The Missing Piece

A/N: Sorry for the delay! I've been really busy with school and I really want to finish Tongue Tied sometime soon. However, I feel like you guys have waited long enough for an update. Enjoy!!

The four girls were inside an aquarium, Sooyoung on Sunny’s shoulders and Hyoyeon on Yuri’s shoulders.

They were having a race towards the shark tanks, going from one side of the second floor to the other.

Small children and elderly people watched as these “adults” ran through the bustling area, wondering where in the world the security was.

Much to Sooyoung and Sunny’s disappointment, they lost.

“I knew I should’ve done the running,” Sooyoung pouted, upset that they now had to buy drinks for the other girls.

Sunny just huffed and puffed, trying to collect herself.

“If you did the running we would’ve been way more behind,” she panted, shooting a glare at the tall girl.

Meanwhile, Yuri and Hyoyeon were celebrating, giving each other their secret ultra super friendship high five that they invented years ago in pre-school.

“I don’t know why you guys even bother to challenge us,” Hyoyeon declared with a smirk. Her shoulders and Yuri’s were shrugging in time as they laughed evilly, scaring even the nearby families who also wanted to enjoy the sharks.

“This place is so pretty,” Yuri cooed as she planted herself against the barrier in front of the glass. She wondered if the sharks could see her as they swam through the clear water.

“It seems like a perfect date place, huh?” Sunny sighed, leaning against the barrier as well with her head in her hands. “We’ve been out all day and we haven’t met anyone cute yet.”

Sooyoung groaned, “Taeyeon would love it here, wouldn’t she?”

Hyoyeon and Yuri glanced over at Sunny before narrowing their eyes in unison.

“Whoops.”

---

The rest of the day went by rather quickly. The rain never stopped so the girls restricted their vacation activities to include only the interior, going between little places to shop, the aquarium, different restaurants for both lunch and mid-lunch-dinner, and a museum Sunny forced them to go visit.

While enjoying themselves thoroughly and buying cute souvenirs for their loved ones back at home, Sooyoung couldn’t help but find that everything reminded her of Taeyeon.

Even the most abstract of things, like a tree branch would slowly transform into the small girl’s beautiful face. Sooyoung was starting to think she was going crazy.

After the long day, the girls drove back home with Sooyoung driving and the three other girls sleeping altogether at the back. Sooyoung glanced at her rear view mirror and smiled when she saw Hyoyeon and Yuri cuddling while Sunny was leaning against the window on her side.

She was thankful for her friends. If they weren’t here, she’d be agonizing in bed over what to do about the situation she found herself in. Thanks to them, she was able to enjoy her day and distract herself from the thought of seeing Taeyeon again.

And as if on cue, Sooyoung saw a petite figure walking along the sidewalk with an umbrella in hand. Her eyes widened upon realization of who the woman was and lowered her window.

“Hey,” she called out rather softly, not wanting to scare away the girl.

But once Taeyeon turned to face her, she flinched before wearing a frown.

“Sorry about this morning,” Sooyoung said as she drove slowly next to the girl. “I um…I must have scared you, huh?” Her voice was much softer than usual, her body almost trembling as she prayed that Taeyeon didn’t hate her.

Taeyeon wasn’t sure how to respond and wondered if the laws of not talking to strangers applied here. But technically, they did meet before. While she knew that her sister’s wouldn’t approve of this interaction, she couldn’t help but not ignore the other girl.

“I’m told I’m a little too friendly sometimes,” she chuckled nervously and tried her best to keep Taeyeon’s gaze. “I hope you can forgive me?”

Although Taeyeon was unsure at first, she couldn’t help but return the kind smile that this stranger was giving her. Something about this woman oozed warmth and Taeyeon could feel the trauma from breakfast fading away.

“Yeah,” she answered with a nod, “I would suggest you not do that anymore though. Yoona and Seohyun could lose business if you just yell at their customers you know?”

When Taeyeon’s small smile broke into a huge grin and then turned into that majestic laugh Sooyoung had been waiting all her life to hear again, she couldn’t help but bounce a little in her seat.

“I promise I won’t do it again,” Sooyoung responded with stretching so wide that she wondered if she could possibly break her pretty face this way. “It’s Taeyeon, right?”

The small girl tilted her head, “Yeah, how did you know my name anyway?”

Sooyoung retreated back into her seat a little, her head screaming at her to think of an answer right away.

“Everyone in the diner knows you,” she chuckled lightly, sticking her tongue out, “You must be really popular.”

Sooyoung swore that she could hear a snort come from the back seat and she knew that when they got home, she had to beat up her best friends.

At first Taeyeon raised her brow but she shrugged, accepting the answer, “Well, I do go there every morning. I think I know the names of the other regulars as well.”

Sooyoung nodded, relieved that she got away with her answer.

“So you on your way home? I could give you a ride if you want,” Sooyoung offered, unsure if peace was officially settled between the two of them. She gave Taeyeon her best puppy dog eyes even tilted her head to the side for good measure.

Taeyeon looked down at the bag of sugar she went out to buy then back at the girl in the driver’s seat giving her the most ridiculous look she’s seen in a while before laughing at the entire situation.

“Why not?”

To Sooyoung’s relief, the two of them were able to talk about their day with no qualms whatsoever. It seemed like Taeyeon completely forgot about the incident from that morning.

“So what did you enjoy visiting the most?” she asked as they turned into their street. Home wasn’t too far away now.

“I think I liked the aquarium the most,” Sooyoung responded with a happy nod, “I’ve never seen such a huge collection of fish!” she sounded like a small child while explaining herself and even did a little swimming motion while in her seat. “It also made me feel like watching Finding Nemo.”

Taeyeon giggled before shaking her head, “I thought you told me you were 26, not 5.”

“I wasn’t lying to you, I swear,” Sooyoung replied with a wink, “I’m just young at heart you know.”

Taeyeon continued to shake her head, “Well, if you really enjoyed the aquarium, I suggest you take a glass bottom boat tour. It’s supposed to be a nicer day tomorrow so you and your friends can go then.”

Sooyoung held her breath for a second before turning the car into their parking spot.

“Think you’d like to come with us?” she asked bravely, turning off the car and turning to face Taeyeon completely.

The smaller girl shrugged, “We’ll have to see about that. Anyway, you weren’t kidding about living near us. Thanks for the ride!”

When Taeyeon got out of her car, she noticed her two younger sisters watching from afar and staring at her with curiousity.

“I got a ride!” she shouted from her spot before flailing her hands in the air.

Tiffany and Jessica looked at each other, Tiffany having to hold Jessica’s hand before she stormed over there.

“You guys should come over for dinner some time,” Taeyeon offered with a wide smile, “Fany always loves meeting tourists!”

Hyoyeon, Yuri and Sunny soon filed out of the car, yawning and stretching their limbs as if waking themselves up from their pretend sleep. How could they sleep when Taeyeon and Sooyoung were having a conversation?

“We would love to come over,” Hyoyeon declared in her best English.

“Not bad sleepy head,” Taeyeon teased with a chuckle. She wasn’t the best at English either, but it always entertained her to hear people from out of time attempt the language.

“We go tomorrow?” Yuri followed up, wondering if now they had to speak in English.

Sunny elbowed her while trying to stifle her laughter. “Sorry, it’s her first time here.”

“How about you Sooyoung? Can you speak English?” Taeyeon asked, her eyes sparkling with anticipation.

The tall girl suddenly felt flustered, all vocabulary jumping out of the window as Taeyeon looked at her with expectant eyes.

“I…um…” she looked at her friends for help but they just smirked at her, waiting for her answer.

“Wacky Wednesday endless chicken wings?” she exclaimed in a rush, remembering the first English phrase that came to mind. She suddenly regretted going to that chicken hut for lunch.

All of the other girls burst into laughter, causing Sooyoung’s face to turn red. She buried her face in her hands and chanted in her head that this was all a dream.

“You’re cute for someone who’s supposed to be crazy,” Taeyeon complimented, reverting back to Korean and patting Sooyoung’s shoulder before turning towards her house. “Anyway, thank you again for the ride and I hope you guys have a good night.”

The smaller girl broke into a small jog towards her sisters as Sooyoung waved silently, still embarrassed about her outburst. It didn’t help that Hyoyeon, Yuri and Sunny were clutching onto each other, trying to keep each other up while laughing.

Without holding back, she smacked each girl on the head before storming back towards the house.

It didn’t faze them at all.

“You guys can sleep outside!”

i love how you portrayed the friendship between sunny, sooyoung, hyoyeon, and yuri. kept the fic light and fun to read all throughout. i'm looking forward to the progression of taeyeon and sooyoung's romance, as well as the fleshing out of other side characters (jessica, tiffany, etc.). tbh, i haven't really watched the movie 50 first dates yet, so i'm excited to see how sooyoung plans to woo taeyeon for the entire month she's in hawaii haha. hope you decide to continue this soon!
