trainee life »  Coming to Big Hit Youna was like a fish out of the water. She didn't know anyone and she's never been very good at making friends. Even after 3 years she's still not close with many of the girls, having only a handful of girls she considers her friend, but she's known as one of the more gentle if awkward ones. Everyone knows Youna wouldn't hurt a fly, but it's still hard to get close to her or even talk to her sometimes.

She works hard to be good enough, but she just doesn't have any natural talent for dancing or singing. Every performance she puts up is a struggle to be good enough but she's not giving up now.

ELABORATION »  Youna's biggest problem in life, at least the life of her trying to become an idol, is that she's just really forgettable. Youna doesn't have a strong personality. She's nice to a fault and is always polite to her elders and obeys the conduct codes of Korea to a T. She's obedient when it comes to anyone telling her what to do and would be the perfect trainee if it weren't for the fact that she's just not memorable in any way. The only thing she's got going for her is her beauty, but without an equally captivating personality to back that up that beauty only gets her so far.

Youna's just really awkward when it comes to others she doesn't know very well or the camera. She doesn't know what to say to break the ice, doesn't know how to act, doesn't know how to look. She starts overthinking things like where should I look and what expression should I have? Folds and unfolds her arms as she's trying to figure out how she should stand and what she should be doing with her hands. She's got a mild case of social anxiety where she's just too nervous to speak up and overthinks things and doesn't know how to appear a normally functioning human being. She means well but many people are put off by thing fidgety and anxious nature.

In this way she's also very dependent on her friends. Youna is fragile and doesn't take criticism well and she needs friends to lean on and hold her up and remind her that just because she got one criticism, or just because some netizens are leaving bad comments, or one of the contestants is mean to her, doesn't mean that everyone hates her and that she's a failure. She needs help putting things in perspective. She's probably the one most affected by negative press or angry netizens which is hard considering she's often criticized for being all (plastic) looks and very little talent. Her anxiety just keeps telling her that people hate her, that if her friend hasn't talked to her in a while or got annoyed with her once that automaticaly she hates her, or that she doesn't deserve to be in this show because she made one mistake. 

On the good side of things Youna's got the patience of an angel and its almost impossible to get her angry or irritated. She also cares about everyone around her even if it can be hard for them to relate to her. Youna is always willing to help someone who's struggling and always looking out for her fellow trainees. Sometimes she doesn't realize when her helps isn't needed or wanted and tries to give it anyway, but she means well. She can be so hypocritical about this, telling soemone that it's going to be okay and there's nothing so bad you can't get out of it anymore, but when something happens to herself it feels like the end of the world to her. She's so anxious all the time and totally overreacts, often thinking she's doomed when she just gets one critical comment. She's also resillient, nobody can call Youna a quitter. Even though this business of trying to become an idol has cost Youna a lot, she's not willing to give it up. She's spent almost half of her life trying to achieve this dream and she's not ready to give that dream up. She's stubbornly clinging to this dream even though it might be better for her to just give it up already.

Youna is from a very small town near Daegu where her parents own a farm. She was a farm girl through and through, growing up amongst more cows and chickens and crops than humans. Then one day when she was 10 her family went to Seoul for a vacation and she got street scouted by an SM scout since she had such a pretty face. Already being enamored by the big city and how different it was from anything back home, Youna begged her parents to be allowed to audition and have a chance to live in this city forever.

So little Youna goes to the audition and she sings but she's not very good, but her face gets her through anyway. Back then she didn't have her anxiety and she was able to charm them in the way a 10 year old girl can charm people. Training was really tough for her, especially at SM. Nothing she did was every good enough, and to be fair she also did not improve very quickly at all, and she certainly never looked good enough even though she was accepted for her looks. She was 16 when that pressure caused her to cave and get plastic surgery on her nose and her eyes. And, what was even worse, she was unceremoniously transferred a month later to Big Hit. 

Things weren;t much better at Big Hit. At this point she'd developed a nasty case of anxiety thanks to always being told she's not good enough at SM, and this didn't help her case at Big Hit. She still didn't improve much beyond a fragile voice and good looks. She knows that she's not a favourite to win this show, but she also fears that it'll be her last chance at idol life and then what will she do?

Youna loves her parents and really misses them when she can't talk to them very often. They're both farmers and don't really understand their daughter's love for the stage and stubborn insistence to become an idol. If she's eliminated she'd probably go home and help on the farm and try to figure out her life from then on.

please introduce yourself to the viewers » Youna bows deeply, and in the movement almost strips over her own feet. She manages to right herself just in time and looks visibly distraught at the messup. "A-annyonghas-seyo," she stammers. "My name is Youn- no ji, Youji- oh damnit- hi." She looks like she could happily melt into the ground.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE IDEA OF COMPETING AGAINST 20 GIRLS? » "I don't like it," she admits. "But I can't say that I haven't always been competing with the other girls- wait I-I probably shouldn't say that should I? Oh no-"

out of the 20 girls competing in atalana, do you think you'll be able to be ranked in the top 7? » "B-be ranked in the top 7?" she stammers. "N-no I don't- I mean I should- But no I- I don't know," she shakes her head, looking more and more mortified as the interview goes on. The interiewer takes mercy on her and goes to the next question.

Is there any trainee in big hit you think will be hard to surpass » "E-everyone?" she all but squeaks. "I know I'm one of the weakest trainees here, it will be hard to beat anyone, but I will try hard to improve. Oh no I'm doomed aren't I?"

please give a message to the viewers watching 'atalana' » She gives a perfect 90 degrees bow toward the camera. "Please support Atalana, support all of us. We are working so hard to make everyone proud, so Atalana fighting!" She gives the fighting gesture, and this might be the first time in the interview where she shows real conviction.

and finally, please give a message to the girls competing in atalana » "Let's do our best and be honest and show our best side." She says, looking left and right to make sure that the interview is over before she lets out a breath of relief.

personality » Haneul is the kind of guy who just floats through life not worrying too much. He's just so chill, nothing can really phase him. It can be infuriating for his employers, any kind of criticism just has him shrug and go on about his business. But he does his work well and brings in results no matter his drifting personality. Half the time Haneul looks like he's half daydreaming going through life, and the other half he's grinning through life, making jokes here and there and not taking anything seriously.

He's such a positive and cheerflul guy too, nothing gets him down. He's got this maddeningly calm exterior but he always means well. Haneul wouldn't hurt a fly. It does seem, sometimes, like he doesn't take life seriously enough, and that's not far from the truth either. Haneul just has this resolve that he's going to be fine no matter what. Whatever happens, he believes that he'll be okay. And so far he has. Haneul is totally dense though, he's not very good at picking up any kind of hints, he just does what he does and doesn't really think about other people's motivations.

history » Haneul was an intern at Big Hit and has since been hired as assistant, helping with styling and concepts and graphic design though more often than not grabbing the coffee, he basically does whatever his seniors need him to do. He was helping the senior concept director with the Atalana graphic concepts, which mostly involved carting folders of concepts around, fetching coffee, and if he got lucky making some concept designs for the logo.  While he was carting around one of the folders as well as the coffees he accidentally ran into Youna, scattering the files and designs and rendering most of them unusable with coffee stains. Youna felt awful as Haneul went off to reprint them. 

Of course Youna being Youna she stressed about this awfully. In her head she all but ruined his life with her carelessness. Meanwhile Haneul didn't really care, he got chewed out for being late but he just shrugged and worked on his own project, not minding much. So when they crossed paths next Youna first wished she were invisible so she wouldn't have to face him, but of course Haneul recognized her and cheerfully said hi. Since then Youna has had this feeling that she has to make it up to him.

So the next day on her way to training she bought coffee for him but she was too scared to go up to the offices to give it to him so she hung around the lobby hoping he'd come in and she could give him the coffee then but Haneul was late and Youna was already late for training and got an earful for that. Next day she tried again and actually managed to run into Haneul- only to find out he doesn't like coffee. He didn't mean it bad and he's far too dense to realize that telling Youna "thanks but I don't drink coffee" would make Youna feel even worse. Next time she made sure to get him a hot chocolate, his preferred drink, and he just thought she was being friendly and started chatting with her. All of this leading up to a strange kind of friendship.

interactions » They usually enter the building around the same time and ever since Youna's coffee adventure they take turns getting each other a hot drink in the morning and this evolved into lunch breaks as well. Haneul's eternal calm is really comforting for Youna who is eternally on edge. When she's hanging out with him his calm is contageous. He's one of the few people who can get her to calm down when she's full-on panicking, like the time when she thought she wouldn't be allowed to join Atalana because she was one of the last to be notified. He was the one who calmly reasoned that someone always had to be the last to be notified and there were 20 girls competing, there was time. And that was enough for Youna to take a deep breath and think okay maybe she's not doomed. He also always managed to make her laugh and she just loves the short bursts of time she gets to spend with him.

Somewhere along the way their little interactions evolved into a serious crush for the both of them, but Haneul is too dense to see she feels the same and Youna is too anxious to even hope. So for now
