11. “Don’t you dare throw that snowball!” – Onkey

Gwiboon smiled as she watched Taemin clamber down the hallway, his little body wobbling from side to side as he tried to rush after his brother in his bulky snow suit.

“Minho, wait for your brother!”

The teen rolled his eyes but waited for Taemin to reach him. He helped the six-year old put on his snow boots before leading him outside. Taemin squealed with delight before Minho slammed the door shut.

Gwiboon hurried to pull on her favorite sweatshirt and warm socks before moving back into the hallway. She could hear Jinki’s boisterous laughter through the door, no doubt amused by something the boys were doing. Donning her new hat, she fixed her bangs and winked at her reflection before opening the door.

Minho and Jinki were beginning to roll the base for a snowman while Taemin was running around them, kicking through the snow and chattering excitedly.

“Mommy!” Taemin squealed, running over to Gwiboon who swooped down to pick him up and kiss his reddening nose.

“Are you having fun, Tae-baby?”

“We’re building a snowman!”

“I see that,” she said, laughing at his enthusiasm before he squirmed out of her arms and wobbled back over to help with the snowman.

Jinki was watching as Minho began rolling the second ball on his own, his arms crossed and a look of pride on his face. Gwiboon was happy to see Minho so engaged with the family. His recent 15th birthday had brought about the horrible hormones that plagued all teenagers, causing him to become increasingly moody and distant.

Gwiboon grinned at seeing Minho’s dazzling smile return after so many stoic months. She was happy that even under all of the grunts and sass, he was still her smiling baby boy. Taemin seemed equally as excited with Minho’s mood and flitted around him asking questions about what he was doing.

Jinki walked over to Gwiboon and slung his arm around her waist, drawing her in close so he could kiss her forehead.

“They’re so cute,” Gwiboon gushed, proud that they had created such perfect children.

“Mm,” was all Jinki said, the slight crinkle in the corner of his eye giving away his pleasure at seeing Minho play with Taemin again.

The two watched them, Minho now instructing Taemin on how to roll the final ball for their snowman. Finally satisfied with the size, Minho hoisted it up to sit on the top. Taemin clapped, causing Minho to smile down at him and ruffle his hair.

“Mommy, look!” Taemin cried.

“Very nice, baby,” she called, Jinki nodding in agreement.

Minho pulled Taemin away, instructing him to look for some rocks while he gathered two twigs. Jinki walked over to help Taemin brush off the snow and find some good rocks while Gwiboon started to help Minho look for some twigs.

“Are you having a good time, Minho-ya?” she tried to ask nonchalantly, hoping that he wouldn’t see through her overt caring-mother routine.

Minho stiffened slightly, making Gwiboon’s heart sink, but he only smiled sheepishly before holding up two sticks triumphantly and turning back towards the snowman. Jinki and Taemin had also been successful in their search; Jinki now holding Taemin up so that he could place the rocks on the snowman’s face and torso.

“Great job, Taemin-ah,” Jinki said softly, kissing the boy’s head before setting him down. Taemin stared up at his father in wonder, a warm smile on his face as he hugged Jinki’s leg.

Gwiboon, walking slightly behind Minho, was surprised when he turned around and held out one of the sticks.

“Here, mom…”

She took it, smiling brightly at him. Gwiboon caught Jinki’s gaze and raised her eyebrows at him in excitement at the interaction.

They approached the snowman together, sticking one arm in at a time before it was complete and they moved back to admire their handiwork.

“What a good-looking snowman,” Gwiboon said, wrapping her arm lightly around Minho and squeezing him close. She held her breath in anticipation of him shrugging her off, but he only leaned into her and shrugged.

“Cool snowman, you guys!”

The sudden interruption caused them to jump, turning around to see who was there.

“Jongie!” Taemin squealed, running over to give the neighbor boy a big hug.

“Hey, Taeminnie,” he said happily, laughing at his six-year-old enthusiasm before looking up at Minho and glancing away quickly.

Gwiboon noticed Minho stiffen ever so slightly out of the corner of her eye. Weird, she thought. This was definitely not a normal interaction for the two boys who had been best friends since preschool.

As Taemin pulled Jonghyun over to point out different aspects of the snowman, Gwiboon took careful note of the way Minho picked at his hair, as if he was attempting to groom himself.  He walked over to join the other boys, uncharacteristically engaging with Taemin’s never-ending chatter while glancing at Jonghyun every few seconds before looking away.

“Jinki,” Gwiboon hissed, pulling him away so that they wouldn’t be overheard. He complied, knowing that she had something up her sleeve.

“Jinki, I think Minho might like Jonghyun,” she said conspiratorially. Jinki peered over to briefly observe how the boys interacted, apparently not as intrigued as she was.

“Jinki,” she said, whining at the blank look on his face.

“Gwi,” he sighed. “Please don’t embarrass him. Let them figure it out on their own-”

“But they don’t know what to do!” Gwiboon entreated, shaking his arm pleadingly.

He shook his head, kissing her cheek endearingly before going to put away the shovel he had been using earlier.

An idea formed as she watched Taemin play in the snow, picking it up and throwing it into the air so that it floated down in soft flakes around him. Minho and Jonghyun were now standing closer together; Minho’s taller frame hunched in so that he could be closer to Jonghyun, who was smiling up at him as he talked animatedly about something.

She walked over as nonchalantly as she could, leaning down to pick up a handful of snow and packing it together lightly before lobbing it gently at Taemin’s back. He squeaked in shock, turning around to stare at his mother, who was laughing and running around Minho and Jonghyun, hiding behind them.

Taemin, his small face determined, scooped up a handful of snow and threw it as hard as he could at the group, the small clump of snow falling apart before it reached them. Gwiboon laughed as he tried again, moving over to him and helping him form another ball, this one more firm, and throw it towards Minho.

It hit the teen in the stomach and he glared at his mother, shooting daggers at her until Jonghyun laughed and threw his own snowball at Minho.

“Come on, Minho-goon. You’re so serious all the time!”

Minho seemed frozen at Jonghyun’s words, before a determined look passed over his face and he retaliated. Soon, a snowball fight ensued, Minho and Jonghyun throwing at each other while Gwiboon and Taemin ended up just scooping up snow and loosely throwing it in the air.

Gwiboon’s heart soared at seeing the teens having so much fun, and she attempted to lure Taemin away so that he could start getting ready for bed. He protested and Gwiboon didn’t have the heart to deny him.

She eventually let the kids take over, stumbling towards Jinki who was sitting idly on the front step, his phone poised to take pictures of the chaos of flying snow and laughing boys.

Gwiboon sat on Jinki’s lap, snuggling into his embrace as he pulled her now wet hair away from her neck and kissed her lightly. Shivers raced down her spine at the intimate contact and she felt Jinki smile at her reaction.

“I told you not to get involved,” Jinki cupped her chin so that she had to meet his gaze.

“But look at how much fun they’re having now!” she pouted cutely, attempting to distract him.

He clucked his tongue at her, brushing some stray moisture off her cheek before Gwiboon noticed that it had grown eerily quiet behind her. She turned around, seeing her two boys standing in front of them and feeling Jinki’s arms tighten around her so that she couldn’t move.

Trapped, she realized what was happening as Taemin and Minho both raised their hands, one snowball each, and smiled daringly at her.

“Don’t you dare throw that snowball!” Gwiboon scolded, squirming in Jinki’s arms with no success.

The boys threw their snowballs at the same time, Taemin’s dying out before it got to her but Minho’s hitting her square in the chest.

“Gotcha!” Taemin squealed, turning around to run towards Jonghyun who was standing off to the side. Jonghyun pretended to run away from another stray snowball that Taemin attempted to throw at him and Minho couldn’t help but smile at the pair.

Gwiboon, affronted that she had been ambushed, finally pushed free from Jinki, who was laughing at her facial expression, before she stomped away and got her own snowball.

“Revenge will be so sweet,” she said, half to herself but loudly enough for Jinki’s benefit. He stood straight, as if prepared for his punishment, only making a kissy face at her before Gwiboon threw her snowball at him, hitting him on the shoulder.

“You know,” Jinki said, brushing off his shoulder before moving forward. Gwiboon recognized the lazy strut, Jinki’s cool exterior cracking just a bit as he gathered his own snowball.

“You really should leave things alone, let them work out on their own.” He walked forward, a glint to his eye making Gwiboon shiver from something other than cold. There was no denying that her husband was hot, but did he really have to flaunt it?

“But it w-worked,” she stammered, glancing over at the teens who were now helping Taemin make a snow angel. Jonghyun was instructing Taemin to move his arms wider and Minho was standing behind, moving Jonghyun’s arms to demonstrate the proper motion.

“Gwi,” Jinki said, snapping her attention back to him. He threw the snowball lightly up into the air as if they had all the time in the world.

“Yeobo,” Gwiboon whined, hating the way he was dragging this out.

Jinki laughed, before tossing the snowball down next to him and striding toward her, scooping her up in his arms and walking over to a particularly large pile of snow next to their driveway.

“You wouldn’t.”

He smiled down at her sweetly, whispering in her ear, “Oh I most definitely will,” before dropping her in the snow.
