- gong kwangsu (공광수); this is not necessarily a nickname, but this is the pen name that he writes under as a world-class novelist. originally, his decision was to have his work publsihed under his actual birth name, but for some reason unknown to him, an alias simply seemed appropriate. perhaps it is that many of world history's great writers wrote under a pen name if not several pen names and that the prospect of one day being included in the list of greats invigorated him as much as the thought of it embarrasses him. the mystery of identity was also something that intrigued him very much so. when it came to the construction of the name, it was simple and plain. he chose his paternal grandmother's maiden name to be the last name and his maternal great-grandfather's name as the first name. the ones who refer to him by this particular alias are those who read his material and those who claim the title of fan, reviewer, critic, etc. they're virtually unknowing of gong kwangsu's true identity as jang yeonghwan, so this is reasonable. his publishing editor sometimes likes to call yeonghwan kwangsu as a joke as a way to humor both himself and yeonghwan. other than these instances, no one really refers to him by this particular alias.
- seonsaengnim (선생님); gong kwangsu is no formal teacher nor is he an old man, but he is well-seasoned in his craft and apparently enough so for people to refer to him in such a respectful way in reviews, critiques, and fanmail. he figured that the concealment of his personal life and general anonymity behind gong kwangsu made it hard to pinpoint his age, and most probably believe him to be an wise, old sage with a long, white beard who lives in the mountains with a typewriter, though that isn't exactly the case at all. the respectful title used to bother him initially, but he has become quite accustomed to it. in the real world of jang yeonghwan, though, the title is used less seriously and more as a joke. his publishing editor, who fits all of the qualifications for the seonsaengnim title, likes to croak it out in a stereotypical old man voice as to playfully mock yeonghwan. there is also a kid, who yeonghwan tutors in his free time, who sometimes calls him this alongside the usual hyung title. it's out of playfulness from a dongsaeng towards a hyung, but it's also out of respect from a student to his teacher.
- nogeunhwan (노곤환); from his best friend, kim hyukjae, this is a play on words in reference to yeonghwan's generally languid and relaxed behavior that he was somewhat known for in high school and up until today. the actual word is nogeunhan (노곤한), meaning languid, and the nickname was originally nogeunhan jang yeonghwan (노곤한장영환) or nogeunhan yeonghwan (노곤한영환), but it was apparent to his best friend that changing the last syllable of the word with the last syllable of yeonghwan's name was definitely a lot easier than calling him what he had been. yeonghwan is usually called this when hyukjae catches him lounging around at home, sometimes laying on the floor and staring at the celing, doing nothing all day long and when a listless expression comes upon yeonghwan's face, and he needs a little prompting to do something even when it's obvious that most activity is out of the question.
- yeongwon (영원); for a nine year period between 1953 and 1962, the south korean currency was the hwan due to the devaluation of the won at the time, though of course, we know that the won is very much in use in today's south korea. basically, this nickname is sort of a play on words concocted by "a noona who ran over to welcome me when i first moved in. she was going on about becoming friends and... using a bathtub with the jets?" none other than bae saerin. the nickname is definitely a reference to his wealth, changing the defunct currency into the current thriving one, and even though the nickname seems just a tad bit lame, yeonghwan admits that it's actually quite clever and even a little funny.

- korean; native; born and raised in south korea, the obvious language for him to be well-versed in is none other than the korean language. being from tongyeong, he grew up speaking in gyeongsang-do satoori. that said, it's the dialect that he feels most comfortable with, in terms of speaking, though he can easily switch to standard korean if need be, the main reason being that his mother was from seoul, born and raised, and often spoke to him in the standard language.
- english; semi-fluent; english is arguably one of the most important languages in the world, and it is a very common lingua franca used amongst organizations, businesses, international groups, etc. this is exactly what yeonghwan had in mind when he took it up in high school. his english is pretty good, but because he hadn't had much opportunity to truly practice it, his language skills remain at a semi-fluent level.

OCCUPATION : writer/novelist; yeonghwan had always loved all aspects of language no matter how beautiful or disgraceful. he always had a book in his hands, and while most assumed him as he type to strictly peruse high literary works and what-have-you, he quite enjoyed fiction. particularly great was his habit to question the world through psychology. these were the main catalysts for his interest to write. througout his twenty-three years of living he has written hundreds of drafts, ideas, and skeletons but has had six of these polished to core and published out to the public, his first book published when he was sixteen years old, unbeknownst by the public. by many, he is seen as a literary master on the international stage with all of his books listed on bestseller lists throughout, a particularly phenomenal feat, and has had his books translated into well over eighty languages. obviously, he is very well off. he coud swim in his money if he were actually that vain. technically, he's trying to enjoy the prospect of retirement, but he's still thinking about if that's what he truly wants.
