Challenging Yourself as a Writer

After looking through all the stories I've written, be it published or unpublished, I realise there is at least one thing they share in common. For one, all of them are slice-of-life (except for my new story and another story which I published as a VN, but they're just two stories). They are also mostly very simple in terms of plot and are very character-centric. This worries me a little because I do believe that a good writer should be able to be diverse and be able to handle more than one genre. Lately, supernatural and action have been my favourites lately (thanks to anime haha) so I'll probably head to those directions now.

Anyway, my point is: Always challenge yourself to be a better writer by experimenting on different topics. I have to admit it's quite difficult to get out of my comfort zone, but I feel that dabbing a little into every genre is a truly exhilarating experience. For instance, writing action is more fun than I thought (I actually watched actual sword fights to see how the movements were like). Researching about action made me learn more about swords in general, and that there were more to action scenes than I thought. (Believe me, I once thought action was just cool people swinging swords and stuff, but there is actually much meaning inside every movement if one observes action scenes carefully). I don't know much about other genres yet, but I'm very excited to research about fantasy and horror and discover more things that I haven't known before!

I feel you about the genres, etc. All of my stories are strongly character-driven rather than plot-driven. I'm writing "horror" and fantasy right now (although I haven't published anything), so that's kind of helping me get out of my angst zone.

I agree with your advice! Write what you know, but also write what you don't know :)
