ARRANGED
Description
All my life has always been planned out for me, I never had any say in it. I didn’t get to complain when my parents decided to get divorced, or when my mother decided to remarry a British man and move to England when I was five. I didn’t have any say when I was enrolled into a posh boarding school in London, and no one ever listened when I cried that I was being bullied. I didn’t get to decide which collages I wanted to apply for and everyone just laughed when I said I’m afraid of blood when they enrolled me into medical school. And now when I’m nineteen, a legal adult, I have no choice but to comply when my father sent me a one way plane ticket to Korea.
All my life has always been planned out for me. Every little thing has always been arranged by others; but I, being the proper daughter that I am, have never complained…but this? THIS is too much! I never thought that the person I would fall in love with and marry would be arranged for me too…
Foreword
“We’re on the verge of bankruptcy” My father says.
“But I…” I plea.
“You don’t have any other choice. You’re the heir to the Jee Company and that has some responsibilities.”
“But father…” I try.
“All your life you’ve done nothing but spend money but do you know where that money comes from? Do you know how much I’m paying each term for your studies?”
I want to shout at him. To tell him I never wanted to go to Medical school. That it was his and my mother’s dream, not mine! That I never wanted to go to a grade one college that costs £40000 a semester! That I never wanted those things…that I never wanted their money. All I ever wanted was a life…a life where I can make my own decisions…a life where I can live for myself not for anyone else. But what can I say? What can I do to make them listen to me?
“I don’t want to hear any more excuses.” He says as he looks at the papers on his desk, already bored with me “Mr Do is my good friend and the only person who is willing to help our company in this hard time…all he asks for in exchange is for you to marry his only son, Kyungsoo. And you WILL do it, do you hear me Jee Ae-Lin?”
I flinch at his use of my Korean name. I hate it when people use it. My name is Allison, it has been ever since he threw me out of his house and this country with my mother fourteen years ago. But now after all this time, he calls me back and asks, no demands me to do what he wants like nothing has changed, like I’m still his daughter.
I want to scream and shout but what can I do? My whole life has always been arranged for me…I guess my marriage is just one more thing…
