Cheerful : Erika is someone who seemingly does not let anything get her down and is always laughing and smiling. When interacting with others, she'll try her best to remain enthusiastic.

Loyal : Erika does not drop her loved ones just because someone else can give her something better or what she wants. She knows who are the ones who were there with her and stands by them, protecting them with her life.

Creative : Erika can seemingly come up with any ideas or lyrics on the spot, and she loves making up lyrics and ideas. She loves thinking of imaginary worlds and "what if this happened" situations which spur her to create things.

Zealous : Erika believes that if you truly love something, you should put as much effort as you can into it, and going with this, she puts all her effort into performing, making sure she gets everything perfect and has memorised it by heart before she goes for evaluations / music shows / fanmeets.

Sensitive : Erika is easily hurt by harsh words or others' suffering. She doesn't understand why people would want to hurt others, whether intentionally or unintentionally, and feels that even if you wish to criticise someone in order to correct them, you should tell them so patiently rather than lashing out and using harsh words.

Needy and validation-seeking : Growing up as a loner, Erika often felt there are few people who love her, and it didn't stop when she became an idol. If people don't praise her, she feels that she had not done well or is unloved. She often says things like "oh dear, I didn't do so well this time" hoping others will assure her she did her best. She tries her best to help others or stay on their good side, because she wants people to like her.

Cowardly and timid : Erika does not like making her loved ones angry or getting into conflicts, so she often keeps her true opinions and feelings to herself. If she accidentally expressed an opinion others do not agree with, she will just agree to disagree for fear of ruining her relationship with the person / people. She is easily scared by people who are angry and fierce.

Kind and selfless : Erika tries to avoid hurting others, instead uplifting them wherever possible. She never fails to give her loved ones or people she finds cool words of encouragement when needed, even if she can't say much. She tries her best to show genuine love to everyone around her, even sacrificing herself to make them happy.

Shy and modest : Erika finds it intimidating to interact with people she does not know and tries to avoid drawing attention to herself, only speaking up when she needs something or when she has a strong opinion, or if she is spoken to first. Despite having a rather good figure, she tends to avoid wearing overly revealing clothes when she is not performing. She likes compliments, but doesn't let them get to her head. Her usual response to compliments is "do you really think so?" rather than readily thanking the person who offered her a compliment.

Protective : As she has few friends due to her shy personality and status as an idol, Erika greatly cherishes those who were nice enough to make the effort to befriend her, and would do anything to not lose them. Mess with them? Prepare for Erika to come for you with no mercy.

Impulsive : Going along with her spirit of wanting to protect her friends and being easily hurt, Erika has a tendency to act before thinking in "heat of the moment" situations. Thankfully, her more level-headed groupmates are usually around to descelate the situation and prevent anyone from getting into trouble.

background

Erika was born in 2000 to a couple who settled down in Singapore in the 1990's. Her mother was a home-based piano teacher and her father enjoyed writing poems in his spare time, and Erika quickly developed a love of poetry and music. Erika begged her mother to teach her how to play the piano many times as a child, and she finally got her wish when she was six years old. Erika was intrigued by how words and melodies came together to form songs, and started writing poems and coming up with piano melodies to accompany them.

When Erika started primary school, she decided to take up ballet as her extracurricular activity after watching the Barbie Nutcracker movie. It was also when Erika was in Primary Three that the H1N1 crisis struck, and her friend sent her a link to a Youtube parody of Wonder Girls' nobody with lyrics relevant to the crisis. Erika went to search for the original song and ended up liking it, and she later started listening to and following other Kpop groups that were popular at the time like SNSD, 2NE1, Secret, After School and T-ara.

Erika continued taking dance as an extracurricular activity as well as playing the piano and writing songs until she graduated from secondary school, and after taking her O levels in 2016, she decided to try auditioning for companies, and sent an audition video to several companies. One of the companies she recieved a reply from was SM Entertainment, and they were one of Erika's choices to become a trainee at as she knew by then they were the biggest entertainment company in Korea. Though she had also heard about their low pay and alleged abuse of artistes in addition to the tough trainee programmes, she still wanted to go for it, seeing how famous groups like SNSD, f(x) and Red Velvet became. And with that, Erika moved to Korea and started a new life as a SM Entertainment trainee, and after two years of training, Erika debuted in their girl group Fantasy in 2018.

— The only thing Erika really struggled with as a trainee was learning Korean, since she was already rather proficient in dance and she could sing quite well due to her being able to recognise notes from her training in piano. Yes, the trainings were tough and hours were long, and diets were restrictive, but Erika expected it knowing how strict entertainment companies are, especially SM, the biggest company in Korea with the most famous idols.

During her time as a trainee, Erika made friends with two girls called Taeri and Marie, who wanted to improve in dancing, and Erika was more than willing to impart her knowledge to them. In particular, Erika enjoyed spending time with Marie due to the latter's sweet personality. However, Marie was close to Taeri, and Erika was scared to approach Marie, fearing she would end up being the third wheel among them, so Erika mostly kept to herself or hung out with the other girls in her trainee batch outside of practise. After a year in the trainee program, Erika was chosen to be a member of Fantasy, along with Taeri and Marie.

idol life

— Erika grew up in a safe and protected environment and kept to herself, so she never had any trouble with netizens until she became a Fantasy member. One of the most common bad things idols have to deal with is ual harassment, and the Fantasy members were not spared. As Erika was one of the members who was fluent in English, other members would show her forums or tweets about Fantasy or her that were in English, and ask her what they said. Though there were many inappropriate comments on her and the other members, Erika would lie saying things like "they said our mv / performance was very nice" or that a certain member did well / is pretty. However, though she pretended the lewd comments didn't exist, she couldn't help but let them get to her. Some more daring fans even sent such comments directly to her on her social media, which made her even more scared. As time went by, Erika became afraid to appear in public and at live shows / fanmeetings, fearing for what would happen to her and crying before having to face fans or perform live.

Erika also found herself having feelings for one of her group members, but to fans, dating is the biggest sin an idol can commit, and homoual relationships aren't exactly acceptable in South Korea yet. However, Erika found her feelings for Marie growing, and became more agonised as she had to continue to hide her feelings, and it didn't help that Taeri, wanting more attention from fans, started bullying Marie. Not only did Erika want to lose Taeri as a friend by confronting her and calling her out for her behaviour, but she did not want to lose Marie as a friend if Marie did not feel the same way towards her.

scandals/headlines

— 2020 / whenever you feel appropriate | "Fantasy's Erika suffering from mental health issues?" Due to Erika having anxiety attacks before performances, SM Entertainment forced her to get treatment, and the paparazzi spotted one of SM's company cars outside a psychiatric clinic, and Erika leaving the clinic and entering the car some time later. This scandal is true.
