Personality Positive - When in a group, she doesn't feel the need to make people agree with her opinion but rather hopes to come to a mutual compromise among all members of the group. She's not one to force her ideology on others, and is accepting of most opinions and viewpoints from others. "Anyone can do what they want as long as they're not hurting themself or others." When she has a goal she wants to achieve, she gives her all to achieve it and usually even is the first to take the initiative despite it being against her character. She doesn't give up in the face of setbacks but she gives her all to achieve her goals when she knows she's doing them for a purpose.

Negative - She often doesn't see things, or people realistically, and ends up disappointing herself when she finds out they're not what she thought they would be. In "give and take", she gives much more than she takes. She tends to neglect caring for herself while caring too much for others. When she focuses all her attention onto a particular thing, she tends to lose sight of reality or responsibilities while going after it. She usually isn't willing to accept facts when they challenge her opinions or viewpoints. She secretly values others' opinion of her a lot and criticism can get her down for a while.

Neutral - She doesn't like to draw attention to herself, this is the reason why she wanted to perform in a group and not as a soloist. She has a non-confrontational nature and won't intentionally get into conflicts with others and she will take time to iron out any and all problems. It can take her quite a while to open up to others. Although she loves singing, dancing and being infront of the camera in general, she is quite reserved and shy off-camera.

Background Karen was born on 9 April 1996 to a lawyer-doctor couple. Little Karen had a very comfortable childhood but was lonely as both her parents were often busy with work, and poured all her energy into her schoolwork. She often topped the class, earning her praises from her parents and schoolmates. However, she wished she could make friends more easily, that was a challenge for her as her "cushy" background made it hard for her to relate to most people in school.

Karen discovered idols in 2009 at the age of 13. She heard SNSD's Gee at a mall and was instantly captured by the upbeat melody, even though she didn't understand the lyrics. Using the built-in SoundHound app in her phone, she managed to find out the song title and who sang it, and ended up watching all of SNSD's MVs on Youtube. When she went to secondary school, she tried to relate to others by talking about them, however most of her schoolmates were boy group stans and weren't really interested to talk about SNSD. The only girl she made friends with in secondary school was a girl called Mia. Karen and Mia loved discussing everything about SNSD and both gradually became interested in other girl groups, even learning the choreography for some songs and doing covers of them, which they uploaded to Youtube.

Trivia

— She carries a red ribbon with her at all times as it was part of the packaging for her 16th birthday present, it was her first smartphone and the most expensive present her parents bought her.

— When she was 7 years old, she wrote a song in Mandarin called "Little Firefly". It described the firefly as "flying to the sky and stars", "lighting up here and there" and "being just like a little lantern".

— She loves to sleep and consider it as one of her hobbies, seriously she'll just go to sleep if she got nothing to do

— She doesn't like fans to send her flowers as she feels they will be wasted once they wither, she prefers them to give her cards or letters.

— Her favourite Hong Kong actress is Tavia Yeung.

— She's bad at mathematics. "10+9=21"

— She has had a celebrity crush on Toda Erika ever since she watched Death Note at the age of 10.

Stage Name Kayly - she was ok with the English name her parents gave her but she wanted her stage name to be a little bit more interesting and creative. The second character in her Chinese name is pronounced "Kay" and the "LY" stands for "Loves You".

Trainee years 2014-2018

Trainee life In 2014, right after graduating from secondary school, Karen found out about a company called Moon Entertainment and that they were recruiting trainees. She asked Mia to audition with her but the latter rejected, so Karen decided to audition by herself. She sent Moon Entertainment a clip of herself dancing to Girls' Day's Hug Me Once and was accepted as a trainee.

Due to Karen's loner past and fear of being ostracised, she was afraid to open up to other trainees at first, but most of them were pretty nice. She quickly made friends with a younger Japanese girl with an adorable personality and later the eldest two members of the group who were like older siblings to her.
