personality —
Bare minimum of effort is enough effort, his face will do the rest. that is Maurits' motto. He's well-known for being something of a slacker, if he gets the dance then that's fine, if he doesn't make mistakes anymore it's good enough, nevermind he's wooden as hell. Maurits has never been the type to strive for perfect, as long as it's a pass it's good, right? He doesn't need perfection to be confident and sure, or at least to trick himself into being confident and sure, but we'll get there don't you worry.

He's very deadpan and sarcastic in his humour, a present from the Netherlands where he grew up. Have fun getting any kind of straight answer from him."Hyung what took you so long?" "Well I was trying to see if any of the local coffee shops had some weed but all they could sell me is coffee." "Hyung, what do you think of doing Boy in Luv for the evaluation?" "Well I was going to suggest Norazo's  Cider but I guess we can go with yours."

Were Maurits not aggressive aro/ace, he would be a total boy. This kid is vain to the max, he's always taking care of his appearance and making sure that he looks his absolute best. He loves looking good, and he loves people thinking he looks good. He's very confident in his looks, after all he spends a lot of time in the morning making sure they're top notch, there is no way in hell he's ever leaving the door without his dark circles covered and his hair perfectly in model. His appearance is the only thing he seems to have any sense of shame for, any kind of personal image? Out the window. Need someone to be ridiculous? Maurits is your guy, and he'll look hot doing it. Dress him in drag and send him down a runway? He'll look hot blowing kisses and flipping his hair. Need him to play up his confidence? There he is turning on Careless Whisper and ripping his shirt open while rolling over the floor and he'll look hot doing it. You could put clown makeup on it and, well, he'd feel hot? 

While he is super vain and confident in his looks, he's pretty insecure about his actual skills. He got scouted because he's handsome, this is no secret and he's honest with himself and the rest of the world about it, but he also had like zero performing experience before this and while he's been mid-key working on it (when he gets his in gear), he know he's one of the least skilled of the bunch but he also knows skills aren't always the important thing here, or so he reminds himself anyway. He's terrified to put himself out there and actually try in case he still falls short. It's so much easier to just not care so it doesn't hurt him when he underperforms, you know? Keep shouting off the rooftops how he's beautiful, worked for Seokjin didn't it?

What might surprise you is that Maurits is surprisingly warm and caring to the underdogs. The big guys he doesn't give a about, they tend to have enough arrogance to help themselves, whatever dudes. The weak ones tug at his heart strings though, the more pathetic the better. If you're down in the dumps he'll help you... however effective his dumb jokes might be. Really though, he can be a pretty effective personal trainer if he's motivated. "YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!" he yells super embarrassingly from the wings. "THAT'S MY SON!!!!" I guess you can say that if he gets invested in a pathetic one he turns into a right soccer mom.

funfacts —

- Probably has more beauty products than your average female trainee. One of the best things about this Korea adventure has been finding out about Korean skincare, this is the bomb!

- Needs his caffeine before doing anything at all in the morning. Coffee first, everything else later.

- Korea loves Dutch people and Maurits found out very early whenever he mentioned people always start talking about Guus Hiddink.

- He likes his alcohol... quite a bit. Look Maurits is a party boy let's not try to cover that up. He might not be super great at synchronized dance but man you should see him on a dance floor with a couple of shots of soju in him.

background — 

Maurits grew up in Netherlands to a Korean dad and a Dutch mom. He was always doted on for being a handsome boy but... not really good at anything else. Football? He's the kid who always had to be goalie cause he was awful at anything else ("NOT THE FACE!!!" adolescent Maurits already knew where his talents were at), he'd tried skating but he fell on his most of the time, he tried piano but he's incapable of moving his hands separately ("WITCH CRAFT"), he tried ballet even but nope that wasn't going to happen, and let's not even talk about his school record. He barely passed most of the time and even had to repeat a year. In all definitions Maurits brought dishonour to his famiry, especially compared to a younger sister who excelled at everything. Maurits didn't mind, he learned early on to become an underachiever cause he was never going to be able to overachieve anyhow, and his sister was cool and he'd listen to her play La Campanella while complaining about their parents so it was all good.

So that was his childhood, until his dad had had enough. Maurits was too Western, he said. He didn't even know Korean! he said. He's a disappointment who can't get a higher mark than a 6!!! he said. This could not go on, Maurits had to be fixed.  His dad knew just the solution: let's send him to live with his grandparents in Korea, that'll straighten him out for sure.

Yeah. So. Eeeeh. He was 18 and supposed to be attending some language classes over summer to stop being a Disappointment and learn his mother tongue already but instead he mostly went to party in Seoul. One day he's chilling in the city slacking his duties and some dude comes up to him and asks him if he wants to audition for some entertainment company. Maurits shrugs, sure why not. What's the harm, right? So he goes to this entertainment company, walks right past the nervous looking guys in the impossibly spikey clothes that one or two girls is screaming at, and goes up to some room where he sings a western song pretty badly and, well, before he knows it there's a contract in front of him and Maurits doesn't think much of it, he just signs it. More fun than language classes, right?

Joke's on him, so many language classes followed.


trainee life at bighit — 

Maurits has been training for 5 years, not that it's done him much good. He got passable at dance, that's something! Right? He gets along very well with the staff he can charm to hell and back, pretty face and pretty words and a cheerful additude go a long way, and aside from the dance and vocal trainers nobody really minds much that he's not so musically inclined, he's handsome and charismatic and that's what matters, right? His fellow trainees probably don't like him so much, especially not the ones he had to do evaluations with. Besides, he doesn't generally like people who are super arrogant about their skills (hey, he knows he looks super hot but that's not gonna make him look down on the cute ducklings you feel?). If you're a jerk about it then he's gonna be a jerk to you. 

My feelings are the most sincere. 

opinion on the bighit boys — Maurits really hates the arrogant ones who think they're better than everyone. Are they better than him? Yeah probably. But they don't have to be to everyone else too ya know? He's cool with the others who are here to chill (and slack) with them, and likes the loud mischievous ones to have fun with, and his heart goes out to the pathetic ones.

opinion on the freelancers — Not super into this coming from nowhere claiming spots the actual Big Hit trainees have been working for years towards thing. The annoyance is not for himself, he tells himself, it's for all the guys here that have worked so hard for this. It's really unfair! 

interview time ! 

"hey, please introduce yourself."  

▪ Maurits smiles his most handsome smile, making a V under his chin. "Hellooo, I'm Dutch Prince Maurits Han, here for your eyes to feast upon. A snack, if you will (; "

"what made you want to become an idol and why did you sign under bighit?"  

▪ "Weeelllll, I was scouted on the street and didn't have anything better to do?" he laughs. "You could probably say it's fate!"
 

"do you think that you'd have the same chances as with bighit if you were signed under another company?"  

▪ To be honest, he'd had no idea what entertainment companies even did when he'd first gotten scouted. He still wasn't suuuper knowledgeable of this sort of thing, but best not to say. "Of course not! Big Hit is the very best. Where else have they got some great guys like V, Suga, J-Hope, Jungkook, Jimin," he glanced at the smudged writing on his arm. "Genie and Rap Storm."
 

"what would you say is your biggest strength and your biggest weakness?"  

▪ He looks intensely into the camera, blinks his eyes coyly, and winks with a handsome smile. "Must I even say it? Truly?"
 

"how far would you go to succeed in the show?"  

▪ "As far as caffeine gets me. If the coffee is out then I'm out."
 

"what do you have that makes you a standout from all the other bighit trainees?"  

▪ "Helloooo." He points at his face with gusto. "Do we really have to go over this again?"

▪ "If you have any loyalty for Guus Hiddink you'll vote for me."

For real though, he's got a pleasant voice on him if he'd just actually take an effort and dare to care, but as long as he doesn't knobody's really gonna know it.
