[QUESTION] What Do You Deem Short & Long, Story Length Wise?

Ok, so, I’m just gonna start off by saying that I am one of those rare peeps who loves, and I mean LOVES, stories with many chapters to them; the longer the better I say. Like, even when I’m out and about searching for stories to read by tags, for the most part I tend to click on the ‘chapter count’ option since I like to find stories that have the longest amount I can first, then go down from there, stopping at a certain amount. This is also why I want to be able to make all my stories as long as possibly because I think it would be nice to have long stories (but not in the sense that I would write a whole bunch of stuff in an annoyingly filler way to purposely make them long).

Now, the reason I say rare (I have no idea if this is true or not, I only say rare cause that's what it kinda feels like) but, to me it seems like quite a lot of peeps like to read stuff that isn’t too long or prefer stuff like oneshots more. Like, oneshots seem to be a big thing to me from what I witness. And really, I don’t mind oneshots or short stories (hell, I’ve even read my fair share here and there that I like) but they’re not for me as much as they are for some other people. Oneshots are fine and all, tho, they’re just like one chapter and that’s it, ya know? Sometimes when I stumble upon a story with a description that interests me, I go to check it out, but then I can kinda get a little sad once I find out that it’s just a oneshot, like, damn lol. And because of this I sometimes will just skip oneshots and stories with not that many chapters, which can kinda because I know that there are some really awesome stuff that I could be missing out on.

Anyway, I was thinking to myself of what I felt like, to me, was deemed short and long. I’d say, anything below 30 chapters, or maybe 20 at best, I would say that that is a short story to me. Then stuff that’s like 10 or less is really short. For long, I’d probably say 50+ is pretty long, then something that’s really long is 70-100+ chapters in length. Anything past that (150-200+) would be super long. But even still, like I said, I love long stories so I’d most likely totally read that still.

So, I wanted to ask all you peeps what you deem short and long depending on your preferences and stuff. Do you like stories that are shorter? Longer? Oneshots? Let me know!

Even chapters are long for my standard :P and short (not counting drabbles) will be around a 1000-2000 words oneshot.

Personally i dont like reading long stories (esp ones with chapter) (especially if each chapter is less than 2000 words) because most of the time, theres a huge chance that the writer just dont know how to go straight to the main problem and just fill everything up with pointless fillers. So there's a huge chance to get bored in the middle.
But maybe because my prefered genre to read is mystery/horror/thriller... It's hard to find a good engaging mystery fanfic that's long lool xD

Long to me is anything with 10 or more chapters. Also it can depend on the actual length of the chapters themselves. My preference really depends on the situation. if I am binge reading a bunch I want many shorter stories and oneshots, but if I am reading in bed before sleeping I want a nice long story to get lost in

Well, since I mostly write oneshots, I do have a soft spot for those. Short and sweet y'know? But when it comes to length, I'm not exactly picky. Just nothing too short (200 words) and nothing too long (50 chapters). If the story is interesting, with a good plot, unique/interesting style of writing, and consistent quality, then I don't have any problem reading longer stories (having my fav ships there helps too lmao). I guess writing long stories have their cons.. people losing interest, not having time to update, and whatnot. Sometimes the writers themselves get bored of their writing (like me) and end up disappointing their readers. It's something I hate, so as much as possible I just try to do what I'm good at, which is oneshots. But of course, people have their preferred length of writing, and as I said, if it's good, I'll read it. I hope this helps you a bit? It's only one out of many opinions but yeah ^^

20 chapters is long, omg. I would have to /really/ love a story to even consider reading 20 chapters. Though I often count words instead of chapters. 30k words is a long story for me. Anything above 30k has to be really well-written. And even if they're well-written, I'll often find myself drift away because of the length.
I much prefer oneshots. They can be everything from 500 words (drabbles mainly) to 15k words and I'll be fine. 15k will obviously take more than a 500 words drabble concerning quality (I'm not reading a bad quality 15k fic, but I can slump on the quality when it comes to shorter drabbles (although they tend to be pretty great as well). I'm awfully picky when it comes to the fics I read but I really dislike reading longer stories. They bore me really quickly (even those I like, tbh).
I mean, I started a fic at 17k words and it was absolutely amazing and then it took a shift I just kinda frowned upon but I kept reading. Now I've stopped reading. I also started a fic, read the first chapter, realized there were 41 chapters and just plain out said "no" even though the first chapter was great and I've read other of the author's fics that I liked.

I just ... nope. >_>'

(That said; I'm not very good with writing long stories either and I prefer to write oneshots and drabbles.)
