Ravi stood outside, the rain soaking him completely. Not long before, N had tried to convince him to come back inside but he’d refused. The older had just shrugged, muttering that he had tried, and went back inside the apartment building. Maybe he understood Ravi’s reasoning for being outside, or maybe he just didn’t care anymore. Couldn’t say he blamed him, Ravi didn’t give much of a crap about most of the others and how they dealt with their past either.
It wasn’t like they were really friends anyway. None of them had even seen each other before they were captured and locked up in those god forsaken cages. Ravi had been the first – he hated admitting that – and then came Hongbin. They had only been there a few months when Leo joined them, followed by N a few weeks later. About two months later, Ken was put into the cage between Ravi and Leo. The last to join the group of tortured vampires was Hyuk, the youngest. The poor kid had only been turned a few weeks prior to being captured, so the others had front row seats to his adjustment to being a vampire.
At the time, that had been the worst torture for them – for Ravi. Watching Hyuk, a pure and innocent soul, slowly lose his mind to his thirst, weakening because he wasn’t getting enough of the crimson liquid, had been a painful experience for them all. Leo and N had tried their best to give him some of their blood rations, but more times than not their attempts failed. By the time the humans torturing them realized Hyuk needed more blood, the young vampire was almost dead. Apparently, they couldn’t let one of their ‘test subjects’ die, so they’d started giving Hyuk enough blood. They’d even let him stay in the same cell as Leo for a few weeks because he’d become too weak to feed himself.
“Hyung!” Ravi started, starting to turn seconds before Hyuk crashed into his side.
“Hyuk,” he blinked his X eyes – a by-product of the torture he’d experienced – in surprise, “you’re back.”
“Yeah,” Hyuk smiled, “Leo hyung tossed her out a window. She probably broke her neck in the fall. Or maybe one of the shards of glass cut really deep and she bleed to death. I smelled a lot of blood.” Maybe if Ravi wasn’t so messed up himself, hearing the youngest say something like that with a smile would have freaked him out.
“Hyuk,” Leo called, making his way to the pair, holding an umbrella over his head to shelter himself from the rain, “let’s go inside.”
“Alright,” Hyuk grinned, turning away from Ravi to look at Leo, “I’ll be right there.”
Leo nodded, handing Hyuk the umbrella before walking over to the front doors of the building. From the corner of his eye, Ravi watched as Leo stepped just inside the door before stopping and turning to face the two outside. Ravi almost rolled his eyes, but it wasn’t like he’d let Hyuk out of his sight either if he was in Leo’s shoes.
“You should go inside,” Ravi said, turning his attention back to what he had been doing before; thinking of the past, “You’ll get cold out here.”
“I’m already cold,” Hyuk laughed, pressing the palm of his hand against Ravi’s cheek, “see? It’s part of being a vampire, hyung.”
“But you can get sick,” Ravi pointed out, glancing at the younger, “so you need to go in.”
“What about you?” Hyuk frowned ever so slightly, “you’ll get sick, too.”
“Not really,” Ravi shrugged, “they didn’t mess with my health the way they did with yours.”
“Right,” Hyuk nodded, looking down. Ravi frowned slightly, feeling guilty about bringing up those days with Hyuk.
One of the ‘tests’ that had been run on Hyuk had damaged the part of Hyuk’s brain that handled memories. He only retained only a handful of memories from his human days and even less from his days as a test subject. Maybe that was why he was so cheerful in comparison to the others who remembered everything that had been done to them. Anyway, making Hyuk remember those days always made him sad and they all hated to see him upset.
“Let’s go in,” Ravi said, taking Hyuk’s hand and leading him to where Leo was waiting.
