THE PAST :

born in a small village by the waters, her father, chan xiong, was a fisherman like the rest of the males in that village and her mother, lin meilian, pulled off all the duties of a woman during this era. although their family wasn't rich, the simplicity and kinship made their days happy and warm. haile grew up thriving in freedom. sure her mother nagged her for being unladylike or getting along too well with the boys in the town but she didn't do much else when haile ran off, disregarding her mother's scolds. meilian had houswork to get back to so she couldn't very well chase after the middle child. besides, her parents named all their children 'ocean of happiness' so they did want their children to be happy if nothing else. that's why the parents generally allowed the kids to do as they please, as long as it was within reason and their hearts were in the right places.

everything went downhill after her father died from a fishing accident. haile was twelve at the time. with the sole breadwinner of the family now gone, meilian attempted to step up to the plate by becoming a fisherwoman. it was an unsuccessful attempt so she later decided to sell desserts in the city instead. this proved to be the more viable option at the time. haixin, being the oldest, woke up early to accompany their mother to the city while haile watched over haiyue and did the housework. haixin eventually caught the eye of one of the wealthy business men's son with her demure precense.

haixin believed it was love when he was courting her,  believed him again when he told her she could only be his concubine due to her low status but he truly loved her, and even when all his family did was belittle her family and complained she was a chicken wanting to become a pheonix.  she believed all his lies and with the urging of meilian in hopes that her daughter did not have to suffer like she did if haixin married into the wealthy, haixin was eventually betrothed and married to him. meilian was overworked to death shortly after haixin was betrothed so she couldn't make it to the day of the marriage. meilian wanted to work up some extra money to present to the in laws as a present so that they won't be hard on haixin. meilian wanted the family to know their family wasn't here for the money. with the sisters left by themselves now, haixin eventually convinced her husband to allow haiyue and haile to move into his house as well. he indeed liked her at the time so it was an easy compromise if it meant haixin's hand in marriage.

THE PRESENT :

once haixin got married when she was 16, she naturally brought her two little sisters along with her to to the city where they have now been living the past five years, or haiyue really. haile couldn't stand the side eyes, cutting remarks, and seeing her older sister's foolishness so she took to traveling by herself. she'd rather suffer alone and maintain her freedom than to be stuck in the insufferable household seeing her sister being bullied by the six other wives and parents in law. haile was selfish and she was well aware of that fact; she's always thought of running away. she only stuck by her sisters because she didn't have a strong enough incentive to leave - she was still worried for her sisters. she stuck by haixin for over a year, stepping up for her whenever the family got overbearing and helped haixin with all the chores assigned to her. although haixin was the second concubine, she was treated as the lowest. but eventually, this got too much for haile herself and she deserted her sisters, her breaking point when haixin directed all her pent up frustration at haile, saying she was the reason why the family was treating her so poorly. if haile didn't constantly step in and went against them, she wouldn't have to suffer as much. and that very night, haile was gone. she only returned to beijing recently, when she finally received the letter haiyue sent her. haiyue told haile that haixin was down sick and her family didn't see the need to care or pay for her sickness. they did minimal to care for haixin, just enough to separate themselves from being murderers. with that last straw, haiyue signed up as a dragon bride in hopes of being able to save her sister and herself from the family.

haile realized the result of her selfishness when she left her sisters behind and she would rather throw herself into a pit of fire before allowing the youngest of the sisters to sacrifice themself for the family. wanting to prevent haiyue from becoming a dragon bride, haile signed up with the full intent to win. haile didn't know much about the legends of the dragons, she just knows those who enter the forest are never seen again and she was not going to risk that with her little sister. haile was finally shouldering the responsibility as a member of the family. she needed to save the family so even if she wind up in the belly of a beast, at least her sisters can be taken care of. besides, at least she can safely say that she has lived her life, even if its little. and she knows for sure, haiyue and haixin have much more reasons to live. haixin should open her eyes to the man she married, who deserted her a few months into their marriage for another pretty face, and learn to stand on her own. haiyue should get the education she has been craving and see more of the world she wanted to see. this was what haile wanted for her sisters.

THE OCCUPATION :　currently n/a but prior to returning to beijing, she was a freelancer who did a couple random jobs for a day to earn money and rations to travel

now known as zhou's 2nd concubine by the general public, haixin and haile hasn't spoke ever since haixin blamed everything on haile three years ago. when she found out about haile becoming the dragon bride, haixin had wanted to apologize for what she said, especially since she didn't mean her words but never got the chance to actually to say it to haile. she was usually too weak to speak when haile was around and by the time she got a bit better, haile was already gone. before then, the sisters fought constantly as well, haile constantly trying to get haixin to abandon the zhou house and the three sisters could relocate somewhere else. and since their personalities are complete opposites, the sisters tend to fight more than they talk as haixin tries to become a mother-like figure and trying to dictate haile's life. needless to say, haile doesn't react well to her nagging.

haiyue was definitely more like haile than haixin, with their common curiosity about all the things in life and their stubborn streak. haiyue learned from seeing haile's willful nature that she can be as happy the middle child if she did what she wanted.

▸ hiya everyone. i'm haile. hai for ocean and le for happiness. i'm a middle child, i have an older and younger sister.

▸ no, i'm as healthy as a cow.

How well do you take care of your physical appearance and your overall wellbeing? : 

▸ i'm pretty satisfied with how i look physically so i don't exert extra effort to look better. and if by well being, you mean doing what makes me happy, that's a big fat ten out of ten.

▸ well i know there are nine sons? and uh..... parents - the dragon king and dragon queen. yeah.

- how do the brides become immortal? like does it happen naturally once they fall in love, or there's some kind of ritual like drinking their blood or something?

- can the sons sneak out of the forest whenever they like, if they are capable of it? or is there like a magic barrier that blocks em from leaving unless allowed by the dragon king?

- also since the dragon king has all their powers, say he's angry and causes a tsunami, can the sons control it?

SCENE REQUESTS : 

▸ gongfu helps haile get over her fear of the waters. she had announced her fears rather nonchalantly but actually seeing her weak side made him feel more protective over her and realize that she was more vulnerable than she liked to admit. this was also the moment when haile starts to like gongfu.
▸ when she's trying to set a distance between them but he sees her chatting it up happily with his brother. "even if you like my brother, you're my wife. nothing's going to change this fact."
▸ gongfu overexerts himself when trying to save humans from a water disaster and haile taking care of him
▸ as a scare prank, gongfu turned into his snake form only to have haile wail like a baby and passing out from fear "you're the reason i'm terrified of snakes!"
▸ gongfu is out to save the day again and haile thought she could bathe peacefully. he's back early and walks in on her. while she's a blushing and yelling mess, telling him to gtfo, gongfu stood there amused without an ounce of motive to leave. " you know we're married right? and eventually, you're going to have my children."
▸ the dragon brothers finding out haile basically guilt tripped gongfu into blessing her into becoming a bride and one of the more brothers notes that gongfu was being weak for allowing a mere human to have that effect on him. haile arguing for gongfu when he just laughed it off. "don't be jealous of your brother just because he's not as much as an animal like you."
