Of Uncertainties and Surprises

Umma's Daughter

I'm back!! WOO!! Happy days are here again! As an apology from being on-hiatus, this chapter is longer and more detailed than the usual. I'll

say that this chapter has it all - fluff, angst, and comedy. Anyway, Enjoy!

After a few hours of spending time together, the still hyper little girl suggested that they wait for Yuri in the living room as they rest on the couch.

Jessica sat first and noticed that Yoona was staring at her lap, wondering if she can sit on it instead of the couch. She flashed a reassuring smile

and gestured at her daughter to sit on her lap in which the child willingly complied.

As few minutes slowly passed, Yoona started to fall asleep, her head rested comfortably on her mother’s chest. She adamantly tried to stay

awake, but her tired eyes betrayed her.

Jessica hummed a lullaby, careful not to wake the child up, as she gently carried her daughter upstairs to her bedroom.

Turning on the lamp on the bedside table and tucking Yoona in bed with a blanket, she sat down next to the child and stared at the sleeping face

of her daughter. The peaceful sight and the light snoring instinctively put a smile on her face.

Jessica took in the appearance of her daughter. Can so much change occur in one year? Possibly. The last time she had seen the little girl was over

a year ago, and she could distinctly remember how the child looked so identical to her father. She knew way back then that only Yoona’s fair skin

was, obviously, inherited from her. But now, to her delight, she could see the physical resemblances between her and her daughter. The way the

child’s nasal bridge had a slight convex shape and her now evident bushy eyebrows can only be traced back to Jessica. Those similarities may not

be as noticeable as what Yoona got from Yuri, but it made her feel ecstatic and proud, nonetheless.

Unconsciously, one of her hand moved to her daughter’s hair and gently brushed her fingers through its soft, black tresses. She used to do this

before to her then newborn daughter, remembering that this affectionate act was the only way to sooth the crying baby.

After she kissed her daughter on the forehead, Jessica quietly stood up and went out of the room.

Making her way back towards Yoona’s room with a pillow and a blanket on her arms, Jessica froze with shock after her eyes caught an incoming

figure ascending the stairs.

Yuri’s face flickered with surprise before her face fell serious again. “You’re still here? I thought you have gone out of our lives again,” she said,

sounding unfriendly. “Oh, what are those? You’re planning to sleep in tonight? I’m glad.” Her voice dripped with bitter sarcasm.

“Please stop,” Jessica pleaded in a hoarse whisper. She was exhausted – physically and emotionally. Another set of her husband’s heated tirades

will surely sent her spiraling down to the floor.

Yuri rubbed her temple when she saw her wife’s eyes glinted with tears. For the second time in a day, she felt something racked her inside. Guilt

perhaps? She inhaled deeply and sighed, “Fine. You can sleep on my bedroom, and I’ll sleep on the couch in the living room.”

“Actually, I-I want to sleep next to Yoona,” Jessica avoided looking in Yuri’s eyes, scared that she might’ve went out of her boundaries and have

her husband coldly reject her idea, “If you don’t mind.”

Yuri stared hard at her for a moment, looking for any hidden agenda under the request. If Jessica left her heartlessly before, she could leave just the

same now and take their daughter to Seoul with her. But given the current circumstances, her wife seemed harmless. “Sure.”

Jessica, though still a little uncomfortable, reverted her eyes to Yuri and sent her a smile of gratitude. “Thank you.”

Yuri simply acknowledged it with a faint nod before she turned to walk away.

Gazing longingly at the retreating back of her husband, Jessica murmured, “Goodnight.”

“You, too,” Yuri replied emotionlessly, not even sparing Jessica a glance.

The little girl sat on the bed as she tilted her head to the side to get a better view of the figure’s face, furrowing her brows in curiosity. Was she

dreaming? Was the figure sleeping soundly next to her just a figment of her imagination?

She moved her head closer to her mother’s face, inspecting for any bizarre features that she always found in her dreams, such as a square-shaped

mouth or triangular eyes. Extending a hand to the foot of the bed to grab her Brownie, she held onto the two paws of the dog doll and placed it on

her mother’s cheeks – rubbing them gently.

To her amazement, she heard Jessica groaned in response. It took awhile before it sunk in. She wasn’t dreaming... Her mother was truly here

with her!

“Umma!” Yoona squealed in delight and bounced on the bed, unintentionally waking her mother up.

Jessica groaned again as her eyes slowly fluttered open. Waking up and leaving her bed were her biggest pet peeves in the world. But then, she

realized that the mattress she’s laying on wasn’t really hers. Her eyes went wide open as she felt her drowsiness disappeared and was replaced

with a slap of reality that… she’s home. What greeted he
