An Honest Question

Do you realise when your main melody/harmonies are off or is your brain just physically (or cognitively) unable to do so?

also known as:

Collabing discourse

Back in the day I always volunteer to do the harmonies for all the collabs I was in. High low highhigh lowlow doubles bgvs everything, you name it.

BUT NOOOOT ANYMORE.

Unless i'm the mixer of the collab, I will never do a full set of harmonies. Maybe only high, or only low. Unless i was personally asked by the host, I will never do a full harmony set for a collab.

Because why bother.

My hard work gets inexplicably tainted when:

1. It was put on top of off-tune main parts. which makes everything sounds off, including my otherwise innocent harmonies.

2. It's used by very mindful mixers who don't bother to exercise some common sense and not dump everyone's parts together regardless of whether they're on pitch or not.
As a mixer, you have the freedom to edit. EDIT. Use that advantage and maybe, probably, if someone's harmonies are off, or flat,  or just plain wrong, don't include it in the final mix!
Be ruthless and cut off people's messy harmonies. Just delete the layer. Poof. Gone. Easy. Your need to please everyone will never help you in producing a good collab.

I'm so pissed if I've done my fair share of harmonies (which are most of the time correct, thankyou very much. If you want proof, well there's many and you should know better than to clock me.) and when I listen to the end result, it got butchered because the mixer decided to put someone else's off harmonies on top of mine.

Yay.

And that's why I'm asking,

Can you hear them? Or do you really think those off notes are not off?

I'm curious.

ps: yes this confirms that if there are off harmonies in collabs that I mix,
I cut them.

Most of the time.

If i couldn't be bothered to do so i will just leave them be.
Most of the time i couldn't be bothered so,
it.

Isn't this why you always send in a 'all' or 'alls' ??? The mixer can hear as to how you intended your harmonies.
I am, too, trigged when people mix my harms wrongfully. Ugh... *sadness*

I think a lot of people can hear it and will try to imitate it but can't exactyl get it right so just do anyways or their mind just simply can not comprehend it. I do notice that you harmonies are so on point all of they time thought!!^^

I have to say I also do cut out some peoples harmonies when they are not in tune or trying to make it very quite so that it's there but not ruining the main part.

I can TOTALLY TELL whether someone isn't in tune in split second (which makes it fking difficult for me to record my my own solo covers because I keep going off tune by like a few hertz and everything will sound like SHET and now I've totally trained myself to be able to sing in the original key when I pitched the instrumental to another distant key because I cannot record if the instrumental is in the right key for some reason?)
which probably also explains why I stopped like bulk listening to collabs. I used to listen to EVERYTHING I see on Soundcloud but now I only listen to those which are either the ones I'm in or the songs that I personally enjoy listening to in general.

But seriously why collab mixers why

Bless this post. If i know i can't do a harmony. I won't. Its a waste of time, and it hurts the mixers ears. Some time I don't realise until i hand it in, but usually when i know its a chorus with others and i am aware hell, no

I think some people think they have to hand it in because it said it has a harmony. But if there are like 3 more people and you know you can't do it dont.

Thanks for thus this post, it's like Jesus take the wheel. XD

Tbh I'm not a mixer (yet) but i feel your pain.
