Cold and Warm
Umma's Daughter
Yoona watched Seohyun, who was busy serving a tea for Keroro and Brownie. They were having a tea party, but she was never fond of the
tasteless liquid. Silently, she got up from the grass and went to the pond, holding her own cup of tea. “Hello, Mr. Fish,” Yoona whispered as she
squatted down, looking at the clownfish. “Would you like some tea?”
But Seohyun was already making her way to the mischievous Yoona. “Yoongie, don’t give your tea to Mr. Fish. Drink it,” she reprimanded, her
hands on her waist.
“But I don’t want to. It tastes yucky,” Yoona grunted in disgust.
Seohyun’s lips formed into a sad frown, her eyes started to water.
Yoona let out a sigh. She never liked seeing the younger girl sad. “Okay, I’ll drink it.” Standing back up to her full height, she brought the cup up
near to her lips. “But you have to give me a kiss after.”
Hearing the older child’s words, Seohyun broke into a wide grin and nodded her head.
Yoona rubbed her hands around the cup to know the temperature of the tea. It wasn’t that hot. She drew a deep breath and quickly chugged down
the liquid, grimacing in the process. “I finished it!” She yelled in delight, beaming triumphantly. “Hyunnie has to kiss Yoongie now.”
Seohyun smiled and leaned forward to give the older girl a kiss on the cheek.
From afar, standing on the porch, two adults were watching the children.
“Aigoo… Look at your kid - grinning like a Cheshire cat,” Taeyeon sneered as she briefly pointed at Yoona. “What a ert.”
Yuri looked at the shorter woman and scoffed in disbelief. “Aigoo… Look who’s talking?” She mocked, using a similar tone as Taeyeon. “What
my daughter has done was harmless compared to yours when we were young.”
“Nonsense! I was the most well-behaved kid in this village,” Taeyeon said in a pompous voice.
“Yeah, right…” Yuri rolled her eyes. “Weren’t you that erted kid who flipped other girls’ skirt up to see the color of their , and then
ran away?” She reminded with a smirk.
Taeyeon groaned at the memory. She couldn’t even count how many slaps she got because of that peculiar childhood habit, but it was fun while
it lasted. “Argh! You and your kid repulsed me.”
Yuri laughed. “By the way, it’s been two months now, but Sooyoung’s still M.I.A?”
Taeyeon shrugged. Their bachelorette best friend has gone to only God-knows-where. “Well, with all the money she’s got, I think she’s enjoying
the time of her life.”
“Lucky her… When she comes back, she’d be living in town to run her parents’ business.”
On the carpet floor, little Yoona was immersed in coloring a picture of Minnie Mouse from her coloring book. She ran her eyes over the
scattered crayons around the book, and frowned when she saw the color of crayon that she was looking for.
Yoona stood up and went to her father in the kitchen, who was cooking Pasta for dinner. “Appa, look.” She tugged her father’s pants and
extended her hand, showing Yuri the black crayon that was broken in half. “I can’t color Minnie Mouse with this.”
Yuri took the crayon and examined it. “Hmmm… A tape can fix it.”
The child shook her head. Her father was being frugal again. “I want a new one, appa.”
“But I can’t buy a single crayon, Yoong. I have to buy a whole set,” Yuri tried to reason, which failed as the child looked as if she was about to
tear up. She sighed in defeat. It’s no use arguing with her stubborn daughter, who’s spoiled rotten by her mother through the monthly delivery
of gifts. “Alright… But for now, you’ll have to color Minnie with a brown crayon.”
The little girl’s delighted face scrunched up in disdain. “I don’t like brown color. It’s the same color as poopy.”
*Ding dong*
The doorbell rang.
“I’ll get it, appa,” Yoona offered and skipped towards the front door, twisting the doorknob and pulling it wide open. She looked up to see the
identity of the visitor, and got the shock of her life.
The figure bent down in one knee, a wistful smile on her face.
