Determination

The Missing Piece

As if out of nowhere, it started to rain. It felt appropriate however for Sooyoung’s thoughts were stormy and hazy. She was confused to the core. If this was Taeyeon’s way of rejecting her, it’s going a little too far.

“I told you to stay put,” Seohyun said with her eyes closed and arms folded. Steam was coming out of her nose at this point but Sooyoung missed it, being clouded in her own anger.

“What the hell happened in there?” Sooyoung asked with a little sass in her voice. She looked back to see Taeyeon still cowering behind Yoona and felt another surge of hurt course through her veins. “Is she crazy or something?”

She didn’t mean to ask it like that but it just came out in those exact words. There was too much going on in her head for her to think straight. She hoped that no one else heard what she said and bit her bottom lip as if forcing herself to calm down a little.

“Taeyeon is a very special girl,” Seohyun responded with a sigh. She looked Sooyoung square in the eyes and was surprised to see the clear hurt in them. She expected anger, confusion, but not hurt.

“Could you please explain a bit more?” Sooyoung pleaded, suddenly taking Seohyun’s hand and squeezing it.

Seohyun placed her other hand over Sooyoung’s and took the time to explain every detail to Sooyoung. From the tradition of pineapple picking to the incident on the road that left Taeyeon unconscious for months. Her tone was almost robotic, as if she had told the story many times before. With each word that came out of , Sooyoung could sense tears coming.

“Ever since that accident, Taeyeon lost her short term memory,” Seohyun explained, shaking her head at the thought.

“So she doesn’t remember anything?” Sooyoung asked, slightly confused. She doesn’t recall taking any psychology classes in school and frankly, the whole situation seemed like a little much for her to comprehend. But she wanted to cry, she wanted to cry really badly.

“No, she has retained her long term memory. Every memory up until the morning of the accident she remembers,” Seohyun continued, pointing at a part of her head, “That’s all up in here. However, she got injured over here, where her short term memory resides.”

Sooyoung tilted her head and raised her eye brow at Seohyun, still a little confused.

“Every day she relives the day of the accident because every morning she thinks that it’s April 18th, the day of her sister’s birthday. And every morning she comes here for breakfast because that’s what she did on Saturday mornings, the morning of the accident,” Seohyun felt a little tired after explaining. It wasn’t an easy task and with every heavy word that came out of , she could tell that Sooyoung was having difficulty absorbing the details. She could’ve sworn that the tall girl’s eyes were watering, but she must have been imagining it.

Sooyoung’s mouth opened and closed as she tried to think of questions to ask. She crossed her arms and glanced back inside the diner to see that Taeyeon was seated and eating again.

“So she does the exact same thing every single day?” Sooyoung asked, her mind trying its best to wrap around the entire concept. “But doesn’t she read the papers? Doesn’t her family have a calendar at home or something?”

Seohyun shook her head, “Her sisters have worked hard to keep Taeyeon from finding out the truth since it would most likely traumatize her a little. They created multiple copies of that day’s newspaper and her sisters re-enact the same day every day, just for her.”

Sooyoung felt dizzy all of a sudden and she scratched her forehead, somehow finally understanding the situation. However, it still seemed somewhat crazy and a little over the top.

“Are you sure you’re not just saying this to drive me away?” Sooyoung asked a little quietly, her heart slightly broken. “I promise I’m not a bad person, I promise I won’t play around with her.”

Seohyun let out a heavy sigh and placed a hand on Sooyoung’s shoulder, “I wish I was lying. But this is completely and one hundred percent true. I could even direct you to the facility here that takes care of the mentally injured and you can find her doctor to find the truth from her yourself.”

Yoona then called out for Seohyun since the diner continued to operate even while Sooyoung wished that the world would stand still for a moment.

“So I plead that you don’t ever come back here,” Seohyun asked with a very serious and slightly frightening look on her face. “If you do come back, Yoona will force you out of here. She may not look it, but she’s very strong. Anyway, I must be heading back to work. Have a good day.”

Sooyoung watched, slightly distraught as Seohyun returned back inside the diner.

The girl who had been occupying her mind since the moment they met seemed to have a lot of complications around her. While it seemed plausible and while she felt that Seohyun wouldn’t be the type to lie, she just had to hear it from her doctor. And so, without an umbrella in hand, Sooyoung looked for the institute to hear the extent of the tale.

---

Hyoyeon and Yuri were cleaning up the living room while Sunny took a shower. The other two had done their showering and were just fixing the place up before heading to the diner where they would meet up with Sooyoung.

Although it was raining and Hyoyeon wanted to just have breakfast at home, the three figured that they should at least check up on Sooyoung. One, to see what progress she could have possibly made with Taeyeon and two, to about it later.

The door slammed open however, much to Hyoyeon and Yuri’s surprise, causing the two to scream and hold each other. Hyoyeon grabbed her broom and held it above her head as she anticipated their invader.

A dark figure came from the door, dripping wet from the rain. Hyoyeon and Yuri grasped onto each other tightly, terrified of who could have possibly invaded their house.

The figure groaned before slamming the door behind it and making its way inside.

“S-Sooyoung?” Yuri carefully asked as she bravely let go of Hyoyeon and approached the wet stranger. She could recognize that long dark hair and stick like figure anywhere.

“Hey guys,” her voice dragged on, her face finally showing from behind her damp hair. She was lucky she didn’t put on any make up, but it didn’t stop her face from looking completely miserable.

“What happened?” Hyoyeon asked before running off to get Sooyoung a towel. “Are you dumb? You should’ve brought an umbrella with you. What if you get sick?”

Once the blonde found a towel she tossed it to Yuri who tossed it to Sooyoung. The thin, depressed looking girl wrapped herself up in the towel, slightly drying herself up.

“It’s Taeyeon,” Sooyoung mumbled. She let out a sigh and wiped her face with the towel as she recalled the doctor’s words. Everything Seohyun said had been true. And apparently, she wasn’t the first to inquire the details. Taeyeon’s story was a legend in the area and it seemed that the whole town played along with the charade.

Sunny emerged from her room, quickening her changing process when she heard the ruckus outside. She immediately ran to Sooyoung and engulfed the abandoned puppy like girl in her small arms.

“Did you two break up already?” Sunny teased with a small smile in an attempt to perhaps cheer Sooyoung up a little.

“I wish it was that simple,” Sooyoung mumbled in response, causing the rest of her friends to exchange confused glances.

Hyoyeon cooked the four of them breakfast after Sooyoung finished her tale. The four girls stayed silent as they absorbed the information. It seemed like something out of a fairy tale, something out of a book or a movie.

“Maybe it’s better this way,” Sunny made the first move as she set up the table for the four friends. She turned to Sooyoung who was still buried in her towel. “We are leaving in a month. This way, if it turned out to be something magical, then you wouldn’t have to feel sad when we have to go.”

Yuri nodded, “Yeah, forget about her Sooyoungie. We’ll continue to explore the island and have fun like we planned.”

That was what was supposed to happen. Sooyoung and three of her best friends would have a wonderful time in Hawaii and she would feel relaxed and full of energy before heading back home. She was supposed to take in the beautiful sights, try all the new foods, party, swim in the beautiful water and maybe even learn how to surf.

But somehow she couldn’t even think about all those possibilities when all she wanted to do was have that second date with Taeyeon. If she could, she would go back in time and replay that first meeting. The first moment she heard her laugh, the first second she saw her face and the brief moment they touched.

Hyoyeon set down the fruit and waffles she made for the group and sat next to Yuri. She plopped a piece of pineapple into and looked at Sooyoung with a wink.

“Or, I don’t know. Maybe you could just have a fling with this Taeyeon, you know. Every time you felt like it, you could seduce her, talk her up then when we have to go, you don’t have to worry about commitment or anything.”

The other three girls stared at Hyoyeon, shocked at what she said.

“What? You really seem to like Taeyeon, and that appears to be the only way you can date her,” Hyoyeon continued with a shrug.

Yuri was the first to respond as she shrugged.

“It doesn’t sound like a horrible idea,” she said as she ate a few pieces of apples.

Sooyoung rolled her eyes before stuffing a piece of waffle into , “Guys, she has brain damage! I can’t take advantage of her!”

“Then just forget about her,” Sunny offered, giving Sooyoung a nudge with her elbow.

Sooyoung let out a deep sigh as her friends stared at her intently. She had thought about it all morning and there was just something about Taeyeon that made her not want to forget about her. The breakfast they had the other day sparked something within her and Sooyoung was certain that she had never felt that way about anyone before. The feeling within her heart was foreign, but she wanted to act on it.

She had to act on it.

“I’m going back to that diner tomorrow,” Sooyoung announced firmly, nodding her head. She had been choosing between forgetting about her and moving on, or being a stubborn jackass and seeing her, every day just to hear her sweet voice.

Hyoyeon, Yuri and Sunny exchanged glances before Hyoyeon burst into laughter. Yuri quickly followed after and so did Sunny. It was like a chain reaction, something the four did often. However, Sooyoung didn’t find it very funny.

She glared at her friends for laughing at her. She was facing a very complicated and dire situation! They should be supportive, not making fun of her.

“Didn’t you say that Yoona girl was going to beat you up if you showed up in the restaurant again?” Hyoyeon asked, recalling very clearly the story Sooyoung had told minutes ago.

“I can take her,” Sooyoung retorted, flexing her arms in an attempt to show off her lack of muscles.

Sunny snorted as she poked the small bit of flesh on Sooyoung’s bicep.

“She’s going to break you in half,” Yuri snickered.

After stuffing the remainder of her breakfast into , Sooyoung stood erect and glared daggers into each of her friend’s heads. They all flinched at her actions and Sunny hid behind her hands, knowing very well how violent Sooyoung tended to be.

“You guys are awful friends!” she flipped her hair, splashing water on their faces in a dramatic matter. She followed her attack by wagging her head back and forth so that every last drop would make impact on their skin.

Hyoyeon flung a piece of strawberry at Sooyoung and stuck her tongue out at her. She knew Sooyoung had run out of ammo being the pig she was and sat back, challenging the tall girl with her eyes.

“Let’s not fight,” Sunny offered, holding her hands up against Hyoyeon and Sooyoung’s chest in an attempt to stop them.

Yuri raised her eye brow at Sunny, “Really? Their s?” She wasn’t really surprised, seeing that Sunny had a tendency of being very touchy. But it surprised her how she could joke around at a time like this.

Sunny giggled before lightly squeezing both of their chests in a teasing manner, “I heard it’s a good way of calming people down.” Sunny never wanted her girls to fight and it didn’t seem necessary to fight at all. Sooyoung was just in a horrible mood and as good friends, they just had to egg her on.

“Is that what worked on Hyomin?” Hyoyeon asked, clutching her s while turning away from her erted friend.

“Can we not mention the ex?” Sunny growled, pouting as she sat back down at her seat.

Sooyoung placed her hands on her hips as she eyed her friends carefully, “Come on guys, please tell me you support me in this?”

The three girls all exchanged glances, Hyoyeon shrugging with Yuri following after. Sunny let out a sigh before giving Sooyoung a smile. Hyoyeon stood up first and placed a hand on Sooyoung’s still very damp shoulder.

“We’re behind you all the way,” Hyoyeon muttered before pulling Sooyoung into a tight embrace.

Yuri joined the hug afterwards, rubbing her face into Hyoyeon’s shoulder, “I’ll take on Yoona for you if you need it.”

Sunny giggled before latching herself onto her best friends as well, “Best friends forever!” she cooed in the most aggravating aegyo she could muster.

Sooyoung immediately let go of all her friends and walked away, “You ruined the moment, Sunny.”

---

Taeyeon loved rainy days. She loved the sound, the smell and the calming feeling it brought upon her. However, she didn’t like this rainy day.

Although the girl that approached her was undeniably gorgeous, she couldn’t help but feel terrified when she was suddenly so friendly with her. Yoona had told her that she was just some local crazy that stumbled upon their diner, but she couldn’t but doubt her. Somehow the woman seemed somewhat familiar.

She shook her head and tried her best to remove all thoughts of the girl, despite her face not leaving her mind no matter how vigorously she shook.

Luckily, it was Jessica’s birthday and rain or shine, they were going to go pineapple picking like they did every year.

After parking her car, she quickly ran into the house to look for Tiffany. Much to her surprise, the girl was already waiting for her in the kitchen, pineapple in hand.

“Hey, what’s this about?” she whined, grabbing the pineapple from her little sister’s hand.

“Sorry Tae,” Tiffany apologized as she pat her shorter sister’s head, “When I was shopping this morning, you know Gyuri? That Korean exchange student who works at the farmer’s market?”

“You mean that girl who is totally in love with you?” Taeyeon said as she waggled her eye brows.

Tiffany hit Taeyeon on the shoulder playfully as she giggled, not failing to hide her blushing face.

“Anyway,” she continued, rolling her eyes at her ridiculous oldest sister, “She gave me this pineapple since it was Jessi’s birthday today.”

Taeyeon slumped against the kitchen counter and let out a huge sigh.

“Great, another thing gone wrong today,” she grumbled into the marble top.

“What happened?” Jessica called out, joining her sisters in the kitchen now.

Taeyeon, surprised that Jessica was up even a minute before 12PM, ran towards her sister and engulfed her in an extremely tight hug.

“Happy birthday, Sica!” she exclaimed, rubbing her face into her sister’s neck. “Sorry Fany’s girlfriend ruined our yearly tradition.”

“Hey!” Tiffany interjected, jutting her bottom lip, “It’s totally not her fault and she is NOT my girlfriend, yeesh.”

Jessica ignored the two girls as she was completely captivated in Taeyeon’s hair. She felt the stitches from the accident and once again felt apologetic for how much the girl had to suffer. She shook her head however, knowing that she had to continue their very well thought out script.

“Don’t worry about it Taengoo,” Jessica said as she grabbed Taeyeon’s hand, “There’s something else I want to ask from you since we can’t go on our usual trip.”

Tiffany quickly grabbed Taeyeon’s free hand and giggled as the two younger siblings brought the girl over to the garage.

“You see, Fany and I decided to paint the garage white and-“

“Excuse me?” Tiffany interjected, raising her eye brow at her older sister.

She made this mistake every day.

“Sorry, Fany painted the garage white and now I think it’s too white,” Jessica continued, coughing into her hand as Tiffany rolled her eyes.

Taeyeon was certainly feeling blinded by the white. It was a little overwhelming and it felt very empty. To be frank, it felt very bland and almost sickening.

“Way too white,” Taeyeon muttered as she shook her head, “I’m surprised Fany didn’t paint it pink.”

“Well actually,” Tiffany started, her face lighting up at the very mention of her favourite colour.

“Ignoring her,” Jessica interrupted, removing a blanket that covered a table filled with various paints and brushes. Taeyeon just chuckled at her sisters, for their bickering was very common and very much entertaining. But once her eyes set on the collection of wonderful art supplies, she felt open and very quickly go dry.

“Why don’t you paint me something pretty for my birthday?” Jessica offered, taking a brush and dipping it into the red paint. She quickly drew a heart on the blank wall and clapped happily at her creation.

“I’d be way more than happy to do that!” Taeyeon exclaimed, practically jumping onto the paint.

Soon enough, Taeyeon was lost in a world of colour and shape and Tiffany and Jessica couldn’t help but smile. Taeyeon was like this every time she was given the opportunity to paint the walls. It made them feel less guilty about lying to the poor girl.

They snuck away from the garage and walked hand in hand towards the living room.

“I guess that Sooyoung girl came again, huh?” Tiffany mumbled as the two girls lay next to each other on the couch.

“Whatever,” Jessica sighed, resting her head on Tiffany’s shoulder, “It’s better this way, right?”

“Right.”

i love how you portrayed the friendship between sunny, sooyoung, hyoyeon, and yuri. kept the fic light and fun to read all throughout. i'm looking forward to the progression of taeyeon and sooyoung's romance, as well as the fleshing out of other side characters (jessica, tiffany, etc.). tbh, i haven't really watched the movie 50 first dates yet, so i'm excited to see how sooyoung plans to woo taeyeon for the entire month she's in hawaii haha. hope you decide to continue this soon!
