parents continued to work very hard.

He'd just turned 18 when he received that greeting. He;d honestly answered her in Thai mostly as a joke. The likelihood that this more than likely Korean person would understand it was low. He'd tease them a little before finally responding in Korean. By now he was fluent in the language. But to his amazement, he got a response in poor, but earnestly written Thai. The next few months were really something to him. This girl seemed so eager to converse with him Thai. Ellis isn't lying when he says he fell for her a little, and the two seemed to share a connection. One thing they both seemed to agree on was that they were young, and had their lives ahead of them. Both agreed to not share their full names: it seems silly, but at the time it seemed to make sense. Ellis told her his name was Fong, and she said to just use her surname Song. This let them get to know each other via only message and really see if they were right without feeling obligated. Ellis didn't know how he'd already impacted her, but he did know just two months in he'd want to meet her eventually. But also, just before they decided to go to university, they came to an agreement: once they finished university, they'd meet at Namsan Tower and put a lock there, even if it was only out of friendship. Until then, they'd stop communicating. They wanted to grow up a bit before making any lasting decisions.

Ellis was one of the few who was granted scholarship in his first year at the university, and he now studies Veterinary Medicine, doing his parents very proud.

THEIR LOVESTORY...

DAHYE POV

It's second year now, and just as they promised, she hasn't really reached out to Fong. She still thinks of him fondly, but now has a rather fullfilling life at university. It's just before the semester is to start, and she decides to visit the dogs at the campus vet. There, working the desk, was Ellis Shum. Dahye has seen him around a bit campus, but this is the first time she is actually talking to him one on one. It's a slow day, and there's not realy any dogs or other animals for her to play with there. But then, it starts raining.

"Oh no..."

"No umbrella?"

"No."

"Just hang out here until the rain lets up!"

She thanks him and decides to study for her next class. She is busy trying to sound out something from her linguistics alphabet, struggling, when he chimes in and corrects her. He tells her he's from Hong Kong, so the sound she is making is one he uses with Cantonese. That's how they start conversing about his time in Hong Kong, and both discover that they both actually speak English fairly fluently.  They are having such a good conversation that she nearly misses her next appointment. As she is rushing out, Ellis quickly asks her if she'd like to maybe, he doesn't know, get coffee or something?

Over the course of their next meeting, he discovers that Dahye, though known for her polite and sometimes stiff demeanor, is actually quite lively in conversation.  She is a little surprised to find out that he isn't in atheletics and is purely academic. To her, Ellis looks like he should be playing basketball or something similar. Despite being complete opposites, Dahye and Ellis immediately hit it off. They both have so many thing in common personalities aside. They enjoy many of the same foods, movies, books, and maybe most importantly, they bond over the fact that they are very filial and are trying to make their parents proud. The topic of soulmates does come up.

"I don't think we are set in stone with a soulmate. It's beautiful when it works out, but does that mean those people who lose their soulmate before ever meeting them have to be alone? It's cruel. So I haven't met mine yet, though we know the otjer exists. He's a good person, and I have a special place for them, but it's not final yet." Ellis seemed quiet when she explained this, but he only smiles at her and says he thinks the same way a bit and she just reminded him of someone he cares a great deal about. He also hasn't met his soulmate yet.

The spark grows.

A few weeks in: they are such good friends. Dahye considers him among her inner circle. She's the person he calls when he needs helps with something and is there to keep him company when he's having long nights of studying. He often joins her when she and her girls have a night out s their "muscle" in the event they don't want boys bothering them. It shouldn't surprise her when he asks her, still in scrubs and running after her from the vet clinic, to go on a date with him. But it does, and he has to tell her he doesn't care if she's his soulmate or not. He likes her and wants to be with her. Dahye quickly agrees, and they begin dating.

The spark grows stronger.

Everything feels right. She's on cloud nine. Ellis is a very attentive boyfriend, she a sweet girlfriend, and things are just so so right. His energy brings out the best in her while she is the positive influence that keeps him from panicking when things get out of hand. Deep down, Dahye wishes Ellis was her soulmate, and part of her feels a little guilty about that. Fong, at this pint, stands no chance against Ellis, and she'd choose him over her actual soulmate in a heartbeat.

Doubt begins.

One day, with Lalin third wheeling on a trip to the library, she asks Dahye to explain something she is having difficulty understanding. Without a thought, Dahye thinks and then starts explaining to her in Thai so she can understand better. Ellis stops and gives her a strange look.

"You speak Thai?"

"Oops. I never told you? I learned it for my soulmate a couple years ago." Ellis is quiet, looking very confused, "something wrong?"

"Nothin, babe. It's just such a random language."

"Isn't it? I think he was teasing me a little when he first wrote me, asking me if I understood when I'm sure the little scamp knew I didn't." Ellis looks a little pale now, "you sure you're okay?"

"I'm fine! To the library!"

Guilt creeps in.

It's only a couple of days later that he asks her a little more about her soulmate. She is surprised he;s bringing it up, but proceeds to tell him about her first encounter with her, probably Thai, soulmate, and the impact he had on her.

"So long story short, I stopped being an heiress because I fell for some boy named Fong. A little stupid and romantic of me right?"

ELLIS POV

Oh crap. Oh crap oh crap oh crap...!!!

He's finally put the pieces together. SONG Dahye. Dahye who didn't believe soulmates were neccessarily the end all be all. Dahye who had the same ideals as Song. Song Dahye who speaks THAI. His girlfriend is his actual soulmate. Normal people should be happy. He should be happy. The universe put them together anyhow. He. Should. Be. Happy,

But all he knows is that he inadvertently influenced Dahye into leaving a life that would have been assured riches and comfort. Instead she is studying her off, working a part time job in the library, not sleeping enough, and still making time to meet with him even though he can see how tired she is.  She gave up her easy, well off life. For him. For. Him. In Ellis' mind he has nothing to offer. Even if he graduates, he won't make the kind of money as a vet she would be accustomed to. He could barely pay for their coffee right now. How selfish is he for taking her away from all that? Okay, but what's done is done. But he;s being selfish for wanting her to himself right? Some foreigner with no name, a poor family, nothing to offer her. How could he keep her?  Ellis wasn't worthy of her. He didn't deserve her...!

DAHYE POV

Since that night, Ellis became harder to get a hold of. Dahye invites him out, asks him his schedule, and he just always always seems busy. At first, she assumes school is just hard for him at the moment. Dahye is distressing more and more. He's not answering her calls like her used to or respoding to her emojis or good night texts. He doesn't read her messages on kkt talk for hours or even once for a whole day. Dahye is so confused. She keeps thinking back to the conversation. Sure, she'd never mentioned her family being rich or how much Fong influenced her life decisions, but nothing else was said that should have upset him. Was he upset at her? Did she do something wrong?

She doesn't understand, and Ellis isn't forthcoming. She tries to talk to him about his distance, but it's no use. She asks her friends what is happening, do they know?

Finally, one day, she is about to ask him what is wrong when he cuts her off:

"Let's break up."

"...what? Why? What...what...what did I do...?" He's so quiet before responding.

"I met my soulmate."

Dahye prides herself on keeping her emotions in check. But the finality in how he just says those words breaks her heart. She quietly accepts it, ends the call, and doesn't leave her room for three days. Her friends all swooping in to comfort her. She doesn't cry. Her face is blank as she explains to them what has happened. She tells them that even though she really loves Ellis, and despite their words about soulmates from before, in the end she would never compare to his soulmate. There is nothing else to it. He chose his soulmate over her. It explains why he has been so distant. She should be happy for him...Jinwoo has to hold and comfort her as she finally just cries harder than she has in her entire life. Many threats to Ellis's life are uttered by her friends that evening.

Ellis is still avoiding her. She could have accepted if her fell in love with someone else, she really could have. His distance however is what hurts her the most. So she straightens herself up, wipes her tears away, and tries to move on with her life. She wants to write to Fong so badly. Maybe he'd understand and tell her something that would help or comfort her. But she won;t unload her problems on him: he has to study.

Dahye feels like a broken-hearted fool.

But slowly, she starts hearing things.

"Did you know Ellis is part Thai? I heard him talking to his mom the other day."

"Ellis once told me how he met his soulmate a day after his 18th birthday. He made a deal to only meet once university was done. or something really dumb."

"Ugh, I keep seeing Ellis walking around all alone all the time now. It's kinda pathetic."

"Do we write his name Ellis Shum, Ellis Shum Fong, or Shum Fong?"

And then it clicks.

ELLIS POV

He feels like a huge . He meant it when he said he met his soulmate. He hears from one of her friends about the state she's in, gets a death threat or two from Jinwoo, gets told off by his parents when he calls and tells them about it. Ellis knows, he KNOWS he's being cruel. But it's better for her to move on. Hate him so she can meet someone else.

And then pieces start coming together. The people around Dahye are putting clues together.

"I heard them use your full name once. Ellis Shum Fong. Her soulmate's name is Fong. Coincidence?"

He deflects questions aimed at him. He avoid going to where he once would always go with Dahye. He's not sleeping well.

But what else could he do?

That's when he sees the writing on his arm:

Fong.

We promised not to bother each other but I need someone to talk to.

 I met someone.

I love him.

But I don't think he loves me.

I think I disappointed him and he won't tell me why.

Am I that pathetic? That he won't even bother telling me the truth?

Seeing Dahye break down and write to "fong" just breaks Ellis. He grabs his jacket, writes in responseo n his arm hastily "IM COMING OVER", phone in hand, ready to call her and finally just tell her the truth and W H O A he opens the door and there she is outside his door. Her face is stony, and written on her arm in her neat scrawl is the note she'd just written him.

He'd underestimated Dahye's logic.

Wordlessly, he just shows her his arm after seeing his sloppy response on hers.

She then pushes her way into his room.

DAHYE POV

It doesn't take long for Ellis to spill everything. Dahye stays quiet and listens to everything, sitting at his desk while he lets it all out. How sorry he is. How foolish he feels. How dumb he is. How sorry he is for making her do something she-

"First of all," Dahye interrupts him, face still stone cold, "am I not allowed a say in this? Am I not a free thinking adult capable of making a decision for myself?"

"Yes! Of course you are!"

"Then what gives you the idea that you solely, alone, without ever meeting me, made me give up all the good things in my life?"

"But-"

"Ellis Shum Fong, you are so stupid. You keep assuming my life got so much worse after we met that you don't see how happy I am. How happy my family is for me. How happy my former fiancee is. How happy I am to have people in my life who care about me. How happy YOU, yes you you big dummy, have made me. You're so caught up in thinking how worthy you are of me that you're not seeing what's right in front of you. Soulmate or not, I would have picked you. Would you have not picked me?"

"No, no, I would have."

"Do you think I wouldn't have picked you? Do you need me to tell you more often that I love you? Because I can do that," she then starts writing 'I love you' in Thai on her arm for him multiple times.

"No, I just...stop that you're covering the whole arm!"

"Clearly you don't believe me."

"Stop that!"

"Make me."

Her childish response finally breaks the mood and Ellis sweeps her up into his arms, holding her tight. She tries to wriggle out of his hold, but she hears him sniffle a little and sighs, sagging into his arms. He whispers that he loves her, presses soft kisses to her face, and Dahye decides she couldn't be happier.

That is, until the next morning after she slipped out to go to her class while her big idiot sleeps in. She's halfway there when she looks at her arm and see's a heart drawn on it.

Now she's even happier.
