「 hot issue 」: park, jaemin

- HOT ISSUE APPLICANT PORTFOLIO

full name: park, jaemin
other names:
- J-Minus: his "underground" name, under which he released his first mixtape.

birth date: 2/15/1996
blood type: ab
birth place: Los Angeles, California
hometown: Koreatown/LA, California, USA
ethnicity: Korean
languages:
- Korean (fluent - even though he grew up outside of korea, he speaks korean with his family and many of his friends. when he moved to korea, initially he didn't know a lot of the slang; since then, he's caught on quickly, since it's so vital for wordplay and punchlines for raps, but sometimes there are references he doesn't get.)
- English (fluent)

height: 178 cm
weight: 59 kg
faceclaim + back up: U-Kiss's Soohyun + Park Taejung
appearance:
- basically, if you tried to make him crossdress for a girl group dance or drama spoof, he would never pass. part of this is because he likes working out and so he has muscles and abs and broad shoulders. but it's also just the way he moves  with a lot of force and intention and just has a very self-assured, confident aura.
- he has a sizable snapback collection, but choosing which one to wear each morning is the extent of his fashion interest. he tends to wear lots of sweatshirts, hoodies, and sweatpants, usually wears high-tops. most of his clothes are black because it doesn't stain easily (so he can get by another week without doing laundry) and beacuse everything in his closet goes together since nobody will give you crap for wearing black on black.

personality:
- simply put, jaemin is loud. he doesn't really get the whole "thinking in your head" thing; usually, he has to say something out loud for him to process it. he also just really like people and if there are others around, nad can't help but start asking them about their day and start a conversation. it's not something he can turn off he's not so great at reading situations, so people sometimes snap at him, but they can never stay mad because jaemin is basically an overgrown puppy who follows you around and genuinely just wants to know what you think of that new girl group song or what's your favorite ice cream flavor and how your day wend (and if you say you're having a bad day- he'll want to know what happened and why that happened and exactly what happened before and after). unexpectedly, this also makes him a great person to talk to when you need to vent, because he'll listen and be really sympathetic and actually care about what you say,
once you get over his slightly overbearing personality.
- rap appeals to him because it works with his need to think out loud. he thinks it cool how you can put so much meaning into a few simple works and how it combines cleverness and punchlines with raw emotion. he writes lyrics as an outlet at times to figure out how he's feeling, especially when he's feeling down. ironically, he tends not to share his own problems with other people because he doesn't want to burden them.
- wherever he goes, jaemin tends to seek out a community and gets lonely very easily (it's how he ended up in the hip-hop scene when he first arrived in korea and realized he didn't know anyone). he's very good at talking to people and networking, and he has no qualms striking up conversation with strangers to make his circle of aquiantinces bigger. he has a good memory for what people say, so when you see him again a few days, a week, or even a month later, he'll ask you about how your math test went or bring up your favorite celebrity's new drama. it's not like he purposefully is keeping track of these details, but when he talks to you, you can tell he gives you his full attention.
- he dislikes conflicts and usually tries to diffuse a tense situation by keeping a bright smile and cracking a joke or convincing one of involved people that now would be a great time for an ice cream break to bring them away from the group and collect themselves. his humor also makes him great on variety shows, interviews, etc.
- some people write off his loudness as arrogance, but really it's the opposite. deep, deep down, his greatest fear is that everyone is going to hate him one day because he'll let them down. he's not really aware of this, but but it pushes him to work hard, sometimes to unreasonable extents. at times, he's painfully aware of how inadequate he is: he's not extremely handsome or a dancing machine or a singing prodigy. even with rapping, he may be much better than most idol rappers, but he knows there are tons of amazing rappers out there that he doesn't even compare to. (admittedly, he knows he's comparing himself to people with more experience and who've made rap their career. but sometimes it feels like- doesn't the group deserve someone who's better than him?) he wrote most of the tracks his mixtape when he was 17. fans laud it, but like most things from your teenage years, jaemin cringes a lot when he hears them. he doesn't really dwell on these things though and it's not a huge part of his personality on a day-to-day basis. but because of this, he takes criticism very seriously. if someone says he messed up a dance move or reprimands him for being late, he won't shift the blane to anyone else. instead, he'll just apologize and try not to repeat the mistake.

background:

- his parents are from Seoul and emigrated to america for job-related reasons, so jaemin grew up in LA, specifically koreatown. because of this, he had strong ties to the korean community. he grew up listening to Western hip-hop, so his style is really influenced by West Coast hip-hop. later, he became interested in the korean scene, and he tried his hand at writing lyrics and imitating their flow. halfway through high school, jaemin's family returned to Seoul so they could be closer to his grandparents, since his grandfather fell ill.
- initially, he didn't really know anyone so he was on his own a lot. at some point, he wandered into a small hip-hop performance and asked around to figure out how to get into it. he met some people with similar interests who gave him advice, began performing and freestyling, and learned how to edit and produce songs. eventually, he put out a mixtape under the name J-Minus after graduating high school.
- one of his friends that he worked with before asked him to audition with him for yg. he was signed but his friend was not. some of his friends and/or aquaintances accused him of "selling out," but to jaemin, music is music. yg appealed to him because he let artists keep a hand in the creative process and jaemin geuinely wanted to share his music with the worlld as a trainee, jaemin threw himself into it wholeheartedly, especially to improve his dancing ability.

family/friends:
park, dongwoo | father | 53 | he and his father have a slightly distant relationships. even though his father doesn't always approve and support jaemin's decisions, he recognizes that Jaemin is more than capable of making his own decisions and will have to deal with the consequences on his own. he's a stern but loving figure, who's approach is to give jaemin space to figure things out himself.

lee, mijoo | mother | 51 | quiet but caring and affectionate. jaemin's mother isn't particularly loud, so jaemin's outgoing nature is sort of an oddity. she sends jaemin food and messages him on kkt daily.

park, yongwoo | grandfather | 87 | old and senile. he had some unhealthy habits when he was younger, so his health has declined rapidly. jaemin wasn't super close to him, but it's still a sensitive spot for him. he probably has some pages of lyrics about his grandfather stuffed under his bed.

kim, minhyuk | friend | 20 | the friend he auditioned for yg with, but didn't get signed. they still chat, but they aren't as close as they were before when they were making music together.

likes:
- watching the news: he likes being aware of current event, even if there are tragedies. knowing what's happening around the world makes him feel connected to the world and the people back in the states.
- hip hop: lots of western artists, but he looks up a lot to korean artists like supreme team, mc sniper, dok2, epik high, etc.
- talking to the elderly: after living so long, they have so many stories. he could talk to them for weeks on end and still be surprised. he also likes how happy they look sometimes, to have someone that will listen to them talk about their last vacation or how Seoul was like 10, 20, 30 years ago.
- soccer: he's terrible at it, but that's ok.
- his phone: he's constantly using it to chat people, keep his schedule organized, jot down whatever lyrics pop into his brain, etc. he tries to be polite and avoid using it while conversing with people in person, but he'd probably cry if he ever lost his phone.
- working out: a great stress reliever and gives him something to do when he's bored.

dislikes:
- rain: he gets cabin fever and hates being cooped up inside. even when he goes outside, everyone is so dreary and sad.
- drama: especially drama that's intentionally stirred up. he tries to be an easygoing person to avoid getting caught up in that.
- kiwis: they're hairy and gross on the outside, and slimy and sour on the inside.
- plane rides: similar to rain, he doesn't like staying still for so long. usually he'll get up half a dozen times to walk to the restroom, just to give his legs something to do. he also finds the very concept of an airplane kind of scary (just a metal cage?? launched thousands of feet into the sky??? how is this not crashing?????)
- suits: so uncomfortable and unneccessarily complicated

habits: 3+
- bites his bottom lip a lot when he's nervous
- when he wakes up in the morning and before he goes to bed, he always checks his phone for notifications and goes over his schedule.
- his voice gets slightly louder and louder as he talks, especially if he's in a good mood. he doesn't notice it happening, and he'll start off a conversation in a normal tone and eventually he'll end up at a booming volume.
- his voice also cracks when he's upset

trivia: 3+
- he makes a lot of rhymes and plays on words on the fly
- looks up to a lot of people, especially those in the company who've been training since forever and are crazy talented.
- trying to wake him in the morning is like trying to wake a rock. you'd swear he's a corpse.
- he thinks his best feature are his hands
- he can hold his breath for a full minute
- he's only been rendered speechless 3 times in his life: when a girl kissed him on the playground in 4th grade, when his parents announced they were moving to Seoul, and when he was accepted into YG
- used to have two left feet and almost made his date at a middle school dance cry because of it.
- a bit of an insomniac. usually spends the night working on dance practices, writing lyrics, or working out until he feels tired.
- his immune system is like superhuman or something because he never gets sick. even when he does something dumb like play soceer in the rain for two hours or spend the day taking care of a sick friend.
- he's not sure whether to be amazed or intimidated by how thorough some fans are. he appreciates them wholly and truly, but he tries to keep them at an arm's length because sasaengs still terrify him
- if being an idol doesn't work out, he'd love to work as a producer for yg one day.

stage name: Jaemin
stage persona: Playful and Comedic
strengths: Rapping, Variety, Composing and Producing Music, Networking
weaknesses: Singing, Dancing, Shutting Up (actually tho), Pushes himself too hard sometimes
singing/rapping/dancing twin: -/BTS's Rap Monster? (but without the distinctive voice? i was also considering i11evn since he has more of the "West Coast" vibe but a tad more inexperienced) / EXO's Tao

love interest: applicant (could you match one up?)
back-up love interest: none
personality traits:
it's pretty flexible i think, since jaemin gets along with most people. someone loud would work will with jaemin and constantly talk at each other, but i feel like that's more best friend territory. i think i might prefer someone on the quieter side, since jaemin could get them out of their shell and they would be able to listen to jaemin ramble about his new lyrics.
relationship:

jaemin's not exactly gay, but he's not straight either. he's attracted to pretty girls in magazines and snsd members and all those people, but he's not romantically into them.
