Getting Featured, My VERY first AFF fanfic, and a few Writing Tips
Hi everyone!
My story Tutor Wars was featured today, which makes this my third fanfic to be featured. Honestly, I never, EVER thought that I would be featured. So I'm going to write a little reflection on my experiences writing and all.
Disclaimer: I sound kinda preachy in this post, and I'm kinda rambly. The bold caps yelling is basically me shouting at my past self about how much of a moron I was LOL.
I started writing on AFF in late 2012. My stories would get 100 subscribers tops, I got a handful of upvotes, and no one was commenting on my stories. I would always wonder why. I was working hard on my stories. Didn't I deserve some recognition? Were they really that bad? Due to a variety of reasons, I made a huge post declaring that I was going on "permanent hiatus", and bade everyone on AFF farewell.
The problem was, after a few weeks, I got really bored. I wanted to write again.... but I couldn't just go back to my old account. I'd just made an extremely dramatic post telling everyone that I was leaving.
So in late 2013, I made a new account (this account- PrincessVivi) to start uploading new fanfictions onto. For some reason, all my stories on this account got pretty popular, and I didn't understand why. What was the difference between the stories on my new account and the stories on my old account? That's when I went back and read my first fanfiction. And holy crap, it was terrible. That's when I realized that throughout the course of these 3 years, as I had written more and more, my writing had naturally improved.
DISCLAIMER: Grab a few tissues before you start. You might start crying. Of laughter. This is a terrible story.
There were a few key differences in how I handled myself on my two different accounts. These are my main writing tips!
- YOU CAN'T PUT AFF ON A RESUME. YOUR SCHOOLWORK/YOUR CAREER IS THE NUMBER ONE THING IN YOUR LIFE AND YOU SHOULD FOCUS ON IT FIRST HONESTLY IF YOU'RE NOT DOING WELL IN SCHOOL THEN SCREW AFF GO DO YOUR WORK. AND DON'T JUST SAY "OH LOL SCREW _____ I'LL JUST WING IT!!" NO DON'T DO THAT. THINK OF COLLEGE. THINK OF THAT PAY RAISE. THINK OF YOUR FUTURE. GET YOUR TOGETHER AND STOP WRITING U-KISS FANFICTION UNDER YOUR TABLE IN MATH CLASS. EVERYONE CAN SEE YOU. YOU LOOK LIKE A . (I wish someone had told me this freshman year)
- The more you write, the more the quality of your writing will improve. I didn't have anyone editing/giving any feedback on my stories, and my writing still ended up getting better (if you do have someone to critique your stories, though, that'll help a ton). When you write different stories, try to use different points of views, tenses, and genres.
- Don't write to get featured (like I used to do). Write to improve your writing skills. The more you write, the better you'll become in general, which really helps with college application essays/summer program essays/school essays/resumes/anything. And again, that's the stuff that really matters in life....
- Don't pressure yourself into finishing stories and constantly updating them. You never want writing to become a burden. Only write when you feel like writing... if you try and force something, it's not going to be as good as it could've been.
- Write one story at a time!!!!!!!!!!! Don't burden yourself with multiple stories. If I have a great idea, I aim to make it a one-shot (so I'm more likely to finish it). But then if you keep adding more onto your stories, you can make them multi-chaptered stories.
- HAVE FUN while you're writing!!! I've tried so many times to write something ~cool~ and ~mysterious~ that had a great concept.... but I just wasn't feeling. Don't force anything. Again, it'll just become a burden.
I freaking love AFF literally everyone on here is so nice and supportive. 99% of the comments I have gotten have been so sweet they make me smile and want to hug you all. And like even if people give criticism, they phrase it in a nice way that makes you want to hug them and YEAH I just really love this site. That's why I haven't gone to Fanfiction.net/Wattpad/another site- it's because this site is seriously a great community. I love you guys!!!!!!!!
