DecisionThat day, I went to her house for a dinner. She lived alone, it was a small house she has rented for years. Her parents were in America, so they left her alone in Korea but they never forget to give monthly allowance to her. I wonder if her parents ever come back here again.
Jiyeon was preparing food. A pot was bubbling, and the air was filled with the smell of grilled fish. “There’s a beer in the fridge,” she said with a glance in my direction. “Have a seat while I finish this.” I took a can and sat at the kitchen table. “I should have this done in ten minutes,” she said. “Can you stand the wait?”
“Of course I can,” I said.
“Get good and hungry then, I’m making a lot.”
I sipped my beer and focused on Jiyeon as she went on cooking, her back to me. She worked with quick, nimble movements, handling no fewer than four cooking procedures at once. Over here she tasted a boiled dish, and the next second she was cutting board, rat-tat-tatting, then she took something out of the fridge and piled it in a bowl and before I knew it she had washed a pot she had finished using. I watched in awe.
“Let me know if there’s something I can do,” I said, just in case.
“That’s okay,” said Jiyeon with a smile in my direction. “I’m used to doing everything alone.” She finally settled everything and arranged the food on plates.
Jiyeon’s cooking was far better than I expected. “This is great,” I said with my mouth full.
“Okay, tell me the truth now,” Jiyeon said. “You weren’t expecting my cooking to be very good, were you – judging from the way I look?”
“Not really,” I said honestly.
“Leave the food aside, I want to show you something.” Her face was brimmed with a smile as she dragged me to a room, it was full of instruments – you name it: piano, bass, acoustic and electric guitars and a set of drum – she has it all. She has all the musical instruments accessories, it amazed me, really. I have never seen a girl like her that has so much interest in music, I mean like, I have met other girls and they were all bubbly acting all cute – she’s different. She treasured music as much as I did. Music has connected us, therefore I shall thank music for that.
“I never knew a girl like you like drums?”
“I play drums to release stress. But I’m major in bass.” She said calmly.
“Nice guitar you have here.”
“That’s a gift from my dad, he’s a guitar freak. We have a lot of guitars in our home at America. I should take you there, some time.”
“Sure,” I nodded, giving her a smi
