The Nature of Water

Description

Fate and nature are almost synonymous. What fate determines is entirely dependent on the laws of nature. And so, the two are cruel determinants of the human race. Every two generations behold four children of the elements. Fire. Earth. Air. Water. These are the leaders and saviors of the world, and yet, with good, there is always the other. There is always evil. Fairytales do not exist in this world. The world has become a twisted and heartless place, and the most unlikely group of people join and break to fight for existence. This is their reality.

Foreword

The cry of a newborn child ricochets off the hospital room walls, and both the nurse and the father let out sighs of relief. The doctor opens the door, a smile planted on his face.

“Congratulations. You are now father to a beautiful baby girl.” The father enters the room, his eyes alighting on the petite figure lying on the bed, a warm glow painting her cheeks. The small bundle in his wife’s arms immediately draws his attention.

His wife smiles at him as he approaches, gently placing the baby into his arms. A single glimpse of the child’s face sends his heart tumbling in love.

"I’ll leave you three alone for now.” The doctor says, closing the door behind him.

“SungAh, we’re parents now." He whispers. Shock apparent on his face. "Parents. Can you believe it?”

She chuckles, and takes the baby from his arms. The blanket slides off the child in the process, leaving the child's back and her curious little birthmark exposed.

The color drains from SungAh’s face.“Minwoo. Please tell me this isn’t what I think it is.”

Fifteen years of forgotten memories return to Minwoo’s mind; fear gripping his heart with its iron hold. "Impossible.”

To the ordinary eye, it was only a birthmark. A very unique birthmark. But SungAh and Minwoo were not ordinary people. The intricate detail between the lines was all too familiar. This mark determined the baby’s fate. A fate too dangerous to hold.

SungAh quickly slides the blanket over the child, covering the birthmark, and gives Minwoo a terrified glance. “What are we going to do?”

His face is creased with fear, his hands trembling uncontrollably."No one will know. No one can know. We have to protect our child.” He murmurs to his wife, pulling her into a reassuring hug.

A cloaked figure was perched on the roof, staring down at the couple with ice-cold eyes. He dropped down from the building and landed with the grace of a cat. In a matter of moments, a sleek black sedan slid into the parking lot, taking the man with him.

“Let me guess.” The driver drawls. “Another false alarm.”

A steely smile makes its way onto the man’s face. “On the contrary, I believe we have found ourselves a match.”
