AFF has surely changed for the Better or not?

Do not misunderstand the title,I am not making this blogpost to bash the AFF site or to complain about it. No,this post is aiming to bring a few matters to light, which I do not find people discussing much about in forums or on other platforms.

Infact this blogpost is aimed at people to be specific.

People like us,readers and authors.

Of late I have noticed that some trolls like in any other social interaction sites have also crept into this system and have made it their goal to irritate the living daylights out of writers. Some of them post nasty stuff, some cannot understand the fine line of reality and fantasy and end up wrriting cringey stuff, which is not only embarassing to hear from a fan's point of view but also as a human in general.

Last but not the least are people who repost stuff or plagiarize without prior permission, they,no doubt, are one of the most harmful and toxic people on the net and tend to get cursed a lot(rightfully so)

However,these are some rare species.

Most of the users on AFF are sweet, kind and supporting people who love to read stories and get inspired to write. It's possibly one of the best interactions on earth. They would wait patiently so that you,the writer settle your own problems at home before you update another chapter. They anticipate new developements in the story, asks questions and on the whole get involved in the process of reading and writing.

Some authors fail to understand that.

It's been a HUGE disappointment for me to find some writers take things for granted, taking all this love and involvement of the readers with their stories for granted. They demand comments to be of a certain way, they expect upvotes, expect people to subscribe,to appreciate else they threaten to put down stories. The comment section is not customized according to your need,it's for the readers to comment whatever they feel after reading your stuff(althouh it is always expected to be positive).

They grow impatient when people comment,"update please!". Some of them grow arrogant to the point, they do not care about subscribers anymore, and that is often reflected in the quality of their story content. Some of them question their own subscribers if they are worthy enough of reading their stories or not.

That is a HUGE NO.

You do not do things that make people question their decision to follow you thereafter or not.

This is for all you newbies who wanna start off with writing on this site, please ensure that you are writing out of love for writing,FIRST AND FOREMOST.It should never be to achieve something other than skills. I started off in order to hone my writing skills as is the case of most of the other authors. It should have nothing to do with receiving comments, upvotes and appreciation.

You should try and understand that this is above all a literary site,a treasure trove; the social networking is just an added bonus. Each story created carries an immense amount of hardwork, thought and skills put into it.

Some people have already cracked onto the professional market by ACTUALLY publishing stories after starting off from this site, by simply writing fanfics.

In my opinion, there is very little difference between the wholesome idea of a fictionalized story and a fanfic. Both requires considerable imagination and skill.

So if you feel that you are growing irritated at things such as subscribers, you should take a break and think about it for once, else you should steel yourself for a long journey paved with disappointments. An author's journey is replete with literary blocks, distractions, and a whole lot of other things, but you should learn to have patience. You should learn to be loving towards WHATEVER you receive from your subscribers. They don't owe you anything, they are doing YOU a favour by reading your stuff and devoting THEIR time on your writing, subsequently appreciating your efforts and your skills. This is because there's a truckload of OTHER AWESOME authors out there, they can easily drift away to them so for once be humble.

I have read other authors stating stuff like this and it plain repulses me.

Of course this post is not intended towards authors who are TRULY harassed or are facing problems that truly hampers his/her writing progress or perhaps have found a new inspiration and want to try out something else. This is for those few people I have seen along the sidelines who seriously needs to walk head first into a brick wall to understand where there priorities lie.

It's incredibly saddening for me to see this beautiful culture of writing being denigrated by such corrupted thoughts and ideas. Please think before you do any of that stuff, your thoughts and ideas are already affecting newcomers and people who are introduced to the art of writing via this site.

You have a responsibility BOTH as a reader and as a writer,so for once cast aside your ego and work towards something good.

Ohmygod. What u said bout the author thing reminded bout this writer that I really love and support . Her fics are good and I became a fan of her. She just dissapeared out of the blue and i was devastated. She sent a msg via her friendsaying that she's dissapointed about the comments. She hated when readers just say "story is cute" cause she thought that she wrote the fic with all the effort and that's all what were going to say. She doesnt like it when readers criticize her fic or suggest things. But when we don't comment she's saying that we dont like it. She has this rules b4 we read her fics and we followed it (I did!). I really don't knw what she wants frm her readers. ㅠ_ㅠ I dont knw if u knw her, she's kinda known in the fic world. Especially to xiuhan shippers.

She's hard to please and thinks too highly if herself just because all of her fics got featured. And what u said really hit home. I hope writers don't act like that. (。•́︿•̀。)

omg i totally feel this tho, and i want to go more into detail about the 'update soon' comments.

in every language there are things called commands. 'come here' is called a command 'listen' is a command, and so is 'update soon' so for an author to take it as something rude is totally normal, because in language it is categorized as a command, like they demand the author to write. what people should do is be humble in their command. something like 'i can't wait for your next update,' or 'i'm so excited for your next update' to show they have interest and now just a hurry tf up attitude. also it can be rude because authors have lives. i don't know how many blogs i've posted abt my life, abt how i want to finish stories and that is my goal, and they're public blogs, but people still comment asking why i've abandoned a story, and it's like no, i have not, go do some research before u assume i've abandoned something. so instead of commented why did u abandon this, it would be a comment of im still waiting for this, im still so excited for this, can't wait until you update this or something along those lines.

it's all about how something is said, and update soon is a command and not an actual comment, so seeing an author get snarky or ignore those or get discouraged by those is totally norma in my opinion because ppl say it without realizing what that actually is

While i fully understand where youre coming from and i agree with some of it, i really think its just as important to acknowledge where this desire come from - it comes from readers taking the writing for granted as well. This is supposed to be a symbiosis and we should all give and take. What drives some authors (also newbie authors) mad is only giving and never getting.
Writing should be for pleasure - but publishing is for the readers, not the authors. Its for making a contribution to a fandom we love - and nothing else. And it is okay to require something else that isnt "update soon". There are comments that makes authors question if the commenter even read the story because the questions are easily found in the story.
So while i agree with you that there are some authors who need to figure out why they want to write to begin with - if theyre doing it for the shot of internet fame or if theyre doing it for the passion, the reason it has come to this is because the symbiosis between reader and author have been pushed askew.

As a rookie author (and I believe there's a lot of things that I should improve), although I thirst for genuine comments on my stories, but I don't think we should ignore those who leave comment such as "update soon". They possibly read our story, but have no idea what to write so they decided to leave it like that so the author knows that they are still supporting the author's effort. I always believe that, and I'll try my best to reply each of them kindly. I am a reader too, so I know better how do you feel when the author replies to your message. It's really refreshing. And so far, I never comment something not-so-nice except to PrincessVivi, but she replied to me with kind words & I am very thankful for being able to communicate with a great author like her. I also met many nice authors here, and most of them might not be able to reply to every single comment they get (cuz they get hundreds per day), but still they show their gratitude to the readers in author's note. I do love this kind of interaction. I met a lot of amazing people here and some of them are very talented in writing. They are my inspirations, and the fellow readers who subscribe and comment on my stories are my vitamins for me to keep on writing. AFF is indeed a good platform to people like us to share our love for words. So I hope there won't be such thing like bashing & arguement. Let's have a peace world here. Please.

However, on the other hand, I can understand these problems as an author myself. Without authors, there'll be no readers, and vice versa exactly. Although personally myself, since the commenters' count is sometimes too much to reply to, I'd at least pick out those who had questions/regular commenters that I always see and answer them or solve any questions they might have. But really my readers are so precious to me that I have to make sure they know that I love them all, truly.

But of course, there's always two sides on the story. Some authors find comments petty, others embrace them, and sometimes they don't care. And as authors, whom the majority of the time put our sweat and blood in the words of our fic, wouldn't it be reasonable if we don't get the 'attention' we personally think we deserve? And most of the time, mind, the authors pretty much decides what goes on to the story., and not the readers (unless, of course, the author specifically asked for reader input). The purpose of readers is to cheer us for it and encourage us, and even clicking that subscriber button won't take a second off your lifetime span. Leaving comments are even better (personally I like those nice, long comments, since they make me feel so warm ahahaha but that's enough on me).

So I suppose the problem to address is not only ungrateful authors, but also ungrateful readers, too. Both sides often cause problems and sparks controversy, and someone or both ends up upset. Author-reader is a two-way relationship and the most important thing to get across is that if the author's good, if the author loves their readers, what more reason could prevent the readers from showing the same amount of appreciation? Sometimes it baffles me that I'd have to address these certain topics, but here we are, y'know :-d

As someone who's more frequently on the side or writing than being an actual reader, I completely agree with this. Sometimes I find it a little confusing when the readers comment anything on "please update soon/next chapter please!" and the author goes all huffy and say it frustrates them. Whilst yes, even I might have petty cases as such (where they are ACTUALLY demanding and is... sort of rude to be honest), but shouldn't authors take these comments as an encouragement instead? I mean, personally, if someone comments "please update soon!" I take that as a boost and an encouragement and that they're so excited about my story.

To be honest, "popular authors" (in quotation marks because I know some popular authors are super sweet) seemingly just take things for granted nowadays. And suddenly if they don't have the subscriber number they want, they take their anger on existing readers (which is... weird?). They blame them instead of looking at their story and thinking "maybe this isn't a popular genre/I haven't done well enough on the writing/maybe the plot is boring?". Subsequently of course, this leads to lashing out in anger by threatening to vanish from the site itself or deleting the story, which in essence "guilt trips" the existing readers. Oh, and also lack of appreciation for the readers. What's wrong to just take even 1 (one) sentence in the bottom of the chapter to say thanks to the readers? Surely that's not a big thing to do?

I used to get lots of comments on my stories and I would reply to every one. We would end up having on going discussions sometimes and it was great fun. Now, for some reason, I'm lucky to get 1 comment on a story and I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I feel pathetic like I have to beg for comments just to have some idea whether people like what I'm doing or not and I lose my enthusiasm when people seem to be so uninterested or invested in the story. I just want things to go back to how they ewre when I could write and be excited about sharing it and it would help me bond with other people and I knew I was making them happy in some way.
I hate that some authors scare people into not commenting, don't reply and act like they're better than their readers. They should appreciate what they have if people are taking their time to comment for them.

YESSSS oh my god i second this!!!! i'm not sure what's going on w/ the social networking, but i see so many authors nowadays who're so rude and like, take their readers for granted. man i've seen so many authors act so entitled and rude and uGH it just disgusts me. i remember being in the position of a reader a few years ago, and certain popular authors would act like they were better than me and either ignore me/be suuuuper mean if i pointed out something/asked a question/said something that criticized their characters in even the slightest. fast forward to now and (i don't want to boost LMAO) but i'm doing a lot better than those authors. what i've found is that the authors who are truly genuine and kind & really care about their readers end up outshining others. like, even if they may not have the largest amount of subscribers, they're loved by their readers & the community.
