Know Your Characters: Korean Vowels Part 2- Doubles
Learning Korean and Hangeul (SuJu Style)Now that I am caught up with my other fics (for the time being), I figured it was time to update this, so....
Welcome to the second half of our lesson, "Know Your Characters: Korean Vowels Part 2- Doubles"! This is where we are going to focus on learning the Vertical Double Vowels, the Horizontal Double Vowels, and the vowels that are both Horizontal + Vertical.
Our special guest for today is none other than... Drum roll please...
Kim Kibum!
Take a look at the killer smile! But don't stare too long; we have vowels to learn. Besides, I guarantee you'll see plenty more of that smile as we continue. ;D
Double Vowels:
Before we dive right into our double vowels, there is a little information that we have to understand first. Anyone ever hear of the word "diphthong" before? (And no it has nothing to do with underwear. -_-) Simply put, diphthongs are vowels that are a little more complex and combine two different wounds to create one new sound. In our previous lesson, we learned all about the basic vowels. Today, we are going to build on those six basic vowels and add an extra little sound to it.
This may sound confusing, but just wait a moment and we'll get more into this and it should make more sense as we continue.
Let's start of with the Vertical Double vowels first.
Vertical Double Vowels:
ㅑ= ya
ㅕ= yeo
ㅐ= ae
ㅔ=e
ㅒ= yae
ㅖ=ye
ㅑ sounds like the "ya" in "yahoo".
Ex: 야구 = [yagu] baseball
양말 = [yangmal] socks
약혼자 = [yakhonja] fiancé
ㅕ sounds like the "yo" in "young".
Ex. 여자친구 = [yeojachingu] girlfriend
여보= [yeobo] term of endearment, usually between married couples
여보세요 = [yeoboseyo]! Hello! (on the phone)
ㅐ sounds similar to the "e" in "vet".
Ex: 애완동물= [aewandongmul] pet animal
애정 = [aejong] affection
ㅔ also sounds like the "e" in "vet" just like our previous example. (But don't worry! Most Koreans today can't distinguish the difference between the two sounds since they are so similar! ^^ Oh! and same goes for our next two!)
Ex. 엘리베이터 = [ellibeiteo] elevator
엘리트 = [elliteu] elite
에너지 = [eneorji] energy
ㅒ sounds like
