Nam Woo Hyun - "Write.." Album Review + Other Stuff

This is my first time doing an album review, but I shall do my best to englighten you on why you should listen to his entire album! First of all, honestly, ballad is not my thing... And of course Woo Hyun had to come up with an all out ballad album. Thanks Woollim.. BUT I do know that ballad is one of Woo Hyun's strength so all the ballad songs has got to be good!

01. Write..

It has the perfect melancholy feel that will be carried out throughout the entire album. Very eery in the sense that you can feel the loss and yearning towards someone. Would make really nice background music to write angst stories actually with an inspirational moment towards the end. It's way too short though, but definitely beautiful in its short length. :')

02. 끄덕끄덕 (Nod Nod / Nodding)

The intro humming was enough to captivate me. And then his heavenly voice appears~ It could be a really good ost track for a drama. The highlights here are his to-die-for falsettos. It's so soft throughout the song to express that heartbroken feeling. The adlib at 2:34 is.. ughh... Killing me softly.. The chorus is filled with these falsettos, which is amazing because Woo Hyun's falsetto voice is really beautiful. The soft instrumentals are beautiful and I absolutely love that short instrumental break at 3:57. It was composed and arranged very well. The entire melody is soothing and catchy enough.

03. 그 사람

I actually really like the intro piano instrumental for this.. It has that similar element/melody to the Season 2 intro song I feel. But it sounds like it'd be a really good soundtrack for a video game, like Kingdom Hearts. XD The song itself was not exactly my cup of tea cause it is so depressing. If you like heartbreaking emo songs, this might be for you. His voice is definitely amazing as usual, especially when he holds those long notes in the chorus. Again such a drama ost worthy song where you can see a whole clip of a couple fighting and the typical guy grabbing the wrist, pulling her against him, and apologizing or saying he doesn't wanna let go. This song can definitely inspire some fanfic idea guys, use it as a prompt~

04. 향기 (Scent)

On the contrary of track number 3, the intro did not catch my attention at all, but as the song continues, I found this to be my favorite song of the album. I already knew it would ever since I listened to the album preview. And I'm super proud cause Woo Hyun wrote this song himself! The arrangement is DAEBAK! My weakness in songs is when they build up the bridge and make it really majestic, and then they suddenly die down to a suuuuper soft chorus with only piano playing or guitar strings being plucked, before it is built up into its majestic entrance once again. This song does that! It's also very catchy and I think I could sing along to the harmonies after listening to it once or twice. Love love love everything about this!

05. Gravity

This and Scent have that distinct Woo Hyun style, since he has written this as well~ Instead of being a ballad, I think this is more like slow rock? I don't actually know the genre name, but it's something I absolutely adore! The chord progression in the intro is already the type of progression I love in songs. His vocals are much stronger than for the other songs since he is belting the notes instead of singing them as a soft falsetto. Ughhhh everything about this is love! The verse, chorus, bridge.. Everything is so catchy! This is also one of my favorites in this album along with Scent.

06. Stand by me

Uughhhh.. It starts of with his low and deep whispery voice and I'm dead.. Like if Nodding was falsetto heavy, Gravity shows his belting, then this track shows the goodness of that forlorn whispery voice which sounds so sad but seductive at the same time. Lol.. Or is it just me? XD The chorus is absolutely beautiful, which I realize I am saying about all the tracks. The pace of the song is also nice. I don't know if he's speaking Engrish or not though.. Sorry Woo Hyun.. Oh, the adlib here is also really nice! This track also has Woo Hyun's usual 'dramatic' singing style!

Overall, you should listen to it even if you aren't a fan of ballad. There are many good songs, especially the ones he composed.. Totally not being biased... XD Please support him, don't forget to vote for him!!! Imagine his tears of joy when he wins first place :') Woo Hyun hwaitinggg~ <3

On a side note, me and some friends did MV reaction of course. I'm still working on the fanfic (8760 Hours) inspired by the teaser.  And there is even a blog theory that connects Woo Hyun's Nodding mv to Sung Gyu's Kontrol (read here).

His album was really nostalgic for me, it took me back to the 90s when romantic ballads were a huge thing. I loved all of the songs, but 그사람 and Stand by me stood out to me, it caught my ears immediately. And holy crap the music video, candid model Woohyun everywhere. Somewhat disappointed that 'Everyday' wasn't in the album, hopefully it will be in the next one
