Growing Up Years

Yunho has been staring at the woman he loved the most. She had aged a lot since he last saw her a few years back. He was never really able to come home to his parents after he had told them that he would be marrying his best friend Jaejoong. His parents never accepted the two as a couple and Yunho's father was more than infuriated when he heard that the two queer men had children. Yunho's mother, however, was more forgiving than the other. She was happy to hear that her son had decided to start a family but was not able to meet her grandchildren because her husband forbade her to. Oh, she did miss her son. After her daughter, Jihye had decided to live on her own, she and her husband were left with just each other. She missed her sweet children, of course. And she did try to convince her husband to stop being stubborn and visit their son but it was all in vain.    "What are you doing here?" Yunho asked again, the shock now finally gone.  "I was buying some groceries when I saw you sit down here." She placed her palm on her son's cheek. It has been years since she last held him. "I miss you, my dearest." She fought back her tears.  "Where's Dad?" He looked around anxiously. Even at that age, Yunho was still afraid of his father. He had disappointed him and he knew his dad will never accept him for who he really is. "He's at home. That old man doesn't want to get off the couch now." She shook her head. "And are these my grandchildren now?" She peered inside the stroller and saw the two beautiful babies inside. "They are beautiful." She said and lightly Yunjae's cheek. "I'm sorry, Yunho-ah." She faced her son again and stared at him.  "Why are you saying sorry?" Yunho gazed back into her teary eyes.  "Was it hard taking care of them? Was that why you were crying?" She reached out to hold her son's hand. "I'm sorry I couldn't be here to teach you and help you out."   "Yunho-ah!" Jaejoong's frantic voice called out. He was about to run to his husband when he noticed that he was with a rather familiar woman. "Eomonim..." He politely bowed at the elderly woman and avoided eye contact. "I... I didn't know you were here... I would've... bought... something... on... the... way..." He mumbled awkwardly. He was about to mumble more when he felt motherly arms envelope him.  "It's alright, my dear." She whispered comfortingly into his ear. "Long time no see." Jaejoong felt something warm and wet his shoulder. "I'm sorry if I was being so hard on you two. You did a really great job taking care of our Yunho, Jaejoongie." It has been so long since she had last called him by that name and it tugged on Jaejoong's every heartstring.  "I... I'm sorry." Jaejoong sobbed on her shoulder. "What are you sorry about?" She rubbed his back.  "I'm sorry for taking away your only son. I'm sorry for disappointing you because I'm... gay..." He choked out. He can never forget those hateful eyes that glared at him when Yunho announced that he was marrying Jaejoong.  "Shhh... It's okay..." She pat his back.    Neither of the three imagined this kind of reunion. They were all crying in the middle of a hugely populated mall and people were starting to stare at them as they pass by. But none of them seemed to care. It has been years since the mother and son had embraced each other. Now that they have reconciled, nobody, even Yunho's father, could pull them apart.    "I didn't know that Yunjae had leukemia..." Yunho's mother held back her tears as she gazed at the peacefully sleeping baby. "He looks so... fragile."  "He is. He's still going through some therapy to get him catch up with Yunjoong's development." Jaejoong explained.  "Aigoo... you boys must really be having a hard time, eh?" She cooed. "You know what, halmeoni will drop by so we can cut your dads some slack." She Yunjae's cheek.  "You don't have to, Mom... We can... live by..." Yunho refused.  "I know you live by everyday. But after seeing you like that earlier, I need to help you boys out." She clicked her tongue. "And don't stop me, young man."    The following week was a little calmer and easier for the family. Yunho's mom would drop by twice a week and would take care of the twins while the two men were at work. Jaejoong couldn't express his gratitude enough. The woman the he felt so ashamed at was helping him and his family out and was treating him like a son again.    Yunho, on the other side, was more ashamed of himself. He felt a little mad at himself for letting his old mother take care of his sons. How could he be a father when he couldn't even take care of his own children? More so, how could he do this to his mother? His mom who should just be resting is still taking care of two very young babies just because he coul
