Happily (N)ever After“Yonghwa...hey Yonghwa...wake up and eat something.”
Rubbing his eyes, he saw Yunho place a tray on the desk. Reaching onto the bed, Yonghwa shook Soojung and Sooyeon to wake them up.
“I made miso soup and rice, light enough so you can all go back to sleep afterwards.”
Yonghwa massaged the crick in his neck as his sisters blinked away their sleepiness.
“Appa, you didn’t have to bring it in here....we could have gone into the kitchen,” Sooyeon pulled herself up into a sitting position on the bed. As soon as she sat up enough, Soojung rolled over onto her sister’s legs and Sooyeon began rubbing Soojung's back out of habit.
“Soojung sit up straight and take your rice bowl. We’re just doing dinner a little unconventionally today.”
Sooyeon just reached for the offered bowl in Yonghwa’s outstretched hand, too tired to keep the conversation going. They ate quietly, the three siblings still not fully awake.
Volunteering to wash the dishes, Soojung left first while Sooyeon tried to convince Yunho she wasn’t physically unwell. “But your face is so pale, you sure you don’t want me to call Dr. Park?”
“Appa, I’ll be okay. I just need some rest and I’ll be good to go.”
Seeing their dad was draining her energy with the conversation, Yonghwa volunteered to keep a watch on Sooyeon that night just in case. Immediately agreeing, happy to stop their dad’s worrying so she could sleep, Sooyeon slid back down into her covers. Yonghwa led Yunho out to the living room to prevent any further discussion. Grabbing a pillow and blanket from his room, Yonghwa returned to his sisters’ room to find Sooyeon already asleep. Making himself comfortable by her bedside, he looked over her paler than usual face and wrapped the blankets tighter around her.
“Oppa,” Sooyeon’s voice whispered into the silence.
“You’re not asleep yet?”
“Oppa, promise. Promise me you’ll always be okay. Promise oppa?”
Looking questioningly at his sister, “What’s wrong? Tell oppa.”
“You gotta promise oppa,” her serious eyes contrasting with the slight pout she was subconsciously making.
“I promise. Now what’s wrong?”
“Hyunnie...” At the mention of the girl’s name, Yonghwa’s eyebrows shot up in surprise.
“Your best friend, Seo Joo Hyun?”
“Mm....Hyunnie, her oppa is in the hospital.”
“What?? Wait...you mean JiSeok hyung? What happened??”
“He was crossing the street and a car came out of nowhere and...” As her voice trailed off, Yonghwa lifted his hand to rub her head affectionately.
“And so you’re telling me to take care of myself, right?”
choked up, Sooyeon just nodded. “Jung Sooyeon, I made a promise to you, to myself and to omma that I would always do my best to protect you and Soojung. So to make sure you’re both okay, I have to take care of myself too. So oppa is repromising that I will protect both of my little sisters and take care of myself too. Promise.”
Smiling Sooyeon held onto her brother’s hand. “Thank you oppa.”
