Chasing Contrails
Description
I met him beneath a clear sky, surrounded by spring air. It was this boy, who painted his world in his own set of colors and saw beauty in things nobody else ever cared about, that taught me to chase contrails.
Warning (Written in white because it spoils the story a little, but select it to see it; do not worry, it does not appear that explicitly in the story): Slight mentioning of suicide attempt(s)
Foreword
Entry for the PENS, PLANS, AND THE GREAT PERHAPS writing contest, cycle 1 (Spring)
won first place!!
Read me, I am nice!
The story behind this oneshot is quite a long one, haha. I had not entered a writing contest since my first one some time ago, and had not really planned on doing so either, when I found this writing contest and it just attracted me. I am not that fond of writing about seasons (might as well be honest) but there were interesting prompts and somehow, I ended up being interested in writing about something about spring. Maybe it is because of the weather, haha. Regardless, that was how I was initially motivated into writing an oneshot.
The next mission was to find out what to write about. I had been lurking the chapter with the prompts some time before I finally found one I quite liked.
It is so small a thing to have enjoyed the sun,
to have lived light in the spring,
to have loved, to have thought, to have done
I do not know why, but it just took me. It had something. It made me think, imagine. It made me want to write about it (Not that you will really be able to find it back...). And so, this story had taken yet another step. Now all I needed was a plot. Oh boy was that difficult. I had just been reading some mangas, because I wanted to relive some childhood feelings, when I stumbled upon the manga 360 degrees or something, which really is quite interesting. The contrail part is partly stolen from that manga haha, so really, I might as well be considered a copycat! But do not report me yet! I made changes and really just took the idea of contrails, and created my own plot out of it. Also, this story is inspired by Orange, another beautiful manga. I do not know why, but I felt like it was inspired by it haha.
So that was how the plot was kind of born, but then I was in need of a character. I was thinking about Yoona, because, well, she was on the contest banner and poster and all, but I found it more suitable to use a boy in the end. The question was who. Those who know me know I use only a handful of idols, having decreased into a particular male at one point (paired with another male, but that is beyond the point). But suddenly, I found another person more suitable for this story - Baekhyun.
I really had no particular reason for choosing him, other than that I found it pleasant to use him for this oneshot. So, yeah, that was how he became the main character in this story. Lastly, about the other character. The funny thing is... This person does not have a name. I only realized that when I was rereading what I already had written, and I found it a pleasant idea. I mean, it really is mainly focused on Baekhyun, and this person is only telling the story, so I wanted to keep that. So now you have a story that is kind of being told by a person that has no name... Typically me haha.
But I generalized that to everything, and you will see that none of the other characters really have names, which I did on purpose. I did it on purpose because it felt nice, and it even provides you, as the reader, the chance to imagine the characters and everything. I do not know... I just liked the idea of it.
I am quite proud of this story? Yes, I believe I am. It might be a little... Anti-climatic? No, that might not completely describe it. I do not know. It is quite long, in my opinion, more than 6000 words, which was not my goal. I really wanted to write a poem in the beginning, haha, but that did not work out, it seems. It is just a pleasant kind of mystery? Aish, I really do not know. I also deliberaly created that hideous thing that should resemble a poster without characters, just to keep the imagination high.
Well, enough talking haha, I hope you will enjoy this story! Also, do remember to check out the other lovely entries for the contest! They are brilliant and definitely deserve the recognition!
