Picked Up
CheckmateYuri and SooYoung sat with open mouths. Their pink tongues were all visible to Yoona and she held out her palm to make her friends shut their gaps. Not a very pretty sight at the lunch table. But she couldn't blame them either. Her news had been dropped on them out from nowhere. Of course, they didn't expect an engagement coming. She felt bad for not sharing her decision earlier, but Yoona had believed it was better to let them in after the deal had gone through. Otherwise, their always convincing and wise speeches would have gotten to her really easily.
"Ladies, do you think closing your openings any moment soon is possible?"
Her closest friend since childhood, Yuri, was the first to react. But the shocked glance in her eyes couldn't be deleted. Yoona knew why. They had always talked with each other about everything, whether it concerned their dreams, crushes or arguing families. Naturally, she expected her to share a very important thing such as marriage.
"But... why?"
A sudden whisper came from SooYoung, who had managed to pick herself together. Yoona turned her attention towards her other dearest girlfriend.
"I'm not following," she replied, knowing she came off as very mean.
"Don't be like that! You know what I mean! How can you accept this?"
Yoona sighed and figured this conversation wouldn't be easy, "Can we not talk about this here?"
Of course they had to! How could they not? Yoona understood how much anger her best friends carried and wanted to lash out at her. She herself wanted to scream in frustration. But her father had told her to keep it cool when she told SooYoung and Yuri, so that she could state the facts and not the emotions. For the unwinding of heavy feelings, she planned to hold an informal dinner and movie night with the girls. That way, everyone could get together and talk nonsense. Especially Yoona, who needed releasement the most. Her week had been the most dramatic one in her short life. She didn't wish for any more stress at the moment. Who did or would?
"How in the world can you ask that of us?" Yuri interrupted. "We're your best friends, you should have told us right from the start!"
"Please, I'm begging you, not here," Yoona whispered.
Worried that someone maybe was eavesdropping, Yoona looked around the closest tables. No one was looking their way and everybody seemed busy eating and happily talking. A bit relieved, Yoona faced two bulls with steam coming out from their ears and their nasal rings swaying because of powerful breathing. Both Yuri and SooYoung had crossed arms while looking at her with sarcastic eyes.
SooYoung was the one to keep the interrogation going, "Why didn't you tell us about your family?"
"And what could you have done?" Yoona replied, irritated at herself for the mean behavior she had.
"Obviously helped you find another way than marriage!" Yuri almost screamed.
Yoona felt as if a few tables near became quieter. She looked around, but nobody had their attention toward them. She met her darling Yuri with angry eyes and told her to keep down. Her life was a mess already. Everybody didn't need to know anything. Gossip spread very fast at her university. She had witnessed teachers and students experience the powers of talking lips and many had left. Yoona just wanted to study in peace, nothing more. Rumors would most definitely not contribute.
"Okay, fine!" SooYoung let out a sigh. "What now?"
Yuri chimed in, "Do you get married right away, or what?"
"Absolutely not! We're going to live together for 6 months from now on. So today, me and his mom is going to look at some apartments."
"I thought everything was cleared already!"
Yoona nodded, "Yeah, me too. Apparently not."
"That ," SooYoung mumbled.
"Very much so also. Well, I guess this will be a good chance for me to see what kind of person, who raised my future man, is."
A lump start
