Tao couldn’t help but let out a dry laugh through his tears. Even though he couldn’t see him, Tao could swear he could feel the smile on the older’s face. He could just imagine the boy’s eyes that would say I’m cool right?

There was another silence before Kris spoke again.

“Are you in my bed?”

“No!” Tao quickly lied but a little too defensively. He heard the other make a clicking sound as if nagging him but he was sure Kris was smiling.

“It’s ok. You can sleep there tonight but tomorrow use your own bed ok?” The thought suddenly hit Tao that if he didn’t sleep in the other’s bed that it would be empty. He felt the tears coming back. He heard Kris sigh on the other end of the line. There was another stretch of silence before the older boy spoke again. “Please stop crying.” His voice sounded broken and soft. Tao recognized it. Kris was about to cry too.

“Come back.” Tao whimpered. Kris coughed to clear his throat and spoke more clearly.

“Go to sleep. I’m hanging up now.”

Tao felt panicked and he wasn’t sure why he said it, he just knew he didn’t want this to be the last time they talked. That’s why he called out to the leader in a stressed voice.

“Call me again tomorrow!” There was a silence and Tao wondered if the other had already hung up. “Ge?” Tao asked curiously. The silence continued. Tao cleared his throat and spoke once more. “Please.” He heard the other give a soft laugh across the line.

“You can call me if you’re alone.” The way Kris spoke was so soft and warm that it made Tao’s heart race. It was like a whisper. Tao couldn’t help but smile.
