Her steps where light as she strode  through the night with little light steeping through the canopy trees beneath the full moon that rose above the cloudless sky.

Her silky black hair was caught up by the wind as she distinctly heard the sounds of her pursuers slowly fading into the night. 

She had been running for quite some time as she carried her somewhat heavy kimono against the cold hash autumn wind. Her eyes were heavy and her breathing became haggard, but she wouldn’t dare to stop....

It was now or never. The girl thought.

She then came to a stop at the base of the stairs going up to the temple. A temple she often went with her father during festivities to offer up prayer to the dead, which includes her mother.

She gritted her teeth at the painful memory of her mother.

If only her mother was still alive, then maybe she wouldn’t have to be in this predicament. The girl closed her eyes as tears were threatening to fall.

Maybe they would still be happy, maybe her family would still be....

No. She shouldn’t hold on to such fantasies. She needed to accept the fact that her mother is dead and that life is cruel as it is unfair.

With a heavy breath she wiped her tear-stricken face and stared at the stairs before her leading up to the Torii (Japanese gate). She distinctly recalled what the villagers used to say about the spirit that resides in the temple.

“The legend goes that if you climb the sevemty seven steps leading up to the temple, counting each step aloud bearing your deepest desire, the seventy eight step will magically appear and the spirit will grant your wish...in exchange for something.."     

....the seventy ninth step...

“One... two....three...." She began counting.

"27...28...29..." She closed her eyes.

"45... 46....47....48..."

With each step the wind blew hard, like an omen that is saying that there was somethikng else waiting at the end.

"76......77......" She said out loud taking a moment to swallow the lump on . The wind continued to blow hard, leaves ruslted beneath her cold feet. 

"78."

and there it was...the seventy eight step...

"Spirit....please, grant me my wish..."

"I want to get away from here...."
