My Opinion on Variety Show and its "editing" #kpopdiscourse

LETS START THIS DISCOURSE.

Where 1). unusual angle 2). random discussion 3). honest opinion happens

Okay actually... It's only about Produce 101 Season 2's editing hahah I don't really watch other mnet variety shows. The only other variety show that I watch is rupaul drag race, so don't be alarmed if I make numerous comparison with that show.

IMO "evil edit" is when an editor take a situation and spin it so that it has a negative connotation, when in reality, there might not be anything negative about the situation. Case in point: Rupaul drag race all star season 2. Phi Phi O'Hara (the postergirl of "evil editing"). Her first outwardly "shady" moment is when she "sabotaged" another contestant's final performance by saying that "if you go ahead with your original idea, I think it'll look bad. Better change it to something else." The released footage made it look like she just went to that contestant and say those shady words, when IN FACT, that contestant went to Phi Phi and asked for her opinion because she was not confident that she should go ahead with the idea that she originally has.

^evil edit. taking out some context to make people look bad.

The easiest example where we can apply this classic idea of evil editing in produce 101 is to Dongho. He's a scary looking man, and he looks like he can be intimidating and be a no nonsense guy. Yeah. From what he does throughout all the challenges, that's true? no? Okay so for example his feud with Sewoon. I mean, the editing sure made it look as if the situation is so dire and awkward (i bet irl it's not that bad), and Mnet took Dongho's frustration (because honestly it's a high stress situation I understand if he grew frustrated of the circumstances) and blow it out of proportion.

That's evil editing.

You know what's not evil editing? Hyunbin.

How do you say that it's an evil editing if that's what really happened in real life? He was a lazy bum and that's the truth. BUT (and this is what makes it so baffling to me how people can hate him so much, but I mean, antifans, am I right?) he got a REDEMPTION ARC. He WAS lazy, but he changed. HE CHANGED! For the better!
After reading about him deleting his instragram posts due to hate messages, I went into the episode thinking he would be an irredeemable prick, but no! He may start as a prick, but after he found out that someone believed in his ability (aka midas touch jonghyun), he changed.

(I guess the hate that he got is a perfect example of how people find it so difficult to understand the concept of 'people can change'. I mean, sometimes I look at people and think "man there's still another 10 billion of us here on the earth, you're better off dead", but if the problem is as measly as being lazy when practicing, I WILL GIVE PEOPLE A SECOND CHANCE. Holy .)

Second example: Haknyeon and Eunki (btw Haknyeon is overrated fight me)

Here's the number one rule of "evil editing". IF you don't give them the fuel, the resource, the ingredients to evil edit, there won't be an evil edit.

I read a twitter post that says: "To prevent mnet from evil editing the boys, they have to all hold hands, throw kisses to each other, never go to the bathroom alone, not bang the door, etc"

And it's sad, but that's the truth.

I go into variety shows knowing that what we see isn't always the truth and I believe that Haknyeon is a really nice boy in real life but the way he handled the situation given to him was indeed really bad. He might be a nice person but he's like Phi Phi, never knowing how to put themselves for TV.

I mean, variety shows are all about drama. And don't even tell me how you hate drama in variety tv and how you hate evil editing etc etc. you love it. you know you do. It's instant, prepackaged drama in a can happening to people that isn't you. What's not to love?
WIthout drama, you know what you'll get? Season 8 Rupaul dragrace (aka season 1 Rupaul bestfriend race)

The producers want good TV. Drama makes good TV. Redemption arc makes good TV. Underdog story. Overthrowing the people in the position of power. Twists. Tears. Angers. They want good TV and when you sign up to be in a variety show, I'd like to believe that you should have at least a little knowledge that your words and your actions will be taken and twisted to PROVIDE good TV.

Which leads me to the last topic: NO SCREEN TIME.

In an ideal world, all 101 trainees will have equal screen time. And you know, we do not live in an ideal world. And the producers is more concerned in creating good TV than to give everyone an equal fighting chance.

Just imagine you're an editor and you can only choose one clip out of two into this 5 minutes slot:
1. A drama between Haknyeon and Eunki because he didn't get center.
2. A team practicing peacefully.

They want good TV so ofc 1. In the grand scheme of things, human love chaos more than order I mean...  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's a small place with 101 people crammed in it. A battle of personalities. So, sadly, if you're not the loudest, the prettiest (because human are shallow and however hard we tell ourselves that we don't judge a book by its cover. we still do), not the weirdest (which is why Ahn Hyungseob's strategy of being a 4D weird alien works so well for him), not the funniest, or basically just someone that doesn't have a story to tell, you're gonna get overlooked. That's it.

Lmao it's getting so long I guess I have to stop my rant.

Just one last thing: Park Jihoon

When I said playing well for the TV, he's the best at it. Man it feels as if everything he wears, he does, he says is carefully calculated.

He's kindda creepy in a way like "WHO ARE YOU?"
I mean he kindda cracked when he slammed the door in his birthday prank but that's just because he was frustrated that the group wasn't working cohesively.

If he's in dragrace, Rupaul would've say to him "how can we love you if you don't show us your vulnerability?"

(I'm sorry... I watch dragrace too much)

I second you this. I like watching pd101 but I can say that during two hours of the show, half of the time are dramas.

I watched this show and I can't be more agree esp on the last part...
Everyone seems to like Jihoon because he's so careful in his actions and words but I'm here like... Das kinda creepy... It makes me think how much he hides and how well he does it because he seems to be already so used of being so careful.
