Storyline:
After 10 years Donghae thought he’d moved on from his first love but as he worked as a manga editor for SM Publishing he would then encounter him again but this time Kyuhyun was courting him back for them to have their relationship back, would Donghae tell him again that he loves Kyuhyun?
It was all of a sudden someone yelled out “Cho! What the hell were you thinking?!”
It took everyone’s attention on the whole maiden department and Hae was shocked with the sudden volume, “This is the first print run! And it sold out in one day! Even if we order a second run immediately, it’ll still take ten days for it to be ready! What the hell are we going to do in the meantime?” Hae was wondering why he was being so worked up about another print run
“It was your bright idea to order a smaller print run, wasn’t it?!” Kyu spoke back at him
“Whaaat?!”
“You forget that I wanted to order more than 30,000 copies! It was your superiors who shot that particular idea down! Take it up with them, not me!” Kyu reminded him
“It’s your fault we’re in this mess because you just couldn’t grow a spine!” he strike back
“What the hell?!”
“You know that I stood up to them as much as I could, you were there!” they were screaming at each other’s face as of that time
“You’re clearly not taking this seriously!” they dropped the papers they had in their hand
“I’m not taking this seriously?! Look who’s talking!” they keep on using the same tone of voice
Hae figured it was a much tense atmosphere that was building up between them and everyone seems to fall into silence with their argument “Ah… Choi-shi did Cho-shi do something wrong?” he was then taking some books “Hmm…”
Hae was then whispering “They’re talking about this month’s book, right?”
“They did say that it would take some time to get a second print run, but if the book’s selling beyond expectations… isn’t that a good thing?” he wondered
“No. it’s actually the opposite, waiting for the second printing is going to cost us because we’ll be losing sales. Actually the editorial department tried to ask for more copies, but the financial department shot us down Cho-shi did his best to convince them otherwise, but it all fell on deaf ears, so when the book was released, we had nowhere near enough copies”
“Oh, I see. So the editorial department doesn’t get to decide for itself how many copies of the book will be printed” he explained further
This is how we decide how many books to print
· Editor – We’ve decided on the date!
o The book will be published on X day X month
o Well then, how many copies will we be printing?
Negotiation back and forth
· “No, this is too many!” – Big-wig
· “No way! This many?” – financial department
· “How about this many?” editorial department
· Final decision
· And the book’s published ( The main Goal)
“Huh? So who’s he? Someone from the production…?” they continued to whisper
“Nah, that’s SM’s famously grumpy bear, he’s from the financial department and his name is~” he was cut off by someone
“Bae” Min suddenly appeared out of no where
“Oops… did he hear us?” Siwon spoke softly and both of them looked at him but Hae had a dreaded look in his face
“I’ve never seen you before” he crossed his arms
Hae immediately stand and introduced himself “Oh, right! How rude of me! My name’s Lee Donghae. I started working here about a month ago. Please bear with me while I’m getting used to things. I look forward to working with you” he quickly complied
“Lee… I see” he acknowledged the name
“So you’re the one who’s riding on daddy’s coattails. You’re the only son of Lee Publishing’s President, right?” with shock Hae felt so devastated
“You really don’t pull your punches, do you?”
“Well, whether. Cho, make sure that something like this doesn’t happen again” he reminded
“Only if you persuade your superiors to listen to me next time” he didn’t care to look at him
“What the hell? Why did he humiliate me in front of all those people? We just met!”
“Lee, don’t let him get to you” Kyu spoke, “In my opinion, nepotism isn’t such a big deal. In the world we live in, you need all the help you can get” Cho Kyuhyun Head of the editorial department
“That’s right. It’s not a bad thing that you were born under a lucky star” Song Heechul Managing editor
“It’s kind of nice…” “Yeah, I agree. Besides, it’s kind of fun to make it your goal in life to stand on your own two feet” Henry Lau
“How…” “Yeah, besides if you’re good at what you do, it only makes sense to put you to work right away, right?” Choi Siwon
“Everyone’s got my back” “Um… thank you so much I’ll~” he was cut off my all of them
“Although… If you fail anyway, you’re no better than trash” they all spoke at the same time and as well shocked their co-workers and Hae himself
“What the hell? You don’t have to be so harsh!”
It’s been a month since Lee Donghae, 25, was assigned to the editorial department of SM publishing’s Shoujo Manga section.
“Hae… would you like a donburi, it’s yummy?” he offered
“I am so quitting”
And has he changed his mind about switching careers? Not in the least.
~~~oo0oo~~~
About a couple of minutes
~~~oo0oo~~~
“I need to take these to be mailed and then…” he was at the elevator and pressed on one of the buttons, “The door is closing”
“Wait a minute, I’m getting on too” Kyu suddenly appeared out of nowhere and it startled him
And with a fast swoop Hae ran out of the elevator, “Oops, I forgot something” he dashed off
“Hey” Kyu spoke before the elevator closed
When he heard it close he stopped his tracks “I wonder if that was a bit too obvious… I really don’t want to be along with him for even a second. After all, Cho-shi and I… even if we’re both guys, we dated for a little while ten years ago. No, even though it messed me up pretty badly, we weren’t exactly dating. I was the only one who was serious about it. It was just a huge joke to Cho-shi”
“But something’s bothering me lately, because to be honest, I can’t really remember what happened after that moment. Cho-shi told me that he didn’t mean to do me and dump me. I don’t know if he’s telling the truth. Still I’m surprised at myself. I never thought I’d be someone who could forget his first love like that”
“That was fast…” Henry wondered
“Nah, I forgot something” he found an excused
“No, that’s not it either; I guess I made myself forget precisely because he was my first love. It wouldn’t surprise me because the whole thing was such a huge shock back then. And then there’s what he said to me after we met again”
“I’m going to make you fall in love with me again” he recalled what Kyu had told him
“No way… no way…! No friggin’ way!”
“I’m not the naïve brat I used to be! Who does he think he is anyway? Man. He pisses me off!” he crumpled the pieces of paper
“I just need to avoid him outside of work, that’s right stop thinking about anything other than work, work, work, work!”
He then noticed the calendar at his desk and he noticed the days that he marked, “I wonder if Hyorin’s done yet it’s been five days since her deadline. If she’s this late, something must be up…” “Song-shi does Hyorin-sunbae usually keep to her deadlines?”
“Huh?”
“It’s just that… she’s a little late in turning in her storyboard, so I thought I’d ask you, you’ve worked with her before, right?”
“She’s not usually one to miss her deadlines, but sometimes she gets really bad artist’s block and flies off the handle” he straightened out “It’s a good idea to call her frequently and ask how she’s doing” he suggested
“Got it” he picked up the phone
“I was recently put in charge of a mangaka for the first time” “Hello?” the voice said
“This is Lee from SM publishing, I’m sorry for the calling out of the blue” “That’s not to say I’m unfamiliar with the process itself. I was in charge of quite a few writers when I worked at Lee Publishing”
“There’s just one major difference between novels and manga: pictures. In addition to the plot, there’s also the storyboard” (Note: Storyboard = The very first draft of the drawings)
“I’m just calling to ask where you are with the storyboard” he calmly said
“O-oh I’m sorry. It’s not done yet” she was panicking “I’ve got about ten more pages to go”
“According to Cho-shi, storyboards are the best way for a mangaka to express their style. And at the same time, storyboards hone an editor’s sense of what’s good and what’s not”
Numerous thuds hit his desk all of a sudden “What-what are these? Huh?” he looked at the huge pile of pages
“Storyboards, is this the first time you’ve seen any?” he placed another pile
“Oh-uh yes…” he stared at the huge pile of storyboards
“These are copies of the plot outlines, storyboards and final drafts of every story we’ve published in the past five years” he elaborated the papers he’d placed
“The final drafts with red marks are from before my time at SM and this is how I’ve my changes. Read these in one wekk, and come ask me if you don’t understand why I made certain changes” he pointed out
“What…?! I have to read all this?” he couldn’t believe
“You can’t do it?” he taunted
It got Hae pissed “N-no I’ll do my best” he snarled
“What the hell that’s what losers say! Just give it to me straight! Can you do this or not?” he teased even more
Hae slammed his hand on the pages “Of course I can do this! No doubt about it!”
“That so?” he doubtingly said
“Yeah, I let him provoke me”
~~~oo0oo~~~
The next day
~~~oo0oo~~~
“And I did it. I dead all of them even though it took me all night, I even wrote a report. Who do you take me for? I have three years’ worth of editing experience! That was probably why I got to supervise a mangaka this soon”
He then took hold of the phone and his calendar and called the author “Well then, fax me the storyboard once you’re done. If it’s the weekend, you can fax them to my home number. I won’t mind… Yes yeah, work hard!” and then dropped the line
“Looks like everything’s okay?” Heechul suddenly spoke at the side
“Yeah, it’s all coming together, I guess” he replied
“I might actually be the problem here. I wonder if I’ll know how to do all the corrections I’m supposed to do? Maybe I should get other people to read the storyboard too? That might work. But should I really talk to the others? This assignment is supposed to test my skills as an editor, after all” he disputed his thoughts about the storyboard review
Kyu glared at Hae and he turned at the sight “Cho-shi, Bae-shi’s on the line for you” Heechul called
“He wants you to go out drinking with him tonight” they all heard
“Tell him I said no”
“Please do that yourself” he raised the phone
“Bae-shi, huh…? He’s that rude man from finance who was here before, right? I don’t get it. They had a screaming match and yet they’re going out for drinks” it bothered him without him knowing
“Please just take the phone. I don’t want him to blame me for you saying no” he kept giving out the phone to him
“Dealing with him is such a drag, so no thanks” Kyu walked away
Hae took a look at his expression, “What do I care who he’s going out for drinks with? I should just concentrate on work! That’s right!” he then worked about
“It’s got nothing to do with me, so whatever”
~~~oo0oo~~~
It was getting late and everyone was leaving
~~~oo0oo~~~
“Oh Hae, are you going home?” Henry asked
“I’m waiting for a storyboard, so I’m off” he informed
“Okay see you later!” they then parted
“I hope Hyorin-sunbae’s storyboard is all done” waited for the elevator
When he heard it was the right floor he then got off and to his surprise he saw Kyu and Min talking near the doors, he quickly turned to the side to prevent them from noticing
“Wha-what are they talking about in the middle of the hall? I really don’t want to walk past them” he took a peak
“I thought they didn’t get along? Or wait, are they fighting again?” he wondered
Hae felt his heart beat when he saw Kyu laughing “Cho-shi’s laughing? He doesn’t usually do that” his heart continued on to beat wildly
He felt stupid with just looking at the both of them and he decided to march straight on “Hey!” Kyu shouted
“Aren’t you supposed to say something to your superior when you leave?” he reminded
“I’m sorry I’m leaving first!” he answered back
“I’m going out too” he killed the cigar bud
“Remember to keep the third open seriously, when are you going to hang out with me again?” he whined
“I’ve got my hands full with our crappy authors, I’ll give it some thought once I’m done proofreading” he excused
“You’re such a liar. That’s what you always say!” Min said in a higher tone “What the hell?”
“Hey, I’ve kept my words at least once” he playfully said
“Hey, I’m going to pop by later today”
“Don’t” he waved goodbye
“They actually get along really well” “I’m seriously coming over” he persists
“Seriously, don’t” he replied back
“What are they to each other?”
“So don’t go to bed before I get there! Got it? Kyuhyun!” it made Hae’s widen at the name
He then rushed his pace “He just called Cho-shi by his first name”
“So… so what…?! It’s got nothing to do with me if somebody decides to call someone else by their first name. Besides, Cho-shi is just my boss, nothing else”
“Precisely, what he does with Bae-shi has got nothing to do with me” he kept on reminding himself
~~~oo0oo~~~
He then got to the train but…
~~~oo0oo~~~
“Due to an accident earlier today, the trains are running late and overcrowded, we apologize for the inconvenience. The next station is”
“Um, could you stop following me?” he looked away “What do you want anyway?”
Kyu looked down on him because of his height “Can’t a man go home?”
“Oh crap, I forgot that we’re neighbors! It totally slipped my mind” it hit him right on the spot
“Could you please take a step back? I’m all squished” Hae demanded
“Huh?”
“I said it’s hot” he looked out of the window
“Really now…? I’m not that hot” he twisted his words
“I should stop talking to him” “How are you doing with the mangaka you’re supervising?” he asked
“What?” “Just four more stations”
“I’m talking about Hyorin-shi”
“What about her?” Kyu didn’t like the way he’s being ignored
“Why are you trying so hard to avoid me?” he leaned forward and Hae practically leaned away with a dreaded look in his face but his heart started to beat wildly again
“What’re you talking about? I’m not…” he tried to evade the question
“Liar, you’re clearly trying to avoid me” he firmly said
“You’re imagining things. Why would I need to avoid you?” he confidently answered back
Kyu leaned closer to whisper to him “Maybe because I make you feel self-conscious?”
Hae immediately blushed at the words “Why… why the hell would you… yikes!” the trained screeched it’s wheels on the rail
“The train may make sudden turns, please be careful”
“Tell us before the actual turn!”
“Really now…!” the people began to complain
While the people continued to chatter with what had happened, Hae froze to the feeling of being caught by Kyu
“You okay?” Kyu asked
Hae composed himself up and pushed himself right back “Huh…? Yeah, sorry about that”
His heart sped up “What the hell am I doing, leaning against him?!” he turned away
Hae noticed from the reflection from the window “He’s… he’s definitely… looking at me? But why?” his heart beat didn’t falter to beat so loudly
“If you’ve got something to say, just spit it out! And stop staring at me” he felt uncomfortable with his gaze
He took a glance at the reflection once more and Kyu’s eyes was immensely at his
~~~oo0oo~~~
They finally got home
~~~oo0oo~~~
He sat in front of his door all exhausted “Oh man… I’m so tired… what am I going to do? I just renewed my lease, but maybe I should seriously consider moving” he desperately thought
He staggered his way towards the living room “I’m just going to take a bath and go to bed” but when he saw the fax machine and saw that there were mails
“Hyorin-sunbae sent me her storyboard. I didn’t think she’d finish it today, she really outdid herself” he looked at the fax
“This is no time for a bath, I’ve got to look this over and send a reply”
Time passed by as he continued to do his work and checked the storyboard “Wow, I might actually be able to do this” he felt confident
“But I can’t be sure if my suggestions are even close to helpful, oh, right I can just ask Song-shi for help, he used to be her editor” he was about to dial him but…
He recalled “Be sure to show all storyboards to Cho-shi. It’s the rule” he reminded
“Got it, but when we’re really busy, you can just show them to me”
“I just really, really don’t want to see him again today or tomorrow, oh, that’s right. I’ve got a fax machine for situations like these. I hope she doesn’t mind circulating her work. Well, I still need to get his opinion” he then started to fax it to Kyu
As he continued to do so his phone rang “I wonder who it is” “Yes?”
“I’m right next door! Grab the storyboard and get over here!” the voice screamed at him right away
“Cho-shi!” “Uh, I don’t… but…”
“Or should I come over?” he gave an option
“No! Seriously… please don’t!” he raised his voice
“You’ve got five seconds”
“I got it already! I’ll be right there!” he then took the storyboard and hesitantly walked out his door
“Oh, man. I really don’t want to see him. But wait! I can just stick this in his mailbox and then we can do the commentary over the phone!” he leaned down and tried to stick the whole storyboard into the mail
The door then opened up and hit his head “What are you doing?” Hae felt his head throbbing with pain
Kyu took the storyboard from his hand and went inside “Come in, I’ll look this over. Right, make yourself at home. I’m always on standby for work, so please feel free to use the phone if you need to”
Since Hae didn’t follow him he then turned. “Listen up. I’m not going to tolerate a half-assed job”
“What…? What the hell? When have I ever… done a half-assed job?” he then got inside and they both sat as Kyu reviewed the storyboard for the changes that would be made
Hae felt awkward with the surrounding “Ugh, I want to go home… to be honest, this place is a lot neater than I expected it to be” he complimented as he looked around
Kyu then turned “I’m done. So, what would you suggest as corrections…?”
“Oh, right”
“I’ll leave the dialogue for later. Let’s concentrate on the flow of the panels first” he cleared out the whole process
“This is supposed to be a scene where the protagonist’s heart is all aflutter, but Hyorin-sunbae ends the scene with a gag. I feel this interrupts the flow of the story board. I think that it’d be better to keep the scene serious and just fade out instead of using a gag. I also feel that overall there are too many gag panels” he pointed out the flaws in her gags
“They don’t really serve a purpose, so they should be cut…If you read the storyboard carefully, you should be able to figure out which of the panels serve a purpose and which don’t” Kyu drew the corrections needed “What’s more, you need to rearrange the panels there. The tempo’s off”
~~~oo0oo~~~
After a while they’ve now finished the changes needed
~~~oo0oo~~~
Hae was astounded to see it done “Wow, this looks a lot better. But although this version flows a lot more smoothly”
“We’ll still need to get Hyorin-sunbae’s approval for our changes. I don’t think it’ll be a problem” Kyu stood up to fetch some coffee “Um, what did you think about my corrections?” Hae wondered
“They were fine or maybe I should say that you’ve got the basics down pat. You’re just a little too perfect” he took a sip of his coffee
“Oh, well you’re still are learning” he took another sip and it got Hae’s attention
“Too perfect…? I wonder what he meant… did I make some kind of mistake after all?” he took a gander on their changes
“Would you like some coffee” he offered him
Hae got everything and took off, “No, thanks. I’ve got to call Hyorin-sunbae, so…”
“It’s pass one in the morning” Kyu reminded him
“Then, I’ll just read these through one more time by myself” he made a excuse
“Sorry about the late hour” he was about to go
Kyu then placed his cup on the table “Hey, tell me something why are you avoiding me?”
“I’m not avoiding y…” Kyu spoke before he could finish
“Are you in love with me?” he directly said
Hae paused and looked back at him
