Chapter 1

Aegyo

Park Chaehwan slammed the front door as she arrived home. Her appa looked up from his newspaper as he sat in the living room as her umma quickly came out from the kitchen. Chaehwan stomped her way up the stairs to her bedroom and slamming her bedroom door closed. Mrs. Park looked towards the stairs and looked at her husband. Mr. Park shrugged his shoulders in response.

Just as they were about to talk, the front door opened, revealing Xiumin, Chaehwan’s boyfriend. That was when everything clicked. He bowed to Chaehwan’s parents. “Annyeonghaseyo omonim and abunim.”

Mr. Park shook his head as he continued to read the newspaper, “Here we go again.”

Xiumin nervously looked at Chaehwan’s umma, which she only smiled at him, “She’s upstairs. Go on up Xiumin.” She nodded her head towards the stairway.

He bowed again, “Kamsamida omonim.” Then he ran up the stairs to talk to Chaehwan.

Mrs. Park just giggled as Mr. Park scoffed, “That’s the third time she came home upset. That was why I never liked her having a boyfriend when she was in high school.”

“Yeobo. She’s in college now. She’s free to do whatever she wants. And that includes having a boyfriend.” She told her husband.

He rolled his eyes and looked back at his paper, “Whatever.” His wife laughed again and went back into the kitchen to fix up a snack for the two quarreling love birds upstairs.

Meanwhile, upstairs where Xiumin stood in front of Chaehwan’s bedroom door knocking continuously. “Chaehwan ah. Babe. Please open the door. I want to apologize.”

“Apologize for what?” Chaehwan questioned, testing him if he knew why the real reason why she’s upset.”

“…for being a cheap date?” he guessed. Chaehwan let out a frustrated scream. Xiumin continued to knock on her door. “Please open the door!”

“SHIRO!” Chaehwan yelled from the other side of the door, sitting crossed legged on her bed facing away from the door while hugging a pillow while heaving deeply from anger.

Xiumin sighed, ‘How can I get in there?’ he thought.

“She still didn’t let you in Xiumin ah?” a voice said. He looked behind him to see Chaehwan’s umma holding a tray of fruits and two glasses of freshly squeezed orange juice. He shook his head. Mrs. Park chuckled and handed Xiumin the tray. She went to a drawer and took out a ring of keys. She walked over to Chaehwan’s door and unlocked it Xiumin. She opened the door and waved her hand, “Go on in Xiumin.”

He gave her a smile, “Kamsamida omonim.” All she did was smile back and walked back downstairs.

As Xiumin went in, he saw Chaehwan on the bed with the blanket over her whole body. When her umma was unlocking the door, she started to freak out and had no other choice but to hide under the blanket. Lame hiding spot, don’t you think? Xiumin set the tray onto Chaehwan’s desk and walked over to Chaehwan.

“Chaehwan ah…” he poked her.

“I’m sorry. Chaehwan isn’t here right now. But if it’s her lame-o boyfriend Xiumin, CHAEHWAN DOESN’T WANT TO TALK TO HIM AT ALL!!! SO LEAVE!!!” Chaehwan clutched the blanket and secured herself.

He sighed and sat next to her on the bed, “Look, Chaehwan ah. I’m-“ Before he knew it, he was kicked off the bed, landing on his . THUD!

Chaehwan’s parents both looked upwards towards the ceiling, wondering what was going on upstairs. “They better not be having up there.” Mr. Park gritted his teeth as he began to stand up.

Mrs. Park grabbed onto her husband and pulled him back down, “They’re not having . Why would they do that while we’re home?” she questioned as she sipped her juice and held out a tiny fork with a slice of pear to him.

“Are you saying that they had before?” he raised an eyebrow. All she did was shrug her shoulders and smiled as she bit onto a sliced piece of apple from her own fork. Mr. Park grumpily mumbled to himself and chewed harshly into the pear piece.

Xiumin quickly stood up and rubbed his bottom, “Why’d you do that?!”

Chaehwan finally came out of her blanket cocoon and glared at him, “Because you deserve it for forgetting what today is!”

He put his hands on his hips, “What are you talking about?!”

She shot out from her bed and glared daggers at him, “You know what?! FORGET IT!!!” She opened her door and screamed, “APPA!!! THROW XIUMIN OPPA OUT OF THE HOUSE FOR ME!!!”

His eyes almost popped out of his eye sockets, “W-What are you-“

Before he knew it, her appa was there. His arms were crossed against his chest once he arrived. He walked over to Xiumin and grabbed him by the back of his shirt, “Let’s go mister.”

“H-Hey!” he yelled as Mr. Park started pulling him out of Chaehwan’s door. “Chaehwan ah!!!” She waved to him as the two men left her room. Then she slammed the door, lightly shaking the whole house. Xiumin sighed as Mr. Park continued to pull him down the stairs. Loud music started playing inside of Chaehwan’s room.

Mrs. Park looked at Xiumin with worry once the two men reached downstairs. Mr. Park harshly pushed Xiumin from himself away and went back to the living room. “Gwenchana Xiumin ah?” Mrs. Park asked.

“Mollayo, but I’m really confused right now. She’s telling me that I forgot about today.” Xiumin said as he scratched his head while at the same time, trying to collect any clues to what that day was.

“Isn’t today your six month anniversary?” Mrs. Park questioned.

He stared at her with big eyes, “M-Moh?”

“She was excited this morning that she couldn’t help but tell me that you had something planned out for your anniversary.” She said, only resulting in Xiumin to remain quiet and in shock. How could he forget?

“Oh my goodness!” Mr. Park yelled in exasperation as he stood up and walked over towards his wife and Xiumin. “How can you forget an anniversary?! That’s like common sense for men to know that women take anniversaries seriously!”

Mrs. Park crossed her arms, “Are you saying that from experience? Because I don’t remember you remembering any of our anniversaries yeobo.” She questioned as she raised an eyebrow.

Mr. Park gave out a nervous cough as he looked away from his wife, “W-Well… I’ll try to remember not to forget from now on.”

“Try to remember?”

“I WILL REMEMBER, OKAY?! GIVE ME SOME SPACE WOMAN!”

Mrs. Park and Xiumin couldn’t help but laugh, but Xiumin quickly stopped after getting a glare from Chaehwan’s appa. “Er… So what am I supposed to do now?” he asked.

Mr. Park slung his arm around Xiumin, “From my experience of dating, when you made a mistake, you have to apologize. That’s always first.”

Xiumin threw up his arms in defeat, “I tried that! But It didn’t work!” He walked into the living room and plopped down onto the couch.

“Try buying her an expensive gift.” Mr. Park suggested as he also walked back into the living room and sat at his chair as it faced Xiumin.

“Mianhaeyo abunim but I’m already broke as it is. I’m a cheap date when it comes to Chaehwan as I work 2 part time jobs to help out my parents in a way to pay bills..” Xiumin explained.

Mrs. Park lightly slapped her husband on to back of the head, “How could you ask him to buy Chaehwan something expensive? He’s still young to have that much money.” She said as she arrived in the living room after setting down Xiumin his drink in front of him, which Xiumin took a couple of gulps of.

Mr. Park glared at his wife, “Well, since you’re a woman, what does he have to do to make Chaehwan forgive him?”

She thought about it and smiled. She walked over to Xiumin, sat next to him, and whispered into his ear the solution. His eyes widened, “Cheolmalyo? I just have to do that?”

“What do you have to do?” Mr. Park asked, feeling confused and left out on the solution.

She just smiled back as a response to Xiumin, “If it worked with me, I bet it will work on my own daughter. She is my own flesh and blood anyway.”

“She’s my own flesh and blood too!” Mr. Park said even though he didn’t know what his wife was talking about.

Xiumin quickly hugged Chaehwan’s umma, “Kamsamida omonim. I will try and do that then.” He stood up, bowed to Chaehwan’s parents, and exited the house.

Chaehwan’s umma smiled in satisfaction and began to clean up the living room, piling the dishes from the coffee table onto the tray to bring into the kitchen to clean. Mr. Park stared at his wife, “What did you tell the boy?”

She continued to clean up but answered, “Why are you asking? You did it to me and that’s how I fell for you in the past.”

Mrs. Park walked past him and went into the kitchen to start on the dishes, leaving Mr. Park to think back. “What did I do in the past for her to fall for me? Ughhh!!! How come I can’t remember?! Am I that old?!”

“Yes, you are old yeobo.” Mrs. Park said from the kitchen.

“QUIET YOU!” he yelled back, only gaining a giggle from his wife. ‘SERIOUSLY!!! WHAT DID I DO?!’ he thought to himself.
