Finding Heaven

Finding Heaven

”Kai…” The dark and harsh voice called out in the darkness of the night, the only light that brightened the cold room came from the fullmoon outside the cracked window. Arazotael, the demon lord, had just gotten a complaint about his son’s behaviour and had therefore contemplated about what to do about it. It had led him to make a decision to send his son on a mission to learn a thing or two.

It was a windy night in the land of the demons and the thunderstorm only became worse by the minute when Kai, the demon lord’s son, was summoned to the grand foyer. Just like its name, the room was truly majestic with its two winding staircases and grey marble floor. Both walls and staircases had ornaments in pure gold while there were red and black curtains decorating the large windows. Even though there were chandeliers hanging throughout the walls, they weren’t enough to light up the whole room.

Kai materialized out of nowhere, appearing through a white mist. His black wings fluttered a bit as he stretched them, yawning tiredly as he had just woken up from his well-needed rest.

“Yeah, what?” He let out with a sigh, annoyed by being awoken from one of the best dreams he had had in a long time. Kai scratched his neck before stretching it from side to side, momentarily gazing at the demon lord in the middle of the room.

“Don’t act like that towards me! I’m your father, show some more respect!” Arazotael more or less yelled out, questioning his own upbringing of his son as a single father.

“See? You just told me yesterday not to show any respect to anyone, so that’s what I’m doing. And when I asked you if you were sure about it, you just told me yes. So maybe you should clear things up before ordering people around?” Kai answered back in a matter of fact voice, smirking slightly when the expression changed on his father’s face into one of complete humiliation.

“Damn you… I should’ve known you would do something like this…” His father let out in defeat and massaged his temple with circular movements, suddenly feeling somewhat stressed. “Never mind… I’m sending you off to earth so you can get rid of your fascination of fairies or whatever it was you liked.”

“Angels! How hard is it to remember that?!” Kai blurted out almost fed up with always having to remind his father about it.

Kai had always questioned his fate as a demon, asking his father over and over again about how he could end up being one even if his mother had been an angel. Shouldn’t he have become partly angel if one of his parents actually was one? But no matter how much he tried to investigate in it, he couldn’t find any satisfactory answers. If only his mother would have been alive he could ask her about it. But Haelia, his mother, died when giving birth to him. The only thing she left behind was the wish of giving her son the name Kai, which Arazotael agreed on without questioning it.

Kai had been told about how his father and mother had fallen in love, a forbidden relationship that was loathed by many. But they hadn’t even cared what the others had thought and didn’t actually see the harm their love did to one another. Haelia’s life had been slowly deteriorating in the presence of Arazotael and had in the end turned her too weak when it was time to give birth to their first baby. She had sensed it all along, but never told her husband about it in fear of him leaving her. She loved her more than her own life and had the determination to keep going even if it would kill her.

“Angels then…” Arazotael sighed deeply, pushing away all emotions to keep his serious side up. “I want you to crush the perfect life of a human boy, someone who have had too much of the good. Do it any way you want, just as long as you succeed in doing it. You have to realize that you’re a demon, and demons are not supposed to help others.” He continued with his harsh voice, making it clear how much he depended on his son to finish his task with success.

“What if I don’t want to?” Kai questioned back and raised his chin up a bit in an arrogant way while looking directly in his father’s deep red eyes.

“I don’t care if you don’t want to. If you don’t do it, I’ll make sure all of your dreams get destroyed and everything you care about to disappear…” The demon lord announced coldly, making Kai shiver by the cruelty of the words.

Kai hated to be the son of the lord of the demons, since it were so many that observed his every little move and would use it against him. Demons were a race that lived by using evil and liked teasing the most. They always made a game out of everything they did and wouldn’t let anyone get away easily. And even if Kai wanted to, he couldn’t leave this godforsaken place. Not by his own powers at least. He also hated the horns on his forehead and the black wings on his back, even though his wings were similar to those of an angel. The tail wasn’t making it easy for him either; it was always in the way, making it extremely irritating to get dressed for an instance.

“No go. I don’t want you back until you succeed.” Was the last thing Kai’s father said before making his son disappear into thin air, a white mist emerged as the black haired young guy vanished.

Kai materialized in a narrow alley between two large buildings. He looked around the place and noticed a door on one of the sides and next to it were two large green trash containers. It was quite cold outside and Kai had to rub his arms to keep warm. The cold wind made him shiver and he decided to wrap his wings around his body instead. But that’s when he realized his wings were gone…

“What?” Kai let out as he glanced backwards to try see the wings that had been there since birth. But nothing, not even the tail was there. He quickly lifted his hands towards his forehead, noticing that the horns also were gone. It took a few seconds before the confusion and shock had gone down, slowly getting replaced by delight.

“Yes! It’s gone! Everything is gone!” Kai burst out in pure happiness, making a small victory dance for finally being rid of the annoying ‘accessories’ as he usually called them.

“It’s good to see that someone is happy for losing everything…” A voice behind of him said before chuckling.

Kai swiftly turned around with wide eyes, facing a dark haired guy in white chef’s clothes and a bright smile on his face. All of a sudden a feeling of humiliation washed over Kai, a dark shade of pink spread on his cheeks as he stared into the dark eyes of the guy a few meters away from him.

“Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone about this.” The unfamiliar guy said reassuringly before reaching out his hand. “I’m Kyungsoo. Nice to meet you!”

Kai stared at the hand like it was something strange, but soon took it in his hand a bit hesitantly.

“Kai.” He simply let out as he squeezed Kyungsoo’s hand a bit, feeling the heat from it warm up his own cold hand. Right afterwards, his stomach made a loud growl, obviously making it known how hungry he was.

Kai’s eyes widened in shock and embarrassment, he hadn’t really been this hungry before. Because where he comes from, they only eat once per day. A feast with as much food as one could possibly want.

“I guess it’s not that surprising that you’re hungry if you’ve lost everything…” Kyungsoo said while suppressing a laugh. “Follow me. I’ll make you something delicious.” He continued before motioning Kai to go through the door that Kai had seen earlier.

Kai wanted to decline the offer at first, but it felt like something was pulling him inside. Not only the fact that his stomach was more or less empty, but also because the slightly shorter male seemed interesting for some reason. The picking curiosity led him to follow the human inside the building, entering a bright room with black and white checkered tiles all over the floor. They had arrived inside a kitchen as Kai recognized it to be, even though the kitchens in the demon world were somewhat different. Mostly it was the colors and the decorations that differed from those he was used to.

“You can sit down at that table over there.” Kyungsoo said as he pointed at a table closest to the kitchen.

Kai had to examine the hole in the wall before realizing that it was there to make the guests to be able to see their food getting prepared. An open kitchen as the other demons had called it after getting back from the human world to tell about their adventures. So Kai wasn’t wholly clueless about human life, he had gotten some information about it already. Especially from one of his so called friends, Atael who had told him about the beautiful girls and delicious food and everything else that he had fallen for.

But it seemed like there was more than just beautiful girls in this world.

Kai stared at the dark haired guy standing at the kitchen counter to prepare some vegetables, the brightness of the room made it easier to actually see Kyungsoo. His dark short hair was partly hidden underneath a white chef’s hat; he seemed to be quite slim since his white clothes was a bit loose-fitted. Kai let his eyes wander up to Kyungsoo’s face to linger there for a while. He noticed the concentrated look on the guy’s face, showing that he was really into what he was doing. Kyungsoo looked like he was truly enjoying cooking as a small smile appeared when he had finished cutting the vegetables and was now choosing herbs with care.

Kai couldn’t help but stare at the guy in front of him that were putting effort in cooking for him. The expressions that kept on changing ever so slightly when Kyungsoo chopped the ingredients or put them in different pans, made Kai slowly lose his mind. He looked so beautiful when he concentrated on the things he were doing and Kai hadn’t been through anything like this before. How can a mere human be so beautiful?

“The dinner is soon done; hang in there for a few more minutes…” Kyungsoo broke the silence and smiled when Kai snapped out of his daze, looking confusedly at him.

That smile… Kai thought as he once again drifted into the fantasy world inside his head. A world consisting of just Kyungsoo and himself, a place without any worries or complaints…

How the heck did it turn out like this?! He slammed his fists on the table, successfully surprising Kyungsoo almost to the point of dropping the plate with food on the floor. Kyungsoo stared with huge eyes at Kai, completely confused.

“What?” Kyungsoo hesitantly questioned as soon as Kai stared back into his eyes. “Are you okay?”

“W-what? Oh… o-of course I’m okay!” Kai stuttered, he had once again made a fool of himself only that this time he had probably scared the heck out of the guy. He cleared his throat before continuing in a more confident way. “I must be starving, that’s why…”

Kyungsoo only nodded understandingly and finally put the plate in front of Kai before seating himself on the opposite side of him. When he smiled once again, Kai couldn’t help but think that he looked purely angelic. His big dark orbs as eyes were shining when Kyungsoo smiled brightly, making him breathtakingly beautiful. If it hadn’t been for Kai’s increasing heart rate and the inability to look away from the guy in front of him, Kai probably wouldn’t know that he had just fallen in love.

Fallen in love with someone he can’t love. A human…

Kyungsoo stared at him in anticipation, waiting patiently for Kai to taste his cooking and see his reactions to it. He had this weird habit of observing every little effect his food made on different people and this time wasn’t an exception. He truly wanted to know what others thought about his cuisine and spent a lot of time making notes of it. Kyungsoo wanted to become the best chef ever to walk on this planet and wouldn’t give up on his dream anytime soon. And he had been more than happy when he had met Kai, for more than just one reason.

“Aren’t you going to eat?” Kyungsoo questioned while tilting his head a bit when Kai hadn’t moved a single muscle for a while.

“Oh… right…” Kai let out after getting startled by the sudden question from Kyungsoo. He soon started eating though and had to take a moment to taste the rich flavors of the meat and vegetables that harmonized in his mouth. The mix of ingredients made it water in his mouth and all the aromas of the herbs exploded on his tongue with flavors, making it more than just delicious.

“This…” Kai began but didn’t know how to put it in words, making Kyungsoo look at him intensely with expectation. “Truly amazing…” He finally let out in admiration, gazing straightly into the other’s eyes.

Kyungsoo’s face brightened up with the most wonderful smile so far, making his eyes crinkle in a cute way as he let out a melodious chuckle. Everything about him seemed so beautiful to Kai, something he knew wasn’t that good if his father would ever find out about these feelings that Kai had somehow developed for the human boy. Well, his father hadn’t said anything about not being allowed to fall in love with anyone while being here, but when he thought about it, his father hadn’t even told him the name of the guy he was supposed to mess with.

And this made him have a strange feeling. Something wasn’t right…

“I’m happy you liked it!” Kyungsoo said after a while, still with a genuine smile on his face.

Kai finally returned the smile, beaming happily at the human at the opposite side of the table, surprising Kyungsoo a bit. The handsome boy that sat in his restaurant was having a really mesmerizing smile, making him a truly dazzling sight with his black hair and fit body. If he didn’t know better he would’ve thought Kai was from another planet.

“Would you care to help me find a place to stay at? It’s pretty cold outside and it’s getting dark…” Kai’s sudden and weird question took Kyungsoo by surprise.

Kai had just finished the food on his plate before he had asked the question with slightly raised eyebrows. Carefully making his first move to get closer to the human, who had taken his heart with not much effort.

“Of course!” Kyungsoo happily let out when he had been asked for help, feeling somewhat useful for once. “If you don’t mind… you could stay at my place for the time being…” He shyly proposed as he scratched his neck nervously.

This was the first time Kyungsoo had mustered up courage to actually talk with someone he liked, nonetheless to a stranger. Not that they were completely strangers anymore though, but he thought that maybe he had been a bit bold for being the first time. Still there was something that intrigued him to keep Kai at his side, to get to know more about the said guy.

Another handsome smile from Kai made Kyungsoo’s heart skip a beat. His cheeks instantly turned a pale shade of pink as he swallowed nervously. He had probably met the most gorgeous guy ever in his life and almost couldn’t take the butterflies in his stomach when he stared at the handsome features of Kai. His messy black hair only made the guy look y and Kyungsoo blamed his stupid brain for coming up with too many thoughts about the seemingly perfect male in front of him.

He must be a…

“Demon.” Kai interrupted Kyungsoo’s thoughts, making the latter stare at him confusedly. “I’m a demon… I thought I should tell you that…” Kai continued as his expression dropped into a mix of nervousness and worry. He felt like he really had to tell the guy about what he actually was, especially if he wanted to be accepted for who he was and not for who he tried to be.

“What?” Kyungsoo let out in disbelief, his lips curled into a skeptic smile before laughter erupted from his throat. “What are you saying? Why are you even saying that?” He managed to say between his laugh attacks while clutching his stomach.

“It’s true! I’m really a demon!” Kai defended heatedly, his eyebrows furrowing as he glared at the obviously amused guy in front of him. Kyungsoo slowly recovered and soon a serious expression took over his face.

“Give me proof then.” Kyungsoo demanded. He couldn’t believe the words from Kai and wanted proof if he actually told the truth. How could he other ways believe such an outrageous thing?

“Sure.” Kai simply said as he stood up.

Kyungsoo looked at him not knowing what to expect. It all seemed so strange, but Kyungsoo had already realized that Kai wasn’t like just anyone. He was definitely one of a kind…

Kai took a deep breath before smirking. A second later he was gone. Leaving a white mist after him. And a shocked Kyungsoo…

“W-what?” Kyungsoo stuttered completely dumbfounded at the disappearance of the guy he had just been talking to a minute ago. He scanned the whole room for any traces of Kai but couldn’t see anything but the same old restaurant that he’s been working at for years already.

With another white mist, Kai appeared right behind of the bewildered chef, patting his shoulder to make him known. Kyungsoo quickly turned around and lost his balance, making him fall backwards. Kai swiftly grabbed a hold of Kyungsoo’s waist and pulled him closer by automatic. The close proximity made the two guys blush madly, their heart beats drumming harder and quicker than normal as they stared deeply into each other’s eyes.

Kyungsoo pulled away almost immediately, his hands found their way to cup his own cheeks out of embarrassment. Kai could only stand there with his lips slightly parted as he gazed at the other. So close…

“H-how d-did you d-do that?” Kyungsoo managed to somehow stutter, change the subject a bit, still not believing what had just happened before their little ‘situation’. “Well, that’s not enough anyway… Just because you can disappear into thin air doesn’t mean you’re a demon.” He finished while tilting his chin upwards a bit, almost like he was challenging Kai.

“Okay… what about this then?” Kai questioned before concentrating his hardest to show Kyungsoo something that would definitely make him believe his words.

It was a bit painful for Kai when his horns started growing out of his forehead and his tail slowly making its appearance, breaking through the fabric of his pants to fit. He arched his back as feathered wings grew out from it, an excruciating pain taking over his whole body which made him slightly nauseous.

Kyungsoo gaped at the sight, completely taken aback with amazement. He had never ever seen anything like it before, even though he loved watching fantasy movies and reading novels about angels and demons and such. But actually seeing it up close was making him speechless. Kai had actually told him the truth.

As Kai’s transformation was complete he glanced up at Kyungsoo with his red demon eyes, surprising Kyungsoo even more for changing eye color too. He smirked at the result of his change before slowly walking closer.

“Are you happy now? Do you believe me now that you can see it yourself?” Kai snickered amusedly, stopping just inches away from the guy.

Kyungsoo only nodded, completely at a loss of words. Something absolutely unbelievable had just happened right in front of him and he didn’t know what to do. All he could do was to admire the dark haired, red eyed demon with majestic black wings and well-built body. If that’s how all demons look, then I don’t know what to say… Kyungsoo thought as he swallowed hard. Completely mesmerized by Kai’s transformation. He did like him before, but now it was like a whole new person, well demon, standing there and looking at him with an intense glare. The iness oozing out if the body…

“Can I touch your wings?” Were the words coming out of his mouth, because Kyungsoo felt extremely curious about how they would feel against the skin.

“Eh? Ah… sure… I guess?” Kai unsurely answered as he spread his wings a bit for better access for Kyungsoo.

It didn’t take long before the slightly shorter male reached out his hands towards the feathers, carefully caressing the wings like they were made of glass. The sensation of the soft and smooth surface underneath his nimble fingers was making him even more awestruck. It was not exactly like the feather’s of a bird, it was softer and silkier and definitely more beautiful in some way. He couldn’t really explain it even if he tried, not that he could ever tell anyone about this encounter though. Because who would believe him?

“Are you done yet?” Kai let out almost desperately, startling Kyungsoo a bit.

The touches from the human had made Kai shiver out of pleasure, embarrassedly enough. And then to double the effect, Kyungsoo had unconsciously closed the distance between them, by pressing his body against Kai’s. Making it difficult for Kai to breathe normally. When Kyungsoo noticed the small dilemma, he remained silent. He didn’t really want to let go of the wings that he had finally been able to touch after dreaming about it for so long. But he knew that the closeness between them was making them both somewhat uncomfortable, even though he secretly liked it. But he knew he had to let go sooner or later.

Kyungsoo looked straightly into Kai’s eyes once again and Kai couldn’t help but swallow nervously. They were so close, yet so far. Too far for his wishes…

Kai’s eyes flashed with a bright red as his demon side took over his mind, his body moving like it was a puppet controlled by strings. It all went fast, too fast for them both to actually react. Kai had bent down and pressed his lips against Kyungsoo’s. The kiss had taken the latter by total surprise, making Kyungsoo’s mind completely blank and left him unable to move an inch. When Kai finally pulled back, Kyungsoo’s limbs went numb and he fell to his knees. His first kiss had been taken just like that, making him weak and at the same time confused. Does Kai like me too?

“Are you okay?! I’m so sorry! I didn’t know what I was doing!” Kai let out all flustered, blushing madly while helping Kyungsoo up on his feet again. “I can’t really control my demon side… Not as much as I want at least…”

“I-it’s… a-alright!” Kyungsoo answered with a forced smile. “Totally fine!” He finished with a cracked voice.

“Are you sure?” Kai sincerely asked, feeling stupid for not controlling himself better. They had in fact just met; they didn’t even know anything about each other. Well, not much anyway. He didn’t want to scare the human away by acting too straightforward.

“Yeah… Let’s get back to my place… it’s late…. and it’s getting dark…” Kyungsoo mumbled and then his eyes widened. “Don’t get any wrong ideas! I didn’t mean it in a strange way!”

Kai chuckled. It was so cute how embarrassed someone could be and it made Kai get the urge to squeeze the poor guy in a tight hug. But he refrained from doing so and instead he just nodded understandingly. As Kyungsoo sighed slightly relieved and started to get rid of the dishes to finally leave the restaurant, Kai observed his every move. All Kai could think about was what he had to do to make the human his. Falling in love wasn’t anything he had planned while going there, but he didn’t really dislike it. On the contrary, he felt more than just happy for meeting Kyungsoo.

It was like he got a new purpose in life, a chance to get closer to his dreams. A chance to show his good sides. This was where he wanted to stay. In the human world, right next to Kyungsoo…

Hopefully Kyungsoo would accept him for all that he was, he hadn’t freaked out when seeing Kai’s demon form after all.

Now there was just a tiny little problem to solve. The mission he had gotten before arriving in the human world. And Arazotael, the demon lord…

After much thought, Kai concluded that since his father had been stupid enough to forget giving him any details of his mission on earth he could forget it as well. His father had just told him not to return if he didn’t succeed with it anyway. What he hadn’t thought about was the fact that Kai didn’t want to return to the place he had called ‘home’. He didn’t want the pressure of being the demon lord’s son. So this was the perfect opportunity to let go of the bonds that kept him linked to the world he hated so much. He had always wanted to be an angel, and this was the closest he could be to that, Kai reasoned.

At least Kyungsoo looked like an angel…

And Kai planned to make Kyungsoo his own angel, only his…
