Sato Erika was born in Chiba, Japan on 14 February 1993 to a widowed mother. Her mother offered guitar lessons in their home and thus Erika too learnt to play the guitar when she was 5 years old. She quickly fell in love with singing while playing the guitar. Her neighbour worked in a supermarket and snuck milk home for little Erika, and she quickly grew taller than most children her age.
Unfortunately, this earned her bullying in elementary and middle school as she was taller than many of the girls and even boys. When she was 14, she wrote a song detailing the bullying she suffered and her feelings, recorded a video of herself singing while playing the guitar and uploaded it to Youtube. She recieved many praises for her sweet voice and was offered a few kind words and encouragement to ignore her bullies too. This spurred her to produce more covers. From then on, when she got bullied in school, she just went home, recorded herself singing any song she felt like while playing her guitar and uploaded it on Youtube.
Erika's high school life was slightly better for a short while. In her first year of high school, she fell in love with a male schoolmate and they started dating, and she became pregnant after they made love in the school library. Although they were both very young, they wanted to have the baby. He got a part time job as a convenience store cashier and promised to get into a good university and get a better job in the future. Not wanting anyone to know she became pregnant, Erika dropped out of school and started offering guitar coaching like her mum.
During a routine checkup when Erika was 8 months pregnant, the baby's heartbeat was abnormally low and Erika was rushed to the OT for an emergency C-section. Although her baby girl was still alive, she was breathless as a result of the umbilical cord becoming twisted. Miraculously, the doctors managed to save her. Erika named the little girl Hana as she felt that she bloomed like a flower under tough circumstances. Life was pretty normal after that until 2012 when Erika's boyfriend had a nosebleed for seemingly no reason. A visit to the doctor revealed that he was suffering from cancer and wouldn't have long to live. During the last 2 years of his life, Erika devoted herself completely to taking care of him and making sure those two years were happy. He passed away peacefully on 25 February 2014.

Erika discovered Gfriend in January 2016 when Rough's MV came up on her autoplay list in Youtube and she was instantly captured by the soft yet upbeat melody, and she fell in love with the song when she Google translated the lyrics as she found them meaningful. So when 1theK held their Rough cover contest, Erika jumped at the opportunity to take part and made a recording of herself singing Rough while playing the guitar as her entry. This got her a lot of attention for her Youtube chanel, and Source Music scouters noted that she had composed a few original songs. Feeling that Erika's lyrics and sound were similar to Gfriend's concept, Source Music recruited Erika as a songwriter thinking she would be able to write songs for Gfriend, and trained her in the Korean language.
After Gfriend released Love Whisper, Source Music was thinking of new ideas and concepts for Gfriend and decided to have them release an album of their greatest hits in Japanese as many people had compared their songs to anime ending songs. Erika was chosen to be the lyricist for the album, which she accepted. At the end of 2017, Karen, Bohee, Miyoung and Nayoung were chosen to be part of Gfriend's sister group Starlight. In order to generate some publicity for their new group, Source Music sent the 4 girls onto Produce 99. Thinking that since Erika can sing, they sent her onto the show too and made her delete her instagram account, which she reluctantly and sadly agreed to do so despite the memories it preserved for her.
However, deleting her instagram account ended up proving to be practically useless as some of Erika's former followers had screenshots from her instagram account and posted them online. This made fans angry, as they had at first fallen in love with her sweet looks and shy personality and felt that she was a "fake" to act the way she did when she became pregnant at 16. Also, longtime fans felt that Erika being a single mum and joining the competition at her age ruined the youthful and innocent image of Produce shows.
