Promises Are Meant To Be Broken

Burst Of Sunshine

My parents were dressed in adorable matching tracksuits. They personally ordered them from Italy after seeing them on the hit show ‘Secret Garden’.

I opted to dress casually in a loose white top, sports shorts and white converse shoes.

We got into my fathers Porsche; the neighbourhood that we were driving past is one that I’m not well acquainted with. Even though I was feeling a bit down about having not made any friends, I was extremely excited because it seemed like we’re going on a family outing or something. After driving for 15minutes, I was getting a bit impatient so I was bouncing up and down in my seat out of boredom.

“Honey, could you relax a little? We’re nearly there,” my mom said.

I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself down. My mom was correct though; after a minute we were there. By there I mean the most humungous and awesome park I have ever seen in my life! I absolutely love the atmosphere of parks; the air feels so fresh and crisp. The park looked so lusciously green; there were 3 different playgrounds, 2 basketball courts, a waterfall and a pond. The scenery of the park is ‘to die for’; it’s absolutely beautiful with rich flora and there’s a cute walkway for people to explore the park.

“Thank you so much for bringing me here!” I said to my parents.

“Honey, it’s not a problem! Your father and I are going to do some walking but we’ll come back and meet you here in 2 hours,” my mom said. After kissing me on the cheek, my parents embarked on their ‘magical’ walk. I swear my parents are so cute! They’re just about as in love as they were when they first met and I think that’s just beautiful.

Anyways, I went crazy…literally! I went on all of the playgrounds and met two of the most adorable little kids. Their parents managed to convince me to baby-sit them sometime this week, which is good because I really don’t have anything to do afterschool sometimes. I walked over to the waterfall and put my hands near it; I could feel drops of water rolling effortlessly off my hands. Water can be so picturesque. I ran around everywhere like a lunatic…just because I can!

I sat myself down on a bench in front of the basketball courts and tried to get my heartbeat back to normal...sightseeing is so tiring! From my peripheral vision I could see a guy sitting down next to me. I sharply turned my head around and stared at him.

“What’s your name?” I asked.

“Umm, my name is Sehun. What’s your name?” he asked.

“My name’s Mia. You’re smoking hot! Did you know that? Because if you didn’t then that’s just horrible! It’s really sad when people don’t know how attractive they are so if you didn’t know which is highly unlikely now you know!” I said.

Sehun laughed then said, “Thanks…I guess; you’re a really straightforward person.”

“Of course! It’s important to be honest, no beating around the bush for me. So, do you want to be friends with me?” I asked.

“You’re kind of weird so I’m a bit indecisive about being your friend. How about if you can beat me in a game of basketball then I’ll gladly be your friend,” he said.

“Okay, you’re on. Don’t go easy on me just because I’m a girl; in case you didn’t know I’m so amazingly talented at basketball that I should be playing in the NBA!” I said.

“Yeah…but you’re a girl,” he said and got up.

“YAH! You ist pig; wait till I beat you!” I said then ran after him.

We decided to play full court and I started with the ball, ladies first. I dribbled the basketball and weaved it in and out of my legs, I side stepped him and managed to score a 3 pointer! Oh yeah, GIRL POWER! We were pretty even for most of the game but Sehun gradually increased his speed and my goodness his strength is amazing! His defined muscled were showcased as he was wearing a singlet. At this rate I was going to lose. I lied…I’m nowhere near good enough to play for the NBA. I’m really good at exaggerating my skills and God given talents but the only way that I think I can win this basketball game is through the art of flirtation and manipulation.

“I thought you were going to win!” Sehun said as he dribbled past me then scored.

“I will win!” I said.

“What’s the score again? Oh right! I’m winning 40 to 33,” he said.

As Sehun was dribbling the basketball around me, I stopped him by placing a hand on his cheek and said, “You know, your eyes are an absolute masterpiece; those lovely one of a kind brown irises that shimmer in the golden sun. ”

Sehun looked absolutely flabbergasted and the ball softly dropped out of his hands. I dropped my hand from his face and grabbed the ball, to successfully shoot from half court.

“YAH! That’s cheating!” Sehun exclaimed.

“What are you going to do about it?” I asked.

“Ugh, let’s just keep playing,’ he said.

20 minutes later…drenched in perspiration, the result of a damn good workout.

“AHH I WON!” I screamed as I jumped and down in the air.

“Yeah…as a result of cheating,” he said.

“Hey! I won fair and square! I’m so happy; you don’t even understand. You’re my first friend here! YAAAY!” I screamed.

“Since you did win, I’ll keep my promise and I’ll be your friend. How about we go sit down and get to know each other,” he said.

We sat down on the grass opposite each other. Normally it would be kind of an awkward situation since we’ve just met but there wasn’t any awkward tension, which was great!

“So, tell me, what school do you go to?” he asked.

“I go to Seoul Performing Art High School,” I said.

“Really? I go there too! How come I’ve never seen you there before?” he said.

“Umm…I just moved to Seoul yesterday so my first day at school was today,” I said.

“Ohhh you’re the new girl! You know, it’s really hard to get into our school! You must be pretty talented,” he said.

“Not really, I just like to dance,” I said.

“Same! Are you sure that you’ve never seen me before?” he asked.

“I don’t think that I would have been able to forget a beautiful face like yours,” I said.

“I don’t think I’ll ever get used to your straightforwardness,” he said.

“You’d better get used to it baby. You know, I didn’t see you at school today,” I said.

“Umm…I wasn’t really at school today. I had stuff to do,” he said.

“Fair enough. You sound awfully like this guy I sit next to in class,” I said.

“Oh really? What’s his name?” he asked.

“Let us not speak of the sleepy devil. Anyways, Mr I’m Too Busy To Go To School, will you be at school tomorrow?” I asked.

“Yeah, I will. Do you want to meet outside the cafeteria in the morning?” he asked.

“Sure, I’ll be there. I should get going now, it was nice meeting you Sehun! See you tomorrow,” I said and stood up.

“Wait! We should exchange numbers!” Sehun said.

We quickly exchanged numbers and said goodbye to each other. As I was walking back to my parents, I couldn’t help but to feel extremely happy! I made my first friend in Seoul; I know that sounds really childish and stupid but I’ve always found it hard to make friends. My personality can be quite overwhelming but I’m a really loving person and would do anything to help my friends.

My parents arrived earlier than I did at our meeting spot and were kissing.

“EWW PDA!” I screamed.

They broke apart and stared at me in bewilderment, “What’s PDA, honey?” my dad asked.

“Public Display’s of Affection. Honestly ain’t nobody got time for that,” I said.

“Honey, when’d you become so ghetto?” my mom asked.

“I’m not ghetto! I was just joking around, mom!” I said.

“Come on let’s go home!” my dad said.

I didn’t receive any homework from school so after I had dinner I sat in my room contemplating whether or not to go on with my plan of befriending Kai. Kai doesn’t seem to really like me and I’ve finally made a new friend so shouldn’t I try to focus my energy on Sehun? But, the feeling I got when I managed to make Kai smile, that was priceless!

Part of me wanted to dress prettily for Sehun so that he would feel proud that I am his friend. But, another part of me was considering carrying out my plan of wearing something unique to school and making Kai laugh with my randomness. I decided to sleep on it.

I woke up the next morning feeling very lethargic. I went on my usual morning jog through Seoul and got home on time! Yay for not being late! I chose to wear something unique to school; I’m going to try to make Kai warm up to me and break down some of his stupid barriers. I know that what I’m wearing is embarrassing but I couldn’t care less what people think of me; I’ll wear whatever the hell I want to wear. If I want to be Pikachu for a day, then Pikachu is what I shall be.

I left my hair out for once and brushed out all the tangles. I checked that I had enough chocolate to sustain me for the day and walked downstairs with my bag in hand.

When my mom saw me she dropped the glass she was holding; it fell haphazardly onto the ground, shattering into tiny pieces.

“Honey…you can’t go out looking like that!” she said.

“Why not?” I asked.

“How do I explain it in a way that you would be able to understand. That’s social suicide, honey,” she said.

“Mom, you know that I don’t care what people think of me,” I said.

“I know that! But, didn’t you make a new friend yesterday? You don’t want to scare him off by wearing this!” she said.

“He promised to be my friend!” I said.

“Honey, promises are meant to be broken!” she said.

“But…” I started.

“I know that today is mufti and you can wear whatever you want but can you just please put a change of clothes in your bag? You never know, you might want to change what you’re wearing later!” she said.

I just couldn’t decline her request. Even though my relationship with my parents is quite casual, at the end of the day, they’re my parents and I have a lot of respect for them.

I ran up to my room and quickly grabbed a change of clothes, just a skirt, long sleeved top and a tie.

I seem to do the most thinking when I’m walking to school; I really hope that Sehun keeps his promise and stays my friend. Maybe I’m just naïve in thinking that he’ll grow to love my weirdness. As I walked through the corridors in school, people’s reactions were quite funny! Some snorted in amusement, others wrinkled their noses in disgust but for the most part, people were just really surprised that I had come to school wearing that. I couldn’t avoid people’s stares so I looked back at them in the eye and smiled. The best way to scare off haters is with a delirious amount of happiness.

Sehun was waiting outside the cafeteria for me.

I ran up to him and said, “Hey! Have you been waiting for long?”

“Umm…no I haven’t. Why are you wearing that?” he asked.

“I wanted to wear something different. Do you not like it?” I asked.

“Couldn’t you have tried to wear something normal? Your personality is a bit overwhelming. I don’t know if I really want to be your friend,” he said.

“But you promised!” I said.

“Yeah, but promises are meant to…” he began.

I cut him off and said, “Be broken. I know! I’ve heard that. I didn’t verse you in basketball to be told that you don’t want to be my friend!”

“Look, I’m sorry but I can’t be your friend. I don’t even know what I was thinking agreeing to be your friend. It’s just embarrassing walking around with someone who’s dressed up as Pikachu!” he said.

“You shouldn’t care what people think! I certainly don’t!” I said.

“Which is why you have no friends, I’m sorry but I’ve gotta go. Good luck finding a friend,” he said then left.

I’m not going to lie, my eyes started tearing up; people can be so cruel sometimes!
