⟪ PERSONALITY ⟫

Miyoung has a certain kind of grace to her, a sweetness that draws people to her. She values kindness and hard work above mostly everything else, and therefore in her life tries to be hardworking and kind. Therefore, she's never one to pick a fight and tries very hard not to step on anyone's toes, to the point where sometimes it seems like she'll agree with anyone just to get along. She remains cheerful and smiling in the hope that it will compel others to smile too, in the hopes that she might brighten someone else's day. 

At the same time, however, there's a downside to that constant optimism and naivety in that sometimes she can come off as too agreeable, too nonconfrontational, and it frustrates people because often it seems like she won't stand up for herself if it means upsetting other people. In that way, she cares more about other people's happiness than her own, thinking that if other people are happy then she'll be happy too.

As it stands, Miyoung is actually internally very shy and self-critical. She's constantly searching for flaws in herself and ways to improve, to make herself better. Perhaps one of the areas where she criticizes herself the most is in singing, as she won't stop until she gets every note perfect. Miyoung doesn't want to be considered "mean" or "overlly critical" to anyone - except to herself.

With her family, Miyoung is a bubbly, dreamy, yet dutiful daughter. She tries to remain aware of her responsibilities, even if sometimes she seems like the absentminded dreamer of the family. Still, her family loves her, even if her mother sometimes worries about her naivety and willingness to believe people are truly good at heart. She gets along well with her parents, and is always respectful to her grandparents. She tries her best not to be a problem or troublesome to them, and cares very much about her filial duty.

With her friends, Miyoung tries very hard to be close to people, because she wants them to like her. She knows many people but is only really close with a few of them, mostly because in her attempts to be cheerful and have people like her, she doesn't really allow for any vulnerability that leads to true connection. Most of her friends know her as "happy happy Miyoung, always singing and smiling". She's pretty and elegant to them, neat and clean. Shining. To those who know her a little better, who have seen her in her more vulnerable moments, they agree that Miyoung is happy a lot of the time, but also she can be very anxious and nervous. They know more of her flaws, like how she wont' stand up for herself and will often agree with things she internally disagrees with so as not to make waves. Yet, at the same time, she wants to always be the friend who's there with a shoulder to cry on, to help others and be their friends, and for those who she truly, deeply loves, she will be loyal and stand up for.

At school, Miyoung did her best, but she always got average scores. She's not really that much of an academic, she hated studying but always studied with other people and tried to help them. Her highest scores were in music practicum and music theory, which is why she went to a performing arts high school. Music is one of the most important things in Miyoung's life, and she holds herself to an almost impossible standard when it comes to it.

⟪ BACKGROUND ⟫

Miyoung was born in Los Angeles, California, so she has dual American-Korean citizenship. The onyl child of an engineer and a painter, she grew up rather spoiled, loved, and doted on. Although appearance-wise she looked more like her father, in talent and personality she turned out more like her mother, in that she was more interested in the arts rather than the sciences. She started singing before she could properly talk, making noises to go along with the operas her mother played while she painted.

When Miyoung was five, her parents decided to move back to Korea for two reasons. One, her father had gotten a better job offer with a Korean industrial company, and two, her parents wanted her to connect with her heritage better and learn Korean. It was a bit of a struggle, since Miyoung spoke no Korean at the time and had grown up in California, but it was a learning experience. 

In elementary school, because her Korean wasn't that good yet, Miyoung would sometimes get teased by the other kids at school. She wouldn't understand what they called her until she went home and asked her mother, and eventually came home in tears because she couldn't even properly respond to their taunts. Her mother told her to ignore them and focus on being kind and good, and after a while they'd go away. So Miyoung tried her best to do so, and took it to heart as a new way of thinking - "If I can be kind and good enough, people will like me and want to be my friend, so I have to try my best to be kind and good always."

As she grew up and her Korean got better, the teasing stopped. She always remained close to her mother and father, and made more friends as she grew up, but never stopped trying so very hard to be "good and kind."

She also focused more on music, on learning how to sing, in choirs and on her own. She started taking voice lessons when she was eight years old, and her vocal teacher helped her develop her sweet, soft voice into something stronger.

When she was sixteen, in 2012, she and her best friend, just for fun, auditioned for the big three entertainment companies: SM, JYP, and YG. To their utter shock and surprise, Miyoung made it in to YG, and became a trainee in the spring of 2013. Her parents had their doubts about it at first, thinking that Miyoung would prefer to the Korea National University of Arts, but Miyoung realized that this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and told her parents that this was what she wanted to do. So her parents supported her decision, and she trained as a vocal talent for three years.

When Miyoung comes home to visit, her father will always make sure to cook for her and eat with her, saying very little, but letting it be evident just how fond he is of his daughter. Miyoung adores him.

When she needs to be, Youngjae can be very motherly to the point where its almost overbearing, but Miyoung does her best to make her mother proud.

She swears like a sailor, much more than you would think a lady her age would. She doesn't take sass from nobody, but she certainly gives it. She dotes on Miyoung, but is also critical of her, and sees a lot of herself in the young woman. Miyoung in turn is always respectful to her granny, though she finds it hard to keep a straight face around her, especially when granny starts swearing. 
→ Grandfather, Kim Sungho ⋮ 80 ⋮ musician (retired) ⋮ quiet, pensive, artistic, sleepy ⋮ Her mother's father, Miyoung's grandfather sleeps a lot of the time, but when he's awake he's usually hungry. He doesn't really talk all that much, but he smiles a lot at Miyoung, and is always patting her head or gesturing for her to eat. Miyoung pays him the utmost respect. The few times he talks is usually with Song Sookja, because the two grandparents love to bicker with each other.

They've had Yun-Yun since he was a puppy, and Miyoung adores him. He's devoted to her as well, and won't leave her side whenever she comes home. They're not really sure what breed he is, but he's enormous, could probably knock over small children with his tail, and very excitable. He also smiles a lot, which is remarkable for a dog.

→ Best friend, Gwon Yunhee ⋮ 20 ⋮ coffee barista at a cafe in Seoul ⋮ artistic, excitable, motherly ⋮ Yunhee and Miyoung have been best friends since they met in middle school, and Yunhee was the friend that Miyoung went to the auditions with. They have a lot in common, such as favorite bands, favorite foods, and the fact that both were in choir in high school. Yunhee is loyal to a fault, and often worries about Miyoung due to Miyoung's naivety and seeming lack of self-preservation. They're still very close, however, and text each other nearly every day.

He's always making fun of Miyoung, albeit jokingly, and he's one of the few people that Miyoung feels comfortable being anything other than nice to. Their banter is something to witness. He adores Yunhee, though, and sometimes Miyoung can feel like a third wheel when the three of them hang out. Miyoung thinks that her two friends' relationship is something to aspire to.
→ Friend, Lee Subin ⋮ 18 ⋮ high school student ⋮ sassy, loud, abrasive, unafraid of speaking her mind ⋮ Subin was Miyoung's younger friend in high school. Initially, when Subin first entered high school and met Miyoung, when their relationship was strictly seonbae-hoobae, Subin despised Miyoung, thinking that her constant kindness was super fakea nd insincere. Similarly, Subin's abrasive and loud personality slightly scared Miyoung, and she avoided the younger girl. However, as time went on, Subin grew to appreciate how hard Miyoung tried to genuinely care for people, and they slowly warmed up to each other. Subin now considers herself Miyoung's number one fan, always looking out for her and always telling her to "Think of yourself first for once, eonnie!". Subin encourages her to be selfish and unapologetic, which Miyoung sort of needs.

⟪ OTHERS ⟫

→ Group member, Kim Seojung ⋮ 22 ⋮ PKBS natural leader and main vocalist ⋮ kind, smart, polite, dreamy, depressed ⋮ Miyoung looks up a lot to Seojung, simply because she's older and has trained longer. She admires Seojung's background in musical theatre, and tries her best to make Seojung smile if she's feeling down. While they're not terribly close, Miyoung wants to be someone Seojung can rely on, and does her best in PKBS so as not to be a burden to the leader once they debut.
→ Acting seonbae and labelmate, Lee Jongsuk ⋮ 27 ⋮ actor and model ⋮ encouraging, mature, good-natured ⋮ Miyoung is a huge fan of dramas, and so she's a huge fan of Lee Jongsuk and honestly can't believe that they're signed to the same label or that he knows her name. She watched Pinnochio and W - Two Worlds avidly, and when she finally got an opportunity to meet Lee Jongsuk through a YG function, she let him know what an enormous fan she is. In return, Jongsuk seemed to be amused by her enthusiasm, and since then has viewed Miyoung as something akin to a little sister, wishing her luck in her debut and stating that he hopes to see her act on TV someday too.
→ Vocal seonbae and former labelmate, Gong Minji (Minzy)⋮ 21 ⋮ idol and singer, formerly the main dancer of 2NE1⋮ warm, cute, knowledgable, hard-working ⋮ Miyoung knew Minzy when she was still at YG and Miyoung herself was just a trainee. Miyoung considered Minzy to be possibly the best vocalist of 2NE1, and when she met her for the first one asked her for tips in developing her voice. She especially admired Minzy's mature, yet light tone. Minzy similarly encouraged the younger girl and gave her tips not only on her singing, but her dancing as well, up until she left YG.
→ Rival, sort of, Park Bom ⋮ 32 ⋮ main vocalist of 2NE1 ⋮ bubbly, kind of ditzy, yet still sweet ⋮ It's not so much that Miyoung dislikes Park Bom, she just doesn't think too much of her vocal technique. For someone who's a main vocalist, Miyoung thinks that Bom should work harder on her technique. It makes Miyoung herself practice harder to perfect her own skills, wanting to become a main vocalist when she debuts, so as not to be seen as weak of a vocalist as Bom. Nonetheless, she never treats Bom with anything but respect, even if she doesn't necessarily feel that way inside. (Park Bom does show consistent problems with her breath support and disconnected lines, I hate to say it...her singing was actually better when she was a trainee than she is now)
→ Sajangnim, Yang Hyunsuk ⋮ 47 ⋮ CEO of YG Entertainment ⋮ strict ⋮ Miyoung is slightly intimidated by the CEO, but he's noted that she's a hard worker and has trained her voice rather well, which is why she's slated for debut. He seems to know that she's a little afraid of him, and likes to sometimes heighten that fear by acting particularly strict towards her for fun. She's only recently figured out that he doesn't really mean it and is just trying to get a reaction out of her, like an uncle would.

Miyoung participated in several singing competitions in high school, prior to entering YG. Often, judges would remark on her "soft, pretty tone" with several "vibrant moments". She was often praised for her crisp diction and clear tone. Her drawbacks were that she often had jaw tension that hampered her ability to get truly forward, ringing placement, and her dynamics needed a lot of improvement. Nevertheless, she continued to work hard, singing being one of the most important things in her life.

Once she was in YG, she continued to develop her vocal ability, instilling good habits and working on what she needed to fix. Debut was the dream. She experienced a little bit of difficulty with the dancing, as she wasn't a naturally graceful person, and often resented the amount of time she'd have to spend to get the moves right when she could have been working on her vocals. But she never complained, instead spending hours to get the dances right and being proud when she slowly but surely improved.

Because of her non-aggressive nature, she really didn't make any enemies as a trainee. She only got a little bit of resentment once it was announced that she was going to debut with PKBS. 

Even though Miyoung was primarily a vocal talent and focused on music, her visuals were also used for some of YG's promotions. She has modeled in some of YG's subsidary companies, such as moonshot and NONA9ON.

⟪ RELATIONSHIP ⟫

As stated before, Miyoung is a huge fan of groups such as EXO and BTS. She's been a fan of EXO since their debut, and it just so happens that Chen is her bias.

Her admiration for him, however, is incredibly layered. On one level, she is constantly impressed with his vocal ability. His vocal technique is arguably the best developed in EXO, and his voice is absolutely gorgeous, and it only gets better with time. She finds herself falling for him on that level, in realizing that he not only possesses that much talent but he is constantly working hard to improve, and it shows. Hard work is an important thing to Miyoung, and knowing that he works just as hard on his voice as she does inspires Miyoung and makes her admire him more. In that way, he really is a role model and idol to him - he inspires her to try her best to be just as good a vocalist as he is, and dreams of maybe someday singing on the same stage as him. 

On another level, she admires his personality as well, onstage and offstage. It hasn't escaped her notice that he is incredibly handsome and has a very good stage presence. However, being an EXO-L, she's also observed him in offstage promotions, such as variety shows (such as EXO's Showtime), and she's found herself drawn to his personality, time after time.

You see, Miyoung values kindness and hard work above everything. Realizing that Jongdae works hard (honestly, the two of them probably consider singing to be the most important thing in their lives) makes him attractive to her as a seonbae, as a role model. But it's his seemingly kind and gentle nature that really tugs on Miyoung's heart.

Jongdae's known as being "so kind, it's like he's a fool", and that also inspires Miyoung to try her hardest to be kind as well. She thinks he's honestly a genuinely good person, and he inspires her to also try her hardest to be a good person. It gives her hope, especially when things are tough and she feels like she might despair at the world. It's the thought of, "because I know that someone like him exists, I feel like maybe the world is not so bad after all."

However, it should be noted that this is still a fan loving her idol. She has no idea what he's actually like in real life - she doesn't know him. And Miyoung is aware of that. She can imagine what he might be like, she can daydream scenarios of romance, but in the end there's always the worrying fear that maybe she might be building him up in her head too much, the reminder that he's also a human being who can make mistakes and be hurtful and maybe even sometimes mean, and a part of her is afraid of having that image, that hope disappear if she meets him and he's not what she expects.

That doesn't mean she doesn't want to meet him though. She does, incredibly so. Even if he's not as perfect as she thinks he is, she wants to meet him. She wants to know him. She wants to be able to call him Jongdae and see him when he's angry or when he's sad, wants to know the human behind the idol as much as she fears knowing him. 

⟪ HISTORY ⟫

They have only met once, and that was at a fanmeet in Seoul at the beginning of 2015, promoting the newest album, EXODUS. Miyoung had a day off from training and went with Yunhee to meet EXO, and she was excited beyond belief.

It was a cold morning. The crowd was enormous. The line took forever. But she didn't mind waiting.

She managed to get her album signed by four of the EXO members before she reached him - smiles, nodding, polite conversation. The members before him, Suho, Chanyeol, Baekhyun, and Lay, all smiled at her, signed "to Miyoung-ah", wished her luck in her studies.

And then she reached him. Chen. Kim Jongdae. 

And she completely froze up.

Luckily, Yunhee was right behind her, and prodded her forward. Luckily, Miyoung had predicted this, and when her vocal chords suddenly closed up for the first time in her life, she was prepared.

She reached into her bag and pulled out a spiral notebook, flipping it to a page. Written out on it in big black lettering was a message, and she held the notebook in front of her face, looking at the ground to avoid eye contact. It was suddenly hard to breathe - her heart was pounding.

Jongdae studied it for a few moments, but she couldn't see his expression as he read it. She knew what it said - she had painstakingly traced out the words the night before.

"To EXO's Chen, Kim Jongdae-ssi,

Thank you so much for your hard work. Your voice is so beautiful. You are very beautiful. I am very happy when I hear you sing, and it inspires me to work harder to be a better singer myself. 

This world can sometimes be really cruel and cold, but people like you can make it warm and bright. I am very happy that you exist. Please continue singing no matter what, please smile and be happy and healthy in the future! I hope you have many reasons to smile, as many as the times you have made me smile.

Sincerely, a fan."

A few moments passed. Then, she heard a gentle and deep voice say, "Thank you for your support. But I'm a little sad I can't see your eyes and tell you this. Would you let me see your face?"

So slowly, she lowered the notebook, and taking a deep breath, met his eyes. 

He was smiling, so widely his eyes were like crescent moons, and he said kindly, "Ah, your eyes are really pretty! I'm glad to have met you! Please keep singing in the future as well. I would like to hear you someday, maybe."

She quickly looked away, not quite sure if he could hear her heart beating so furiously. He signed her album, "Chen-Chen :3 please smile in the future!" and the line moved on. She never told him she was a trainee with YG, that she hoped one day to truly be able to sing onstage and be noticed by him.

It didn't really hit her until she got home, what had just happened. She cried, then.

⟪ STATUS ⟫ Right now, all they are is an idol and his fan. Jongdae probably doesn't even remember her - however, if Miyoung debuts with PKBS, she secretly hopes to meet him again, perhaps as seonbae-hoobae.
