Veil Of Ignorance A Horror MarkJin One-shotMark had just stepped onto the road when he heard Jackson call out to him. Instinctively, he turned around to wave but instead he was greeted with Jackson's panicked shouts telling him to "Move the away." Barely registering what was happening when he heard the loud blare of a car's honk, Mark was not able to escape in time nor was he prepared for the sheer force that sent him crashing onto the windscreen. It would have felt like he got slammed in the chest with a sledge hammer but at that moment when he was thrown onto the windscreen, the cervical vertebrae in his neck fractured and he had lost sensation all over his body - saving him the physical pain of the crash.
The car screeched to a stop but the windscreen had already shattered on impact. The air bag ballooned and Mark's body had bounced off the car, accompanied by broken cries that tore through Jackson's chest. It cut right through the debris that tinkled against the rough tarmac and the noise from the panicked surroudings.
Lying in the pool of his own blood, Mark's pulse went flat.
-----
BEFOREFor most of Mark's life, he has been the low-profile pretty boy in school that no one actually bothered to look at until puberty hit him like a truck. His features sharpened, his baby fats and braces gone. Paired with a low voice, he attracted many girls. However, due to the many years sitting at lunch break alone, Mark was unable to keep a conversation going without panicking and shying away from the spotlight was his second nature. Many had found it hard to interact with him and gave up within the first few weeks of trying to talk to him but in his third year of high school, a new student from Hong Kong transfered into his school - specifically, his class.
This new classmate gave an introduction that was difficult to forget. "Hi, my name is Jackson Wang and I'm from Hong Kong but you can call me wild and y." It was a cringe-worthy introduction that had everyone in the class bursting with laughter. By lunch break, Jackson became the most popular kid in school and was seated at back of the cafeteria with the most popular jocks and chicks dying for his attention.
Mark carried his food tray to the front, right beside the lunch queue, where the area was 'allocated' for the geeks and was soon joined by Sungjae and Sanghyuk. Sungjae, the chattiest of the three, liked to call them the 'Lunch friends' who did nothing together but eat during breaks. The three of them would naturally sit together even though the only thing they had in common was the title 'geek'. Do not get mistakened, although they were called geeks, they did not excel or top the cohort in any aspect. Those, were the nerds. They were well-received in school as they were smart, witty, (accidentally) funny and could help with homework. The geeks were the trash of the school, the ones who - according to most popular girl, Nana - "should not even."
The three of them had grown used to whatever attention anyone actually spared to insult them and lived with it. To them, it did not matter. They just wanted to finish school and get the hell out. Well, that was the initial plan, until Sungjae started crushing on Nana and the only thing he would ever talk about during lunch was the way she smiled and the way her eyes seemed to sparkle. His endless "Ooo"s and "Ahh"s annoyed Mark of course, but he never said a thing about it, considering how they were technically, not friends. It was none of his business if Sungjae, a hopeless romantic, was going to get his heart physically crushed by Nana's everloving boyfriend, Ji Ho. Human emotions like love or sympathy meant nothing to Mark. Although he has an outer appearance of a human, his inner self was so detached from the physical world.
With a blink of an eye, lunch break was soon over and so was the background noise Sungjae had been providing. Lessons breezed by as Mark doodled on his worksheets to pass time and finally, came gym class. Mark would not call himself sporty but even he has a talent in something. He was great with ball games like basketball, football, volleyball and many more. Gym was the only class Mark enjoyed himself but on that specific day where Jackson had transferred over, the gym teacher had called in sick and the replacement teacher was an english teacher who told them to "form your own teams and play dodgeball without killing each other."
The geeks were naturally the target of majority of the class. Considering how Sungjae is not in the same class as Sanghyuk and Mark to share the load of constant attacks, made it worst. Mark had been doing a fine job of standing his own, dodging and hitting but Sanghyuk was having a tougher time due to his slow reflexes. While dodging and picking up a ball, Mark's eyes flicked over to Sanghyuk and thought apathetically, "You're going to be covered in bruises at the end of this."
Before he even finished the thought, a low voice had interupted him, "I know you're busy defending yourself, but maybe you could try to cover him too?" The voice owner, Jackson, stood in front of Sanghyuk and threw a ball straight at the opposing team, knocking one of the stronger players out. "Hey, you okay?" He threw over his shoulders as he dodged a ball.
Sanghyuk reply could barely be heard from all the noise in the gymnasium, "Yeah." He stood up and wiped sweat off his brow, picking up a ball.
He moved away from Jackson's shadow and threw the ball, although, weakly.
"Man, that is not how you do it." Jackson commented as he ducked, "Don't just throw the ball at him, throw the ball through him!"
With Jackson on their side and a slowly improving Sanghyuk, most of their classmates started to back off from the game, flicking their middle fingers in their general direction.
"ing s," Jackson muttered in between pants and threw a ball into the cage where it belonged.
"Nice observation," Sanghyuk provided as he rubbed his bruises. "Nice throwing, Tuan."
With an unexpected compliment thrown in his direction, Mark did not know what to say so all he did was nod.
"So, Tuan?" Jackson asked as he plucked at the front of his shirt in an attempt to cool down.
"Mark. Mark Tuan." He somehow managed to get it out with a straight face without tripping over his words.
