Sweet Talks on Coffee

Beep Beep!

A silver SUV car stopped over a side of a school’s pavement. The lady with blond hair rolled down the window and waved over to a girl who sat alone on a bench.

Seohyun was still in her uniform and she just got out from class. She was staring blankly at her fingers waiting for her unnie to fetch her but just as she heard a couple of car beeps she looked up. She smiled the moment she saw their familiar car but the moment she saw her unnie she was slightly disappointed, and then she stood up and hurried to the car.

“Unnie.” She said in a slight weak tone as she entered in the front seat and buckled her seatbelt. “Sooyoung unnie said she’ll be the one to pick me up?”

“Oh, she’s still in the agency with Fany that’s why she called me to pick you up instead, and then they told me to wait for them by the park. So, how’s school?” Hyoyeon asked as she turned the car back to the driveway.

“Uhm… not much…”

“Oh?? Jinjja?? What happened?”

“Nothing unnie…”

“Oh? Ya… Maknae ahh… I know when you’re troubled…” Hyoyeon said.

Among the soshi unnies, maknae is the closest to Hyoyeon, Sooyoung and then Tiffany comes third. But maknae usually talks to Hyoyeon and they always bond together, most of the time they go out for coffee together, they’d stroll down the streets, and maknae always gets jealous when someone is stealing her Hyoyeon unnie away. Honestly, they haven’t talked much ever since Hyoyeon started to make out with her fling Lee Joon, and it totally made maknae super ultra-jealous and distant to her. Usually unnies would always make way for maknae because they know Seohyun loves and will forever sit beside Hyoyeon on tables, on cars, on couches, etc. but they all noticed something was off between them lately and Hyoyeon sensed it too.

“Nothing is troubling me…I’m fine…” Seohyun said just as she folded her arms. I thought Sooyoung unnie will be the one to pick me up today. Aish… Why her… Seohyun thought to herself.

“Hmm, did you bring the grocery list? We’ll go do the groceries first before going to the park.”

“Neh unnie. It’s here in my phone.” Seohyun said as she waved her S4.

“Okay. We’re here in the groceries…”

Hyoyeon parked their SUV car by the open space in front of a huge grocery warehouse. The soshi always make monthly grocery here because of buy one take one, bundle sales, and cheaper prices.

“Unnie, I won’t be bringing my bag anymore okay? I’ll just bring my phone and my purse.” Seohyun said as she unbuckles her seatbelt.

Just as the two were walking together, Hyoyeon was busy tapping her phone with her left hand. Seohyun sighed. She doesn’t want to be with her Hyoyeon unnie right now simply because she’s still in a jealous and irritated mode. She sighed again and snobbishly turned her head to the other side with her chin raised up. Just as she turned her head, she accidentally jolted her left hand that lightly bounced over to Hyoyeon’s right hand.

It took Hyoyeon’s attention and she quickly turned her head towards Seohyun who was looking at the other side.

“Miahne…” Seohyun said unemotionally.

Hyoyeon just smiled. She knows maknae was in a deep jealous mode again.

“Okay, I’ll go get the trolley…” Hyoyeon said. Usually maknae enjoys groceries with Hyoyeon, and she would always volunteer to get the trolley but this time she didn’t mind and she didn’t even care. “Let’s go in…” Hyoyeon flashed their membership card over the grocery warehouse’s entrance machine. The door automatically opened then the guards inspected them for safety happy shopping.

“whoa… Hm…there’s many new things today. Oh how’s Yonghwa by the way, have he called you?” Hyoyeon asked.

“Uhm…” Maknae suddenly remembered she has a boyfriend. “No…”

“Jinjja? When was the last time he called?”

“Last decades ago…” Seohyun answered. Then Hyoyeon gave her a serious look which made her flinch a little. “Last month…” she said seriously.

“Oh…”

“I don’t know maybe he’s just busy…” Seohyun said. “Ever since he went to become an exchange student to the Philippines, at a university called College of Saint Benilde, he’s been busy with life…”

“Wow… sounds interesting…” Hyoyeon said. “I hope he’s not playing around.”

“Unnie…” Seohyun pouted and her brows even met and it created a creased line in between.

“Jinjja… I’m not joking.”

It took them more than an hour to roam around the big warehouse grocery; suddenly Seohyun came running to Hyoyeon with some stuff around her arms.

“Unnie… We forgot this…”

“What’s that?”

Seohyun gave her a bashful smile.

“Oh… nap…” Hyoyeon paused. “kins… sanitary… Is this heavy? Or regular?”

“Both.” Seohyun answered.

Just as they were about to pay for their stuff by the counter, Hyoyeon checked if they got everything they need. She counted everything and checked everything. “Unnie… It’s complete. No need to redo everything again…” Seohyun assured.

Hyoyeon nodded. “Maknae, why don’t we go grab some coffee before going to the park, like how used to?”

Maknae unconsciously smiled sweetly. But then she snapped herself and shook her head. “Ah-nee ah-nee…” She said firmly as she folded her arms.

“Awee….” Hyoyeon said as she touched maknae’s chin. “Come on…” She tickled maknae’s nose with her nose tip. It was how Hyoyeon express her affection towards Seohyun. It’s what they call the nose tip love.

“Ahraso…” Seohyun said coldly. But deep down she was jumping in glee and her heart was racing to the highest level, it was even faster than her heart rate when she is being kissed by Yonghwa. But then she stayed cool and sighed out a heavy breath to keep it calm.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Maknae… we haven’t done this for such a long time…” Hyoyeon said as they enter a coffee shop.
Seohyun smiled behind Hyoyeon. Yes… and I miss you so much… But it’s your fault if you didn’t go and whatever it is that you have been doing with your life then I guess it will still be the two of us. But noooo! You traded me with someone else… Tsss…. Seohyun rolled her eyes with all her thoughts.
The moment they reached the counter Hyoyeon browsed the menu. Her eyes lit and it was as if she doesn’t know what she’ll be getting. Three to four minutes have passed and Hyoyeon haven’t decided just yet, good thing there was no one in the line behind them.
“Unnie… It’s been… how many minutes now…” Seohyun sighed.
Hyoyeon turned to Seohyun. “I honestly don’t know what to get… it’s like I want everything in this menu…”
“Unniiee!” Seohyun looked at her weirdly. “Jinjja… I noticed lately you’ve been eating a lot, and what I mean by lately it’s not just yesterday or the other day and you’re slowly gaining weight…”
“I do???” Hyoyeon suddenly settled for a hot mocha latte.
Then the two of them sat over a warm space near the glass window. “I’ve been having a lot of cravings lately…” Hyoyeon said. “I really don’t know why…”
Seohyun didn’t mind what she said.
“So, tell me. What are you busying about lately?” Hyoyeon asked.
“Nothing much…school…homework… oh, unnie… do you think Yuri unnie is okay?” Seohyun suddenly asked.
Hyoyeon became puzzled with her sudden question. “What do you mean?”
“I don’t think she was telling the truth the other day. She apologized to me but it really hurts me. She broke her promise.”
“Hmm… I also think she was lying. But I think we should let her go for a while, I think something is bothering her and she’s not ready to tell us.”
“Not ready?? But we’re her friends/family right? Aren’t we supposed to know?”
“It doesn’t mean that way, I mean… Sometimes people just have to disconnect to connect again…I think Yuri just needs more time, and I’m sure when the right time comes, she’ll come out bravely and tell us everything that is bothering her.”
Seohyun snapped. Disconnect to connect again? Seohyun hugged herself. Hmph… We’ve disconnected but when are we going to reconnect. I miss you unnie… But at the same time I feel jealous and irritated.
“Wait, earlier you said Yonghwa hasn’t contacted you for a month right?”
“Yeah…” Seohyun said sadly. “Honestly, if you haven’t mentioned him, I almost forgot I have a boyfriend…” She said bitterly.
A lady suddenly came with their order. “One hot mocha latte, and one cookies and cream frappe to go. Enjoy!”
Just as the lady left, Seohyun held on the cold cup of her drink. Hyoyeon opened the lid of her hot coffee. Steam immediately burst out through the air. “Oh… Have you tried calling him??”
“Yeh… But never mind unnie… I’m so over him… I think I’ll just truly forget him…”
“Ah-neeyo…Don’t say such thing…” Hyoyeon said as she touched Seohyun’s hand. “Let’s go, let’s continue our discussion inside the car.”
Seohyun nodded.
“Unnie, do you think Sooyoung and Tiffany are already by the park?” Seohyun asked as they left the coffee shop and went straight to their car that was parked by the driveway.
Hyoyeon shook her head. “No, it’s just Three thirty in the afternoon…They’ll be out by another more hour.” Hyoyeon clicked the car keys to unlock the doors, and then she placed her coffee over the beverage handle near the radio buttons. Seohyun did the same before she hopped in.
“Don’t forget seatbelts.” Hyoyeon said as she buckled hers. “Ready?”
“Yeh…” Seohyun sighed. She opened her school bag and inside she found her SLR camera.
“Maknae… I know you’re mad at me…” Hyoyeon said. Her eyes glued on the road.
Seohyun suddenly cracked. She didn’t know what to say. “What are you talking about unnie?”
“You may not tell it to me straight but I can feel it. You’ve been avoiding me…”
“I AM NOT!” Seohyun answered defensively as she hugged her camera.
“No?? Really? Oh come on Seo Joohyun… I know you better than anyone…”
“No you don’t.” Seohyun finally said. Because if you do, you know what to do and you know how you will console me. Soehyun started to drink her frappe out of nervousness.
Just as the stop light turned red. Hyoyeon made sips from her coffee. “You know… I want ice cream… chocolate… or something like it…”
“You know… you’re cravings are getting pretty crazy…. Seriously unnie… you’re gaining some weight over there…”
“Awe!! Don’t say that… I am not!” Hyoyeon said worriedly. She felt slightly conscious. “But seriously… I really want some of that stuff…”
“Unnie… Why the sudden cravings?”
“I don’t know?? It feels… weird craving these stuff?...and I’d thought the coffee would do the trick but it’s not…”
The car became quiet along their way to the park. Seohyun who was facing the window was unconsciously looking at Hyoyeon by the side mirror of the car. She couldn’t help but stare at her unnie’s feature. How beautiful she was with her blond hair, her soft smile, her heart melting stares.
Why can’t I just stop this and be okay with her? No. She started it first so she should end it.
“Here we are…” Hyoyeon said. She stopped beside a pavement behind a white Camry car. “Bring your things baby.” She turned off everything and finally locked the car behind.
*tit tit* The car sounded. Seohyun double checked the door and then they walked together to the park.
“Swing!!!” Hyoyeon shouted excitingly the moment she saw the swings.
“You go ahead unnie; I’ll just take a picture of this flower first.”
“Okay.” Choding Hyoyeon went happily over the swing. She sat down by the seat like a kid and gracefully swung her legs and she was swinging lightly through the air as she enjoys her coffee.
Seohyun didn’t mind her; she firmly took pictures of the beautiful bed of flowers that she saw. According to the label by the park, the blue violet flower was actually Forget Me Not. Seohyun smiled as she looked at the photo in her SLR camera. She was contented by the results of her shots, she clicked the previous button to review her multiple shots until… She froze. Her heart melted…
She stumbled upon the old photos she took of Hyoyeon during those times of their happy days. Those moments that they’d just bake together, walk together, those times when they’d go somewhere far and just be together. All of the pictures were stolen shots of Hyoyeon and every photo seemed to tell a lot of stories. Seohyun likes to take stolen shots than taking a picture wherein people poses and are aware of it. She likes candid photos that have stories behind, something meaningful and worth keeping.
As she reviews her old photos, she smiled unconsciously, there was a photo of Hyoyeon crossing the street, a photo that she was wearing a lovely white tinted blue dress and she was playing with butterflies along with Sooyoung who was wearing a pink dress. Another photo was a tired Hyoyeon back at the café shop but even though she was tired, she managed to look beautiful, natural, and glowing.
Then she turned her head towards Hyoyeon who happily plays by the swing. She was sipping her coffee and was looking upon the white cloudy sky. Suddenly Seohyun got another idea. She bent over the bed of flowers and directed her camera upwards; she used the flowers as front background but she focused the lenses on Hyoyeon, and then…
She snatched another candid photo of Hyoyeon.
Looking at the picture reminded her of the old Hyoyeon she used to know. The sweet unnie who’d always call her, hug her, play with her, but she guessed people just change. They grow, they become someone different, they mature, and Seohyun just simply miss her old times with her.
She sighed, stood up, and went over to Hyoyeon. She sat next to the empty swing beside her unnie. She kept quiet and still.
*Hello Hello mushi mushi! Ciao ciao! Busy busy!*
“Yabuseo?” Hyoyeon answered.
“Ya, Hyoyeon ah! Tiffany and I are on our way to the park.”
“Okay!” Hyoyeon said. “Come quickly and safe, okay baby?”
“Ahraso. Bye!”
Just as Hyoyeon hanged up Seohyun looked at her. “Baby?!?!”
Hyoyeon was shocked. “Boya??”
“Why did you call Sooyoung unnie baby??” Soehyun said in a jealous tone. “I was the one who you call baby.”
Hyoyeon stood up and cooed her maknae. “Aiyoo… You’re jealous all along?” She said as she hugs Seohyun.
“I AM NO!!” Seohyun struggled. “Will you please not hug me?! JINJJA…”
But Hyoyeon won’t let go.
“UNNIIEEEE!!!” Seohyun groaned. “Put your touches away from me!” Seohyun struggled as if Hyoyeon was a big germ or bacteria. “Okay, I’ll tell you something straight. I honestly am avoiding you and I may not want to speak with you like the way we used to, no matter how many times we trace the old times and the old things that we do, it’s not working.”
Hyoyeon became shocked. She was extremely surprised the way maknae talked to her. She finally let go of Seohyun. “I’ll… Just throw this cup…” She said in a weak voice.
Seohyun felt guilty for saying such thing. She didn’t mean to say such harsh words. Her heart was breaking just as she watches Hyoyeon went to the trash bin and disposes her cup.
Hyoyeon was totally hurt. But she just ignored it and didn’t say a thing.
Seohyun stood up and disposed her cup as well. “Unnie…” She said. But Hyoyeon didn’t say word to her. “Unnie… miahneyo….”
“Ahraso…” Hyoyeon blurted. Her eyes were slightly teary but she was fighting back tears. Hyoyeon was a soft hearted type and she easily gets hurt.
From afar, a couple of girls were walking to their direction. Tiffany was holding on to Sooyoung’s arm and her face was slightly pale and it was as if she’s having some sort of discomfort.
“Hey, what’s up with you?” Hyoyeon asked Tiffany.
“I’m having cramps…” Tiffany said as she bends a little. “Ergh…”
Sooyoung laughed. “The harsh reality of being a girl right? Good thing you and I are done last two weeks ago.” Sooyoung said to Hyoyeon.
“Huh? What??? Last two week??” Hyoyeon asked. She began to think. “Wait… Last…two… ?” Then she remembered her period days were always in sync with Sooyoung, they had the same date or same week of their monthly red tide. Sometimes Sooyoung would be ahead for a day or vice versa, or same day itself.  “Omo…” Hyoyeon clasped her lips together.
“Why??” Tiffany and Sooyoung asked.
“Guys… I’m… Two weeks delay…” Hyoyeon said. She thought hard again. “No… Three if we count this week…” She placed a hand over her temples. Sh*t… Am… I?? No… Impossible…That’s just not going to happen.
“OMO!!!” Seohyun said. “Unnie… Are you?? Is it why you’ve been craving different things lately??”
Hyoyeon shook her head. “No… Impossible… He always use… protection, it can’t be…”
“It’s not enough…Hyo.” Sooyoung said.
“No… No… This is so not happening to me!!!!” Hyoyeon said hysterically.
"Wait, calm down... Breathe... Let's not jump into conclusions..." Tiffany said.
