► Youngjo is a gentleman and that's how most people who have encountered him describe him as. He possesses the good and admirable traits a gentleman has in order to be called so. The first traits are being courteous and polite. These two come hand-in-hand when it comes to being a gentleman. Youngjo knows the basics like asking politely and giving thanks when he shows appreciation and gratitude, apologize when he has done something that requires an apology, saying excuse me instead of pushing people out of his way, and all the etiquette you could think of. What makes him likeable is his ability to be interested in a conversation. He would gladly listen to your problems and stories because he's got excellent focus and can put it all on listening to whatever it is you have to say. People feel really happy knowing that he listened to them talk because not a lot of people like hearing other people's problems or stories and they tend to even share their own while not letting the other person finish so it's a very kind act. He shows respect to someone by giving them affirmation in which he compliments them like this “You were incredibly patient and understanding when dealing with that difficult situation.”. He recognizes their achievements no matter how big or small and hold them in high regard. He listens and understands that his goals are just as important as your so he doesn't undermine them. Youngjo displays kindess and concern towards others on a daily basis. He is sensitive with people's emotions and would ask them if they wanted to talk about it or vent about it because he would be willing to listen. He would tell them that he would always be there if they needed someone to talk to. Youngjo is one of the must trusted people you would ever meet. He has proven countless times that he could follow through with all the promises he keeps. He won't believe any of the gossips and negative things said about a person unless he has seen it for himself. He is willing to admit his mistakes and take full responsibility for the consequences of his actions. And finally the final trait that just shows the most common thing people think about when they hear the word gentleman. Debonair means that he is very confident, stylish, and charming. He makes sure to take care of his appearance and present the best self he can be which just shows how charming he could be. The way he presents certainly makes him attractive and appealling to others giving off a very good impression just based on looks.

 

► Youngjo isn't afraid to give people a reality check when they need to know that what they want couldn't be achieved. Friends always ask for his opinion when out shopping, because they know he'll give the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help him God when they try on a hideous dress.Most of the time Youngjo tends to just take a leap of faith and do what his mind is set to and then go to the person he confides in and get feedback. He is willing to step out on his own and get stuff done. He doesn't need anyone’s help and can get the job done quickly. When Youngjo is loyal, he doesn't just accept any 'bs' coming from anyone, or would follow anyone blindly like a slave, but he can see what your actions and beliefs really represent and what they stand for, and accept all the consequences that come with it,  and be availabe for you through good times and bad times. He has this mentality that he could do more, want more, and need more and when it comes to success he is driven to do his best and always feels like he could always be better. Formal as in "boy goes to girls house to pick her up for prom and is super formal towards her parents" type of formal. He doesn't use profanities, slang terms, nor does he tell bad/offensive jokes. He uses the proper titles of respect when adressing someone and is just the guy who every parent wants as a son-in-law. But of course he has his bashers who just think that it's all a front he puts up to get people to like him. Youngjo holds back from making comments or divulging information that will cause others to feel embarrassment, shame, or other discomfort. He often forgives those who have done him wrong but this often leads to people abusing his kindness. He isn't really afraid to voice out his own opinion on any subject. He'll call you out when he sees that you are doing something incorrect or inappropriate and won't even be embarrased by it. So you might hear something like this "Hey! Stop touching that woman's lady parts!" from the end of the hallway alerting everyone within earshot.

 

► There are people who think of Youngjo as cold and cruel because of his stoic expression(aka his resting face). It usually gets him in trouble with the wrong kinds of people who misunderstand. "You got something to say to my face?" is something common he hears when these types of people see him with his expression. They assume that he has a problem with them that's why he has that expression but in reality that's just how he looks like with a resting face. Youngjo is always asked "Is everything alright?" because they mistake him for being in a bad mood. There are times when Youngjo has the tendency to be controlling and so he asserts his will and tries to control people without taking their feelings into consideration. This is usually his last resort when people are stubborn and won't follow his advise so he takes it upon himself to control the situation. This boy can hold grudges and with his impassive nature you have no idea who he has a grudge on so he perfectly masks it. It takes so much to get him to have a grudge on someone and when he does he will get his revenge one way or another (either petty revenge, pro revenge, or nuclear revenge; see reddit for reference on these types of revenge.). There are times when people just do the most inappropriate things and normally people just talk it through but not Youngjo. He has a short fuse and if it blows then say goodbye to the gentleman you once knew because that person is gone. Ok maybe not fully gone but he still will blow up on your face telling you to stop whatever you are doing that is causing him to be annoyed with you. To be completey honest, Youngjo isn't that much of an exciting person. Sure he is a gentleman but other than that he has no idea how to have fun whatsoever. He has the same routine every single day and is basically like a robot with no life. The only thing he isn't boring in is when you are in a conversation with him which is when he is active the most but other than that, he is completely dull. He would make a great lawyer if he ever wanted to pursue that career just because of his stubborness. He would not admit defeat even if he knows he is wrong(only admits defeat when a super strong point was made and there is no way to counter it any longer). He is too stubborn to admit that he is stubborn. Now the most unexpected trait a gentleman could possess is the one where he starts playing dirty. When it comes to a certain point, Youngjo would have to start using underhanded tactics to achieve his goals. He'll become manipulative and get you to do what he wants. Heck, he'll even play the victim even to get you to feel sorry for him. Youngjo will commit these devious acts until he achieves his goal(usually a last resort but could still do it anytime.). 

 

background / 

► Seo Youngjo was born at just a few minutes before his brother Seungcheol at the break of dawn. This, unfortunately, led to the death of his mother who died due to heavy bleeding after giving birth leaving Seungwon, his father, to raise them single-handedly. What you must know about the Seo family is that they are known for only having swordsman and one of the best at that. It is an unbroken tradition that Seungwon chooses to continue. So when his oldest, Hongbin, was at the right age, he started training him and soon followed Youngjo and Seungcheol when they were also at the right age.

 

As part of a noble family, he had to learn all the proper etiquette that needed to be applied in certain situations which, out of the three siblings, Youngjo excelled at. He was known by the other noble family's and townsfolk for being well-mannered and polite to everyone he comes across in contrast to his fellow siblings who were just a tad far back on the well-mannered spectrum. When it came to swordsmanship, Seungwon naturally took the role as his childrens mentor. He would teach them how to properly wield the weapon, the basic strikes and stabs, how to dodge and counter attack, and other family-made techniques. While Youngjo listened and copied the movements his father had demonstrated, he just didn't feel as if swordsmanship was for him. It was as if he had another calling. Something far more different than swordsmanship.

 

During a stroll through the woods, Youngjo comes across a bow and several arrows laying on the ground by a tree. Looking around it seemed like the owner had forgotten his equipment. Curiosity struck Youngjo as he had never held a bow nor fired an arrow from one but he had seen how it works from the local archers. He remembered how to place the arrow on the bow, pull back the string at the right length, and let go to fire the arrow to the desired target. So that is exactly what he did. He had brought an apple with him as a snack and so he decided to use it as a target. After many attempts, he had finally pierced an arrow through the apple and the satisfaction came crashing down on him. This was it. This was what he had been looking for. It gave him a feeling that swordsmanship couldn't. So he rushed back to his home, bow and arrows in hand, and told his dad that he wanted to take up Archery instead of swordsmanship as he showed his father the bow and arrows he had brought with him. He fired an arrow at an apple he had set down to show his father his potential in this skill. Seungwon, however, was not impressed. He said that it was tradition that all members of the family were to become swordsmen and that they were to be trained by there father. Before Youngjo could get a word in, his father broke the bow and arrows he had and threw them in the fire place burning the weapons to ash.

 

It hurt to see that his father was not on board with what Youngjo wanted to pursue. This didn't stop him as he had gone to the local blacksmith to learn how to create bows and arrows out of simple materials so that when his father ever broke them again, he'd be able to make new ones with ease. At first he didn't want his father to find out that he had been secretly going to the forest after training to practice his archery but his father found out on his own when he had spotted the young boy shooting targets he had drawn on several trees. He stomped towards his son who knew what was about to happen. Seungwon broke the bow and arrows and scolded him about disobeying tradition and how he was disgracing the family before leaving. Youngjo started making his new set of bows and arrows and the cycle continued on up until Youngjo had stopped going to his father's lessons altogether and just headed straight for the forest honing his skills. His brothers were worried as to what would happen to their brother with this sudden change. Though they did know and supported Youngjo in his pursuit in archery, they were also afraid of what their father was capable of doing when a certain line would be crossed. 

 

Seungwon knew that scolding Youngjo and breaking his bows and arrows wasn't helping in any way so he shunned him, treated him like an outcast. Youngjo didn't expect it to lead to this. He tried to reason with his father but Seungwon had already made up his mind. If he wasn't going to follow the family tradition, then he wasn't worthy to be treated as family. It hurt Youngjo, badly. What was he supposed to do? Live a life where he wasn't happy with what he does or follow his dreams but at the cost of his father's love? It was a lose-lose situation but since he had already started his pursuit, there was no going back anymore. He had to live like this. Youngjo had tried many things to try and impress his father in an attempt to get his fathers approval and not treat him like an outcast any longer but even with him being the most talented and well-mannered of the sons, his father still shunned him. Youngjo didn't know what else to do. He had come to the realization that nothing he does will ever be enough for his father to accept him and his path. 

 

Time came when his siblings had been sent to join the army. Youngjo could have joined any time but chose to join when his siblings were deemed ready by their father. Once they had officially become soldiers of Yul news about it spread quickly as it was usually a big deal when swordsmen from their family join the army and especially now that one of them wasn't a swordsman but an marksman. Each of the siblings had shown the results of their training and have garnered lots of praise from the citizens, soldiers, and even Prince Euikyeol himself. 

 

The day came when Changkyun's declaration of war was heard. Yul would be forced to join Dalbyeol's side in this war. Youngjo wasn't sure if he could use his skills to slay the innocent especially when his father had friends who were Laguz and Branded who had fled to Hwail for safety reasons. He wanted to prove to his father that his skills something to be proud of but he also knows that those who are percieved as the enemy have done nothing wrong which just leaves him in a conflicted state once more. Family or Morals? Would he really disappoint his father another time and make him despise him more than he does now or will he blindly obey the orders of his commanding officers and slay the innocent just to prove to his father that he wasn't a disgrace to the family?

► Seo Seungwon | Beorc | Trueblade | Fire | Seungwon had never expected one of his sons to break the family traditon of having only swordsmen in the family so it came as quite a shock to him when he saw his son practicing his skills in archery in the forest. No matter how much he scolded and forced his son to learn the art of swordsmanship, Youngjo would always go back to archery. It frustrated Seungwon that he could not control his son but he also couldn't be mad at him because out of all his sons Youngjo was the most presentable and gave their family a good reputation with how he treats his fellow citizens while his other brothers have had their fair share of mischievous acts. So his frustration leads him shunning Youngjo letting him do what he wants and practically treating him like a stranger. Youngjo learned to live with this type of treatment he had been recieving from his father but he continues to approach him to inform him about anything necessary(achievements, orders, and etc.) Youngjo wishes that he and his father could reconnect again but with his father's mindset, it seems as if his wishes would remain wishes.

 

                                                                 

► Seo Hongbin | Beorc | Swordmaster | Anima | The eldest among the three siblings and also the most responsible. Hongbin has seen how his father had outcasted Youngjo and he understands why he did so but he applauds his younger sibling for having the courage to disobey their fathers wishes and to pursue what he dreams of doing. As he is older, Youngjo has a lot of respect for Hongbin and treats him well like a younger brother should. Hongbin always tells Youngjo that he didn't need to speak so formally with him all the time but Youngjo still does it anyway out of respect. To Youngjo, Hongbin is a kind and dependable older brother who always has his back whenever he is in a ditch.

 

                                                                

► Seo Seungcheol | Beorc | Myrmidon | Thunder | Youngjo's 'twin' brother who is known for being a troublemaker in their village sometimes causes trouble for Youngjo since the townsfolk sometimes mistake him for his brother. Seungcheol is also supportive of his brothers decision to follow his own path. He would have done the same but is too afraid of what his father might do after finding out that another one of his sons has strayed from tradition. Though quite mischievous, he and Youngjo get along well and are closer than him and Hongbin. Youngjo acts as the older of both of them because he helps resolve the problems Seungcheol has whether he caused them or not which Seungcheol would always be grateful for. Sometimes he'd ask Youngjo to do his chores for him but Youngjo would remind him that they all have responsibility in the house and that they should play their part.

 

                                                                    

► Ran Euikyeol | Beorc | Vanguard | Anima | Youngjo always makes sure to make himself presentable whenever he is in the presence of the prince. Though he doesn't know the prince personally, he treats him with outmost respect and is always on full alert whenever he is assisting him in any way. Euikyeol has no problems with Youngjo whatsoever and treats him kindly as well. He is however curious as to why Youngjo had strayed from his family's tradition but doesn't bring it up since it isn't any of his business anyway.

 

                                                               
► Kim Jisoo | Beorc | Wind Mage | Wind | Jisoo is from a noble family and is the only daughter of the Kim's. She is adored by many for her beauty which meant that she had a lot of suitors. Her not-so-lady like personality and quirky antics are a turn off to some but what really sets the bar is her father only allowing her to be paired up to other nobles. This ball of sunshine met Youngjo once during a formal gathering/party with noble families and he had left a good impression on her. Jisoo's father, fearing that his daughter would not be able to find someone, talks to Seungwon, Youngjo's father, and asks him if he was willing to set up one of his sons with his daughter. Her father had been pairing her up with other nobles but they didn't last long. Seungwon agreed because it would be good for both the families image. So Jisoo and her father went to their household the following day, Jisoo knowing full well why she was there. Seungwon called his sons Hongbin and Seungcheol but not Youngjo who was just by the side of the house practicing his archery. The only problem was that both Youngjo's brothers were already seeing someone but they didn't reveal it fearing that their father would scold them. Instead they proposed that Jisoo be paired up with Youngjo. Their father wasn't quite on board with the idea but when Jisoo agreed he couldn't say anything about it. With both sides not having any objections, the two were paired with each other. Youngjo and Jisoo are still to discover more about each other and learn more about each other's past. Youngjo didn't really like the idea of an arranged marriage and if he had the choice to say 'no' he would but since he knows it would please his father somehow since it helps them have a good image with two noble families that are well-known for something getting together he just had to agree to it. He does his best to make this relationship work. He at first he doesn't really feel anything towards Jisoo since they are just starting out and getting to know each other but as time goes by and he gets to know her more and how different she is from all the other noble daughters, that is when he starts to notice his quickened heartbeat at the mere sight of her. Jisoo on the other hand entered this relationship knowing who she was going to be paired with. She was sick and tired of all the other noble sons her father had paired her up with since most of them were just out for her looks but when she showed them her personality it was a turn off for them. Youngjo had left a good impression on Jisoo which is why when his brothers suggested that she be paired with him, she did not oppose to the idea knowing full well how he treats others. Her thoughts on an arranged marriage and not being free to love who she pleases are clear and she dislikes it very much but she is willing to make this relationship work with Youngjo as her partner because he is very much different from all the other guys she has been with. Things do get a little hectic when Jisoo ponders over the thought that maybe he is just doing this to please his father.

► Chae Soojung | Beorc | Light Priestess | Ice | Youngjo and Soojung are close friends and very much relate to one another on a level most people don't due to both of them having "father-issues". They would get protective of one another when it comes to the point where the other is experiencing trouble. What Younjo notices most other than her kind and caring personality is her fondness for Prince Euikyeol. He sometimes gets confused when she calls Prince Euikyeol "My Prince" and often tries to correct her saying that it's "Our Prince". They are two people who would sit down and drink tea together while chatting away on whatever topic comes to mind.

He must have a reason for this sudden decree but what? It is truly difficult to follow a leader who leaves everyone in the dark."
