chapter five

Ètude

He looked over himself in the mirror, hoping he wasn't dressing too casually. He fixed his sleeves to his, white and navy striped cardigan, pushing them up to his elbow. He was unsure on whether to button up his cardigan, covering up his white shirt, or to leave it ed, he decided on the latter. He fixed his black jeans, making sure not to sag as much. He wondered what Suji was planning to wear, was she wearing a skirt? Or shorts? But he didn't care, she would look cute either way.

"Where are you going today?" His dad asked him, his dad was in the kitchen, preparing some lunch for later on in the day.

"I have a date," he revealed, unsure on how his date would react.

"Byunghun, what have I told you," his father's voice was stern, "You need to focus on school, have you applied for any universities yet?"

"Dad, I know, I got it," he looked down.

"Is it the piano girl? Haven't I told you to stop spending time with her?"

"Her name is Suji, I'm going now," he said abruptly, not caring or listening to what his father said about her next. His father had been nagging him lately about her, how she was too good, or that she's just around because she feels bad for you. But he knew that wasn't the case, he was thinking she cared for him, a lot; he also felt the same.

He was too early, but so did she. After he arrived, she did five minutes later as well. She was wearing black pants as well, a tee shirt listing different major cities, and a grey jacket. She had dressed casual and comfortable. They were at Daehan Cinemas, Byunghun had chosen the place to go to.

"Are we going to watch a movie?" She asked as they entered the theater, heading straight for the elevators.

"No, we are going to the eighth floor," he smiled, but she felt anxious.

He pressed the eighth floor button quickly, the doors closed, leaving the two alone. He breathed out heavily, not sure what to say. This was his first date, he wondered is she had been on any dates with guys in America. When they arrived to the eighth floor he watched her expression change to one of awe.

"This is known as Sky Rose Garden," he came in closer to her, his hand closing around her own, he walked her up to the lady in the front, who was seating some people. "It's a cafe."

She looked around, taking in all the roses, the different colors, and the arraignments. She was sure she had never seen anything beautiful as this.

She looked around where they were sitting, she had a clear view of a wall of flowers, which Byunghyun had his back to. "Is it okay if I take a picture of you?" She asked him, he seemed a bit surprised at first, but agreed. She took out a white polaroid camera, adjusting the settings, she raised the camera to her face. She couldn't help but think how the contrast was between Byunghyun's dark black hair and the red roses was winsome. She took the picture, the flash going off, shocking him a little due to the brightness. The picture came out, but she placed it on the side to develop, just as the waitress came up and asked for their drink order.

"I'll have a taro milk tea," she thanked the waitress, she watched Byunghun still decide for a minute before he settled with an almond milk tea.

"How's your mom?" He asked her as they looked over the breakfast menu the waitress left.

"She's busy, I haven't seen a lot of her actually," she bit her lip, she realized she didn't know too much of his parents. "How about your parents?" She hesitated.

"My dad is doing fine, he's being strict that's all," he shrugged, she noticed he didn't mention his mother.

"Strict?"

"You know, since I'm a third year, he's kind of putting the pressure on me about colleges and graduation," he shrugged yet again.

She had almost forgotten that he was a third year, that in nine months she wouldn't see him at school anymore, "Do you know where you want to go?"

"I haven't decided, I think maybe out of the country?" He questioned, unsure.

She nodded, trying to let it not spoil her mood.

"Have you decided what you're gonna eat? I might just get crepe."

"I was looking at the croissants, they look really delicious," she looked down at the menu, "I actually don't think I'm hungry," she admitted.

They talked a little more, about their times in America, where he revealed he lived in Los Angeles, and that he wanted to go back. That he was more comfortable there than over here, she couldn't help but agree.

He wasn't too surprised when he heard that she had come from New York. She had gone to a music school but left to come here with her mom than continue over there.

"My dad stayed there," she began, "My parents, they might be getting a divorce, that's the reason why we moved here so suddenly. My mom actually..." she paused, "She cheated on my dad, he told her that he didn't want to see her face around anymore."

"Isn't that a little too harsh?" He took a sip of his drink, he could relate a little with the mom issues but in his case, it was with his father.

"It wasn't the first time, he was fed up with it," she croaked, "I have a little resentment towards her, she's my mom but she broke our family apart. I can't even go back to my dad, when my dad bought my mom's plane ticket, he bought one for me too."

"And here I thought you were perfect," he admitted that a little embarrassed.

"Aren't we all far from perfect?"

He paid for their drinks when they left, they ended up walking around, and finally ended up at her house. She invited him in, and of course, they ended up in the piano room, where he told her he had something to play for her.

She recognized the intro, Love Dream, that was what he was playing. It sounded different, it was his emotion being put in, that's what made it sound different. She began to feel lighthearted.

He stopped playing in the middle, she could feel his breath shake, he was nervous. So was she.

"Suji, I-I like you, a lot," he stuttered, "Let's become serious," his voice shook.

She looked over at him and sighed.
