Part 4

One Wish

The mild yet warm wind softly caressed Sungmin’s face as he walked outside his apartment. He turned to lock the door and check if it’s securely locked before heading down the stairs. There’s a huge tug on his heart as he take one step downwards.

The weather was the same as how he feels—gloomy and blue. The clouds are in a shade of gray, giving warn for an upcoming rain. Each and everyone on the streets are on hand for bringing an umbrella for themselves.

He made a faint smile.

Love is like the rain, sometimes it comes with a warning and sometimes it doesn’t and when it comes… you can’t avoid it everytime… so might as well enjoy it once in a while.

It was what Yesung said one day when they were on their way home and it began to rain. Yesung pulled his hands, dragging him away from the shelter. There was a goofy smile on his older’s brother’s face, as they were gradually drench by the cold rainfall and Sungmin couldn’t help but smile back. The chill was nothing compare to his brother’s warm smile a they both run under the rain.

Sungmin, once again made his daily silent wish—that kind of wish surrounded with big impossibilities—that somehow he’ll be able to see that goofy yet warm and gwntyle smile under that cold abundant rain.

“Sungmin?” His thoughts were interrupted when he saw Cho Kyuhyun who happens to be exiting a certain store.

Sungmin’s thoughts were clattered for awhile when he stared at Kyuhyun’s mysterious deep eyes. His chest was swiftly clenched in an aching yet sweet manner. His belly swell in emptiness that even butterflies flew freely inside.

“K-kyuhyun.” Sungmin failed in containing his self to stammer in front of the young man.

Silently they both walked towards each other and meet halfway. Sungmin brushed off those strange and invading feelings he have as he tried so hard to act normal in front of Kyuhyun.

“You should try adding hyung when you call my name.” Sungmin reminded, making a false sign of irritation.

Kyuhyun made an almost silent chuckle. Sungmin thought that the sound of his chuckle was too superb to hear that it echoed through his ears.

“I like it that way, Sungmin.” Kyuhyun said.

Sungmin smiled, a silent agreement. He also likes the way. How Kyuhyun would slip his name under his breath. It gives him chills in the spine and a sprinkle of warmth in his heart.

“Where are you going?” The younger man asked curiously as he scanned Sungmin from head to toe.

Sungmin fidgeted for a while, he slightly bite the back of his lips and his toes curled—silently uttering a silent gratitude he was on his closed shoes. He was wearing a black suit and for the first time he can’t sense a single confidence in his self.

“I’m visiting Yesung.” He quickly answered when Kyuhyun finished scanning him.

Kyuhyun nodded. “Can I come?” He offered and Sungmin was slightly surprised. “I’d like to meet this brother of yours who seems to be someone who is so nice based on your stories.”

Sungmin can’t suppress his giggle. “ I will let you come even if you don’t throw him those unrealistic compliments.”

The younger man shook his head slightly. “I’m trying to be nice to dead people.”

“You don’t have to throw compliments at him; he likes it so much he sometimes gets full of himself.” Sungmin muttered placing a wide smile on his face, with the thought of Yesung’s goofy smile.

They both started to walk down to the nearest bus stop.

“He does?” There was curve of smile that slowly formed on Kyuhyun’s face. “Ryewook, likes hearing compliments too. That kid was never humble.”

Sungmin looked up and there was an ache on his chest as he saw that reminiscing smile on Kyuhyun’s face. Such smile who’s only meant for Ryeowook.

“But you love him.” The words came out in an unrecognized pain inside Sungmin’s heart.

Kyuhyun stayed silent.

“I have to visit a doctor one of these days.” Sungmin blurted out changing the subject. He doesn’t want to talk about Ryeoowok. Not that person who makes Kyuhyun suffer, not that person who’s behind Kyuhyun’s saddest smile and definitely not that person whom Kyuhyun loves so much. All of those are no one but Ryeowook.

Kyuhyun stared at him, his eyes narrowed and his eyebrows were furrowed. “Are you sick?” The worrying tone made Sungmin’s heartbeat, thump one second ahead from normal beating.

Sungmin shook his head. “I just decided to get a cardiac check up.”

They had finally reached the bus stop and they both decided to talk a sit under the shelter.

“Something’s wrong with your heart?” Kyuhyun spoke as they settle and comforted their selves on the bench.

Sungmin bit his lips and nodded.

“You should visit as soon as possible.”

“Yeah. There are times when I feel it would stop beating, then it would thump in a horsy manner.”

“Horsy manner?” Kyuhyun said in amusement.

“Dugdug dugdug dugdug.” Sungmin imitated the sound of a running horse.

Kyuhyun laughed and Sungmin felt warm again. He wished Kyuhyun would always laugh like that.

“Ryeowook said he felt that way when I’m with him.” Kyuhyun said and there was a grin on his face while staring at Sungmin whose eyes are wider than usual and his face turned crimson.

“It’s not like that!” Sungmin exclaimed. Too late to take back and he sounded so defensive.

Kyuhyun laughed. “I know. I just remembered Ryeowook.”

You always do. He mentally stated, wondering where does the bitterness of his words came from.

The bus came at that moment.

The trip lasted for less than three hours and Sungmin did have to endure all those palpitations of his heart and nerves each tine Kyuhyun would be near to him. He also has to endure that aching tug on his heart everytime he mention Ryeowook, which he always do, from the duration of their entire trip.

------

“Sungmin visits you?” Ryeowook shifted his eyes from Sungmin and Kyuhyun to Yesung who is happily practicing some techniques on how to fly with his little wings. Ryeowook wonder when will he grow his wings too like Yesung.

Yesung started to chant cheerfully when he felt his feet started to drift away from the floor but then after a few seconds he fell down, first and he winced in pain as he rub his now sore .

“Why do you seem to be surprise?” Yesung asked, deciding to rest from his flying practice, he joined Ryeowook and sat beside him to watch over Sungmin and Kyuhyun.

“Kyuhyun never visits me.” Ryeowook sounded sad as he lace his fingers together.

“Sungmin visits me on my birthday.” Yesung declared as he stared at his brother longingly.

Ryeowook’s face lightened. “It’s your birthday?” He sounded a little surprised and excited.

Yesung nodded innocently wondering why was Ryeowook suddenly excited.

“You didn’t tell me.” He smacked Yesung’s shoulder.

“Ouch!” Yesung whined as he rubs his right shoulders. “What are you doing!?”

“We should celebrate.” Ryeowook seems to be excited and Yesung couldn’t help but smile. It’s the first time seeing Ryeowook that lively. Well, ever since he entered heaven, Ryeowook was all grumpy and sad.

“What is it about birthdays?” Yesung asked as his eyebrows partially creased.

“It’s the day you were born. The day you were given to the world, to your family, to Sungmin.” Ryeowook explained gleefully.

Yesung stared at Ryeoowok fondly. Admiring the flickering anticipation in his eyes.“I was born first before Sungmin.” Yesung reminded.

“Whataver. Do they have cakes in heaven?” Ryeowok asked.

“You’re the first one to ask for a birthday celebration in heaven.”

Ryeowook pouted. “Let’s ask him to make a cake for you. Do you like chocolate cake?”

Yesung thought for a while. “What do you recommend?”

“I love cakes. All of them” Ryeowook said. Then maybe we could ask for all of them.”

“Is that possible?”

“Nothing is impossible to him you know.”

“Okay let’s ask him then.” Ryeowook excitedly stood up and pulled Yesung’s wrist.

“Are you serious?” Yesung chuckled.

“Do I look like joking?” Ryeowook stopped for awhile and began to walk again. “Birthdays are something we shouldn’t miss every year. I wish Kyuhyun would visit me on my birthday too.”

Yesung smiled fade.

Kyuhyun again huh? He mentally muttered.

Yesung wonder when will the time come when Ryeowook could accept that there’s something more than loving Kyuhyun? When will he realize that he died because he was meant for someone else.

He wondered when his dumb brother will realize that he was sickly in love with Kyuhyun. And when will Kyuhyun move on from Ryeowook?

He wondered those things every single day in heaven. Just when will everything be in their right places?

Sometimes, some people’s eyes are widely open and yet they’re blind… so blind to see what’s ahead because they keep their heart shut.

------

Sungmin along with Kyuhyun started to pay respect in Yesung’s grave as they reach the place. There was a strong wind that blew away and the clouds are a little darker than before.

“Hyung! Yesung-ah.” Sungmin cheerfully called out his brother as look down on his grave. “Happy birthday.” He greeted.

Kyuhyun stared at Sungmin and back to the grave, a little surprised.

“I didn’t brought I cake.” Sungmin said as he pulled his bag in front to get something. “Tada!” Then he brought out two figurines of turtle and put them beside the grave.

--

“What’s with turtles?” Ryeowook asked Yesung as he gave him a plate of chocolate cake.

Yesung took the plate. “I used to have two turtle pets but when I got sick we need to donate them at the zoo.” He shortly explained.

Ryewook’s eyes widened. “Turtle? Of all pets in this world? Why turtle?”

Yesung just shrugged. He himself has no idea why he bought turtle for a pet.

---

“I know you miss your pets. They miss you too. In fact I visited them a few days ago and guess what hyung? Ddangkoma got married 2 weeks ago! Isn’t that great? I hope you got married too, hyung. I hope you had a longer time to live and maybe you could meet that guy you met in the bookstore again.” Sungmin’s tears started to fall like a river flow in the verge of a storm.

Kyuhyun stayed silent. His heart felt a little heavy seeing Sungmin cry. Yet, he remained standing still behind Sungmin, letting his silence be the comfort on Sungmin’s mourning heart.

“Then when you do I hope you’ll have more time to get to know him and more time to spend your time with him, to fall in love with him,t o save up the courage to confess and to be with him. I just wished you have more time hyung.” Sungmin sniffed and cleared his throat.

--

Yesung sniffed.

“You must be touch.” Ryewook tap his shoulders for comfort.

“I’m just too happy my dear Ddangkoma got married. I wish I was there to see the wedding.” Yesung sniffed again. Ryeowook was speechless for a moment but when he regained back his mentality he smacked Yesung’s head.

“You! Heartless turtle maniac.” He hissed.

There he thought he was touched by his younger brother’s words.

---

Sungmin wiped his tears using his palms. “I’m bringing someone with me if you had noticed.” Then Sungmin turned to Kyuhyun.

Kyuhyun took a few steps forward.

“He’s my friend. He said you’re nice even if he hadn’t met you yet and I think he was quite nice to say you’re nice.” Then he chuckled.

Sungmin looked up to Kyuhyun and he slightly nodded.

“Yesung-shii. I heard a lot of things about you. Your brother seems to be mean but he was nice. I’m glad you’re done tolerating this idiot.” Kyuhyun smiled and he stared at Sungmin who was now pouting.

“I didn’t know it was your birthday. I should’ve brought something. But you don’t like cakes?”

---

Yesung choke out the bits of cake out of his mouth.

“You don’t?” Ryeowook exclaimed, sounding accusingly.

Yesung looked guilty. “How would he know? He never met me Ryeowook.” He defensively said. “Oh come on, let’s hear your ex lover’s speech.”

---

“My Ryewook loves cakes a lot. I hope you had met him in heaven.” Kyuhyun had a longing smile on his face.

“He must have.” Sungmin assured. “Who knows they might be celebrating Yesung’s birthday right now.”

“Must be eating cakes.” Kyuhyun said.

“But Yesung hates cakes.”

---

Ryeowook glared at Yesung. “You liar!” Ryeowook said furiously. “Give me that.” Trying to get the plate from Yesung.

Yesung backed away for a little. “No! I like it now.”

But Ryeowok was insistent.

“Hey hey. Kyuhyun was saying something about you.” Yesung said and that was the time Ryeowook stopped.

---

“Yesung-sshii, I hope you can have the heart to tell Ryeowook I still can’t visit his grave right now.” Kyuhyun said.

Sungmin stayed silent as he listened.

---

“Kyuhyun-ah, why?” Ryeowook whispered.

--

“You haven’t yet visited his grave?” Sungmin asked in behalf of Ryeowook’s silent plead for an answer.

“It’s hard seeing him like that. The last time I saw him, he was pail and lifeless. He was not breathing. That picture of him made me broke into ashes. And seeing him again, being like this… a grave… buried six feet under? I’m afraid to face what will come.” Kyuhyun answered his voice is faltered towards the end.

Sungmin saw the reflection of his self way back those times when Yesung died and he had to fight the battle he started with his older brother alone. It was crucial. The twinge of losing someone who means a lot to you makes every point no sense at all and sooner after fighting the poignant feeling, you see yourself lost in such way wherein illogical thinking arrives within.

He got the point. But Sungmin’s point was, Kyuhyun was never alone in the battle of lost and he hates the thought that Kyuhyun was not fighting at all. Kyuhyun couldn’t even lift his long legs to take a step forward and there’s no one to blame—not Ryeowook—but Kyuhyun himself.

Precisely, Kyuhyun was afraid but certainly not afraid to see Ryeowook in a different form. He was rather afraid to uproot. He was weak to accept that Ryeowook was gone. Because for Cho Kyuhyun, Ryeowook was not dead. Not dead in his heart and Sungmin is aching inside when he realize that Kyuhyun refuses to unleash those agony. He’s depriving his self to look forward, missing the rest of his life looking back to that person who was gone… long gone.

--

“Must have been hard for him.” Yesung commented before taking one bite of cake inside his mouth.

Ryeowook sighed. “It’s hard for me too!”

“But you said you’re ready!”

“I did. And Am I not allowed to change my mind?” Ryeowook retorted.

Yesung sighed. “You’re just making it hard for the both of you. Just wish!”

Ryeowook stuffed a big size of cake on his mouth.

“Make a wish and grow your wings.” Yesung advised.

--

Dark gray clouds had surrounded the whole place and Sungmin looked up welcoming the chill of the wind fanning his face.

“It’s going to rain.” He murmured and so it did.

The rain started to pour in profusion.

“We got to get going.” Kyuhyun half shouted. The rain is getting heavier than it seems and Sungmin nodded.

“We’re soaking wet already!” Sungmin giggled. “Let’s enjoy the rain while it last.” Changing hgis mind about escaping the outburst of the sky.

Kyuhyun shook his head in disagreement. “I don’t want neither of us getting sick.” He grabbed Sungmin’s wrist and pulled him for a run.

Sungmin stared at Kyuhyun’s gentle grip around his wrist. The unfamiliar touch was digging into his whole senses.

“I used to think that raindrops are dead stars falling down the surface of the earth.” He muttered as they kept going on their tracks.

Kyuhyun looked back at him. “I can’t imagine the amount of wishes a storm contain.” Kyuhyun joked.

“But they’re dead.” Sungmin reasoned.

“But they’re still stars. Starts are stars. Stars grant wishes don’t they say? Dead star, falling star or just plain stars are still stars that grant wishes. Don’t deny them the only thing they can do for the silly humans who believes in wishing upon a star.” Kyuhyun said and Sungmin stop walking, releasing his hands from Kyuhyun’s grip.

Kyuhyun stared at Sungmin whose hands are tightly clasped together on his chest and his eyes are firmly close.

“What are you doing? It’s raining. We need to hurry up and reach the shelter.” Kyuhyun sounded amuse and urgent.

“Shhh.” Sungmin hushed. His eyes are still firmly closed and the heavy rain dropping against his body and suit. “I’m trying to make a wish from the dead stars because I can’t deprive them the only thing they can do for some silly person like me who believes in wishing upon a star.”

Kyuhyun sneered. “You are very unpredictable.”

Sungmin slightly opened his right eyes, peaking at Kyuhyun. “If I saw this moment coming I would’ve brought my wish list.”

“Okay. Okay. Make your wish a little faster.” Kyuhyun sounded defeated.

Sungmin made did what was told. Impossibilities still surrounded his silent wish and yet he saw a glimpse of hope in it. There was. He can feel it and its coming.

As Sungmin opened his eyes, they were welcomed by that same goofy yet warm smile. The smile was familiar. The only difference was the warmth it gave him inside was a little different. Something that flickered making his heart wavered.

The smile didn’t come from Yesung. It was from Kyuhyun. Two different people, one same smile and millions of two opposite tingling feeling. Kyuhyun’s smnile made him lost for a second or two. Never in his life have he ever thought that he’d ever see that kind of smile that will make him scattered all over he was unable to making a competent comprehension of his thoughts.
