Jessica was watching her drama on the television when her phone vibrated startling her. She had to regretfully take her focus off of the screen to check her cellular device.
“Are you busy tonight? Can we video chat?”, the message read. Immediately her annoyance at being disturbed during her drama had diminished into a huge grin.
“Of course not, you know I only sleep and laze around. Call me whenever you’re ready”, her own reply read.
Jessica didn’t put her phone down as she waited for a reply. She was no longer able to focus on the dialogue between the characters on her tv.
“That's true. Alright, I’ll see you in a bit! I miss you.” She read before squirming in her couch excitedly. The things Kim Taeyeon does to me, she thought.
Flashback five years ago and the two girls had met through their mutual friend, Yuri. Back in college when they first met, it was due to the fact that Yuri had wanted to get Taeyeon out of her depression. Taeyeon had recently gone through a bad break up and once Jessica was shown a picture of the girl, she was all on board to help the girl get back up. The physical attraction, of course evolved to a more deep romantic one.
Back to present time and Jessica and Taeyeon were not exactly a couple yet. Jessica always wanted to confess, but she felt so scared of rejection that she’d always chicken out.
There was one time where Taeyeon had gotten a girlfriend while Jessica was in New York visiting her sister, and Jessica ignored Taeyeon for a week. Jessica hadn’t felt more rejected than during that time. After that girlfriend incident, she felt like she had been totally pushed into the "friend zone" and was too scared to talk about her true feelings.
Currently, Taeyeon was in her hometown Jeonju visiting her family, while Jessica was stuck in Seoul doing nothing but her favorite hobby, sleeping.
Jessica was glad to hear that Taeyeon wanted to video call, since she hadn’t messaged Jessica since she got to Jeonju, making Jessica feel neglected.
While Jessica was busy reminiscing of her and Taeyeon’s relationship, her laptop started to ring. “Shoot!”, Jessica muttered while tripping on her blanket frantically rushing off the couch to reach her laptop in her bedroom.
Finally reaching her precious laptop, Jessica accepted Taeyeon’s call, only to be met with the cutest of all faces.
“HIIIIIII!”, the girl on the other line yelled with an eye smile making Jessica laugh.
“Jesssssssicaaaaaaaaaaaa!”, Taeyeon said with aegyo.
“Kim Taeyeon, what’s with the aegyo, are you on drugs?” Jessica asked with a grin that wouldn’t come off her face.
“It’s because I missed you.”
“That’s funny since you seemed like you were having a lot of fun without me. Not even bothering to message me to tell me you got there safely.”
“I’m sorry, I got caught up with the family. Oh, they told me to tell you they missed you. They want you to come with me next time.” Taeyeon said while smiling.
“Fine you’re forgiven, but only because I love your family.”
“Thank you, they love you too.”
“Sooo, tell me how your trip is going?” Jessica asked while changing her position on the bed to see Taeyeon better.
“It was good until tonight. At dinner, mom asked about me dating.”
“Oh?” Jessica questioned with a quirked brow.
“Yeah, she was all like ‘You’re old enough to have kids by now’ and ‘You’re going to become a lonely cat woman’ blah blah blah. You would think she’d know that I prefer dogs by now.” Taeyeon joked.
“And that you prefer girls. Ha.” Jessica added.
“That too.”
Jessica laughed while Taeyeon just seemingly stared into Jessica’s soul through the computer screen, making the latter stop laughing.
“What?” Jessica asked while feeling uncomfertable at the intense gaze.
“Nothing…it’s just that I sometimes think about how lucky whoever gets to date you would be.” Taeyeon said with a light chuckle.
“You do?”
“Yeah.”
“Really?”
“Yes, Jessica. How many more times are you going to ask me?” Taeyeon questioned rolling her eyes.
Jessica had a lot of questions she wanted to ask the girl in that moment. Do you like me? Am I just a friend? Can we be more? Am I pretty enough for you? There were so many questions she wanted to ask but the one thing stopping her was her lack in confidence.
“Jess? Are you sleeping with your eyes open again?” Taeyeon said with a smile.
“Huh? No, I’m still up.”
“Good, I wanted to talk to you longer.”
Things like that were why Jessica couldn’t move on and like someone else all these six years. Whenever Jessica feels like she should just move on and find someone who will like her back, Taeyeon throws sweet things in her face. Whether it’s in the form of ‘I miss you’s’ or small gifts Taeyeon always has her wrapped around her finger.
Jessica looked into Taeyeon’s eyes through the screen before deciding it was now or never.
“What is it?” Taeyeon asked feeling Jessica stare at her silently.
“Nothing…it’s just that I sometimes think about how cute we would be together.” Jessica said boldly.
“Huh? What did you say?”
“You didn’t hear me?!?” Jessica asked receiving another confused look from Taeyeon.
“Did you mute yourself?” Taeyeon asked.
“Oh my god, just my luck.” Jessica muttered before un-muting herself.
“Jess?”
“Yeah?”
“Oh, I can hear you now!”
“Yeah, I muted myself by accident.” Jessica muttered with no energy, feeling dejected after her failed confession.
“Hey, what’s wrong?” Taeyeon worriedly asked.
“Nothing.”
“Hey, if it makes you feel better…I sometimes think about the same thing.”
“What?” Jessica was confused.
“Like you said. I also sometimes think about how cute we would be together.” Taeyeon smirked.
“W-what…? I thought I was mute? You said you couldn't hear me...?”
“You were but I could read your lips, silly.” Taeyeon chuckled.
Jessica was still processing everything that happened before Taeyeon interrupted her brain working.
“I have to go now, mom’s calling for me.”
“Huh? Oh okay.” Jessica answered still dazed and confused.
Taeyeon chuckled before adding, “So I’ll be expecting you to accompany me on a date once I’m back. Bye Jess!”
“W-wait what?” Jessica muttered before the screen went black.
